The Keonjhar road accident that occurred on Friday, the first day of the zero fatality week, seems to have acted as a wake-up call for the authorities concerned.
As many as 17 people lost their lives in separate road accidents on Friday when the state was observing the first day of the zero fatality week.
An engineering student was crushed under truck wheels in Bhubaneswar this morning.
Buoyed up by the encouraging results of the zero fatality week observed in April this year, the State Commerce and Transport Department has taken the decision to observe the week again in December.
All the injured persons are undergoing treatment at Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).
In a tragic road mishap, three persons were killed after the bike they were on had a head-on collision with a car at Subalaya Square under Dasapalla Police limits of Nayagarh district on Saturday.
All three were rushed to the local hospital where two were declared brought dead. The condition of the injured person is stated to be critical during the filing of this report.
After a long gap, the Commissionerate Police has once again launched a drive against violations including driving or riding on the wrong side, re-modeling vehicle exhausts to create noise more than the permissible limits, etc.
As per initial reports, all the deceased were traveling in a bus that was en route to Bhubaneswar from Sundargarh district. The passengers had reportedly got down from the bus after it developed a flat tyre.
At least 40 passengers were inside the bus when it plunged into the Chenab River gorge, sources said.
From the AADHAR cards found at the accident spot, it was learned that they were residents of the Sana Biruahan Hata Sahi area.
It is pertinent to mention here that a controversy has erupted over the road accident. The Commissionerate Police also came under questioning from various quarters after it issued a press release about the accident mentioning a different registration number of the vehicle.
As per the report, a total of 5,467 people died in road accidents in Odisha in 2022, registering an increase of 7.6 percent as compared to 2021.
During 2022, fatal accidents that took place on National Highways increased to 55,571 as compared to 50,953 fatal accidents in 2021, registering an increase of 9.1 percent.
According to police, two others were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at a hospital where their condition is stated to be critical.
