The monsoon is causing havoc in Mumbai. Dozens of people have been killed in the last 24 hours in wall collapse and landslides, triggered by overnight incessant rains in the city. As per reports, several houses collapsed due to the incessant overnight rainfall.
More than 20 people were killed and several others sustained injuries after getting trapped under the rubble of their homes in Mumbai's Chembur and Vikhroli between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Several such incidents of house wall collapse, landslide, short circuit have been reported during the period.
Apart from this, there are reports of uprooting of trees in as many as nine different places. As per reports, heavy rainfall lashed parts of Mumbai last night between 12am to 2am. Several places in Mumbai, including Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Andheri, Chembur, Kurla, Gandhi Market, Hindmata, also witnessed water-logging.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences after the loss of lives in wall collapse incidents in Mumbai. PM Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund for each of the families of deceased while Rs 50,000 would be given to those injured.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has also announced an aid of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased. Continuous downpour caused severe water-logging, disruption of local train services and vehicular traffic in financial capital on Sunday. The situation still continues to remain grim.
