Every year during Janmanshtami festival, people choose to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna with much pomp and show. But with Covid restrictions in place this year, devotees in many places would be deprived of partaking in traditional activities such as 'Dahi Handi' ceremony and 'kirtans'.

Nonetheless, there are other ways in which people observe this festival, even staying within the confines of their homes. Many people observe hours-long fasting and then break the same with mouth-watering delicacies. Those planning to fast can keep some essentials ready at home or else prepare non-grain, salt-free and gluten-free diet during the festivity.

During the fast, devotees can fuel their bodies with watery fruits such as blackberry, watermelon, grapes and even seasonal ones like banana, apple and guava. These fruits not just help in increasing the metabolism but also keep one full throughout the day. One can also try Curd Lassi.

This is said to be a favourite of Lord Krishna and a chosen food item during fast, which helps in preventing thirst and also boosts energy. ‘Sabudana’ in the form of ‘Khichdi’ or ‘Kheer’ and ‘Kuttu Ka Aata’ as ‘Parantha’ are also popular yet healthy choices for people fasting on the occasion.

When it comes to breaking the fast, people can indulge in sweets like Makhan Mishri, which is said to be a favourite of the Lord as well. If one craves for options, then Dhaniya Panjiri, Charnamrit and Panjiri Laddoos make excellent choices for someone breaking their fast during Janmashtami.
