Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasad highlighted that the number of startups in India has increased to more than 1.4 lakh. This figure is as on June 30, 2024.    

According to a written response by the minister in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, the State/Union Territory-wise list has shown that Maharashtra tops the list with 25,044 registered startups, recognised under the Start-up initiative under Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).  

Karnataka is second with 15,019 registered startups, followed by Delhi with 14,734 startups. Uttar Pradesh has secured the fourth place with 13,299 startups, while Gujarat takes 5th position with 11,436 startups. The data released by the Ministry suggests that Odisha has 2484 registered startups, which puts it in the 14th place.  

The government launched the Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016, to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation, startups, and encouraging investments in the startup ecosystem of the nation.  

 
In the 'Startup India: The Way Ahead' scheme, plans include promoting ease of business for startups, increasing technology use, building stakeholder capacities, and enabling a digital Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The government established a Rs 10,000 crore Fund for Startups.    
The minister highlighted that the government has supported startups at various stages, facilitated domestic capital raising, reduced reliance on foreign capital, and promoted new venture capital funds.
