The ill-fated auto-rickshaw carrying nine passengers was heading toward Nuagada. As the driver was negotiating a turn at Keradanga Ghat, he lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the mishap.
The deceased have been identified as Jagdish Oram and Umakant Patel. While Oram used to work as a shift-in-charge, Patel was a machine operator in the mines.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of the pickup van might have rammed the vehicle into the truck due to fog or rash driving.
Even though the exact reason behind the tragic mishap was not known immediately, it is suspected that the vehicle plunged into the canal after the driver lost balance over the wheels.
The injured persons were immediately rescued and rushed to Rourkela government hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Subrat Bhoi, Rajesh Pera and Raja Pera. They were studying in class 6 of Sardhapali Government Primary School.
In another incident, six jawans of the ITBP sustained injuries in a road accident near Bolgad on Khordha-Bolangir NH-57. Sources said the accident occurred when the ITBP van, carrying the jawans, overturned after the driver lost control of the steering wheel.
The impact of the collision was so intense that three died on the spot. The child was rescued in critical condition and was admitted to a local government hospital.
The injured girl, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was rescued and immediately rushed to a private hospital.
After the mishap, the pick-up van driver fled from the spot leaving behind his van at the accident site.
Baisinga police seized the tractor and detained the driver. His questioning is currently underway.
