On this day (May 3) in 1913, India ventured into the cinematic universe with Dadasaheb Phalke’s first feature film titled ‘Raja Harishchandra’. This silent film featuring Dattatraya Damodar Dabke, Anna Salunke, Bhalchandra Phalke and Gajanan Vasudev Sane, is based on the legend of Raja Harishchandra which was portrayed by Dabke. Dadasaheb Phalke took the responsibility of scriptment, direction, production design, make-up, film editing, and film processing. The film was first released to a select audience for reviewing, as criticism towards the new venture was already spreading. The film had its theatrical release on 3rd May 1913. Raja Harishchandra was praised by the audience in Bombay and soon the news reached far wide, and throughout India the requests to screen the film came flooding. The film has left behind a legacy for countless film stars, directors and enthusiasts by being the starting point of it all. Today marks the 111th year since its making.The premiere took place on April 21, 1913 in Bombay with several prominent dignatatries and personalities from Bombay. The dilm was praised by The Times of India as "simply marvellous" and "[I]t is really a pleasure to see this piece of Indian workmanship".
