Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, faced a significant outage on Monday, disrupting access for users across multiple regions. Hundreds reported being unable to log in, refresh feeds, or post updates, triggering a surge in complaints on outage-tracking platforms such as Downdetector.
The disruption appeared to be most severe in the United States and parts of India, where users flagged repeated glitches. According to Downdetector data, more than 23,210 outage reports were recorded in the US alone as of 8:24 am ET (1324 GMT). The tracker compiles user-submitted status reports to identify service interruptions in real time.
Widespread Access Problems
Users reported encountering frozen timelines, failed logins and difficulty posting content. For a platform that serves as a real-time hub for breaking news, public discourse and trending events, the disruption sparked immediate reaction online, with many turning to alternative platforms to confirm the outage.
Possible Reasons Behind the Disruption
While X has not officially detailed the cause, several factors could explain the service breakdown. One possibility is server-related technical issues, including overload or backend fixes that temporarily impact performance.
Another factor could be a sudden spike in traffic. Around 7 pm IST, discussions around the AI Impact Summit 2026 inauguration were trending, potentially driving heavy simultaneous usage that strained servers.
Routine maintenance is also a plausible explanation, as platforms occasionally undergo updates or bug fixes that may temporarily limit access.
Although services appeared to gradually stabilise, the outage once again underscored how dependent millions remain on X for instant information and digital engagement.
