Reports said Pratima Sa of Patara Sahi in Anandpur town had given birth to a boy at the hospital yesterday. This morning, the baby died minutes after being administered an antibiotic injection by a nurse.
Tension flared up in the hospital after the family members alleged that the baby died due to a wrong injection given by the nurse.
Following information, police rushed to the hospital to take charge of the situation.
“The health of my son was all right yesterday. But after the nurse gave the injection to my boy in the morning, his body became cold. Seeing his condition, I called the doctor who arrived after some time. After examining my son, the doctor said he is dead,” said the sobbing mother.
Asked about the incident, Dr Krushna Chandra Das, pediatric specialist inf the hospital, said the injection the nurse gave to the new boy today was the same injection which had been given to him yesterday.
Das, however, said he would probe the incident following the complaints of the family members of the deceased.
As per reports, Seema Nayak, the minor girl from Garada village was brought to the nursing home owned by a doctor after she complained of illness this morning.
Seema’s family members alleged that after examining her, Dr. Radhanath Panda instructed the compounder to administer an injection following which condition of the girl deteriorated. Though the family rushed Seema to Niali hospital, she was declared brought dead by the doctors, sources said.
Accusing the doctor at the nursing home of providing faulty treatment, the girl's family members ransacked property at the nursing home.
Meanwhile, police have detained the doctor and the compounder of the nursing home while further investigation into the incident is underway. Adequate police forces have also been deployed near the nursing home to avoid any untoward incident.
As per reports, Khatua was rushed to the DHH at around 10 AM today after he complained of respiratory problems. Later, the attending doctor reportedly told Khatua's relatives to get an ECG done immediately but the concerned staff allegedly delayed the test.
Khatua breathed his last at around 1 pm following which his family members staged protest at the hospital alleging medical negligence. Later, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
"After my brother complained of chest pain, I admitted him to the hospital. The doctor then told me to immediately do an ECG report but the person in-charge of the department told me to do it at 2 pm. When I brought the matter to the notice of the CDMO, he rang up to the ADMO but by then, he had already died," alleged Rajat Ranjan Khatua, brother of the deceased.
Meanwhile, CDMO Artabandhu Nayak said that an investigation will be done as per the allegation and stern action will be taken against those found guilty.
As per reports, the family members initially rushed the child to City hospital and Sishu Bhawan after he reportedly fell down from the stairs of their house at CDA area in Cuttack at around 2:30 pm yesterday. Later, they rushed him to SCB after failing to seek necessary medical assistance at Sishu bhawan.
“As per the advice of doctors at SCB, we had conducted CT scan and other tests. The doctors however asked us to take the boy home after seeing the medical reports. But again we had to rush him to SCB late last night after he started vomiting,” said Mantu Das, a relative.
Das alleged that without treating the child, the doctors asked us to take the boy home, which has led to his death.
Protesting such negligence, the family members and other attendants staged a demonstration by placing the body of the child and later locked the doctors’ chamber inside the casualty wing of the premier State-run hospital.
Following the incident, senior officials of Mangalabag police and SCB outpost reached the spot to pacify the agitators.
The authorities of SCB Medical College and Hospital, however, could not be contacted over the allegations. More details awaited.
Saroj Kumar Rout of Kanapura village under Kamakhyanagar police limits was admitted to the hospital at around 2 pm after he complained of illness and breathing problem on Friday. However, he died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The family members of Rout alleged that the oxygen mask he was wearing was connected to empty oxygen cylinder which led to his death. Demanding compensation, they created ruckus at the hospital.
Deceased Rout's uncle, Minay Verma said, "He was suffering from severe breathing difficulties. After initial examination, the doctor administered him injection and kept him on oxygen support. However, we found that the oxygen cylinder was empty and contacted the hospital staff. Later, they issued another oxygen cylinder but that was also not working."
Kamakhyanagar police rushed to the spot after getting information and launched an investigation in connection with the incident.
On being asked, Kamakhyanagar Sub-Divisional Medical Officer, Ratnakar Samal assured an enquiry into the matter. "Rout was critically ill and the doctors here had referred him to SCB Medical in Cuttack. However, he was admitted at the hospital later as his health condition was deteriorating fast. After complaint by his family members, our staff checked the oxygen cylinder and realised it was working slowly following which it was replaced with a new one,' said Samal adding that the matter will be enquired and if anyone is found guilty, appropriate action will be taken against the defaulter.
