A doctor on Cyclone Dana duty at Babar Primary Health Centre under Mahakalapada block in Kendrapara district has been hospitalised after a snake bit him.

According to sources, the mishap occurred when the doctor went outside to attend nature's call as the PHC reportedly had no toilet facility.

In the meantime, he was reportedly bitten by a venomous snake. He was immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) and then shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and is undergoing treatment at the ICU of the medicine ward at the hospital, sources informed.

“The doctor woke up with a bite mark on his hand. He first suspected it to be an insect bite and performed OPD duties. After his hand swelled, he was immediately rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital. After the administration of anti-venom, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack,” said Sachidananda Mishra, Kendrapara Chief District Medical Officer.

Asked if the snake bit him when he was outside to attend nature’s call, Mishra said, “The snake bit him while he was asleep. Though he is still in the ICU, his condition is stable now.”
