India’s highest sporting award, the 'Khel Ratna' renamed as 'Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement on Friday. Prime Minister Modi took to twitter to make the announcement of renaming the Khel Ratna Award, which was known as 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.' Citing that he has been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand, the PM announced that the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. PM Modi said that Major Dhyan Chand was among India's foremost sportspersons who brought honour and pride for India. It is fitting that our nation's highest sporting honour will be named after him. The decision was welcomed by Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. The minister said that Major Dhyan Chand is India's most legendary and loved sporting icons and it is only befitting that India's Highest Sporting Honour be named after him. Major Dhyan Chand scrored over 400 goals in his career while representing India from 1926 to 1949.
