This happened at the time when the whole country is hit hard by the second wave of COVID-19 and doctors continue to lay their lives on the line. A junior doctor at a Covid care centre in Assam was brutally assaulted by the relatives of a Covid-19 patient who died during treatment.

The incident took place at Udali Model Hospital in Assam's Hojai on Tuesday (June 1), where the junior doctor identified as Seuj Kumar Senapati was on duty. The entire incident was captured on a camera and the video clip has gone viral on social media. In the video clip, the doctor can be seen being brutally punched, kicked, and beaten with metal trash cans and bricks by several relatives of the deceased patient.

The doctor was severely injured, but his condition is said to be stable now. Taking to Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the incident and said such barbaric attacks on frontline workers will not be tolerated. The Assam Police has arrested 24 people in connection with the attack, informed the Chief Minister. Following the barbaric incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) wrote a letter to the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, seeking strong action against healthcare violence and demanded immediate action against the culprits.
