The Covid-19 pandemic is far from over, yet scores of farmers head from Punjab, Haryana to join the ongoing protest at the Tikri (Delhi-Haryana) border. Since December 2020, the farmers have been protesting at the Delhi borders, demanding a repeal of the Centre’s three agricultural laws. In spite of the state-wide COVID lockdown, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of over 40 farm organisations, has decided to hold protests on 26th May and observe the day as 'black day'. Marking six months of the farmers' protest at Delhi borders, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha has given a call to observe countrywide protests on May 26 (Wednesday). Not only this. Twelve major opposition parties, led by the Congress, have extended support to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha's protest call. A joint statement in this regard was issued by the Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand, former Jammu and Kashmir CM Farooq Abdullah, former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, CPI leader D Raja and senior CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury. Earlier on May 12, the leaders of Opposition parties including Sonia Gandhi and four sitting chief ministers and other senior leaders, had written to Prime Narendra Minister Modi, demanding the immediate repeal of the farm laws. It is pertinent to note that the central government has held several rounds of formal talks with the farmers' union, however, the farmer leaders have stuck to their demand for complete repeal of the three farm laws.
