According to reports, Buddhadeb is suspected to have cut his hands and other parts with the help of a blade or any other sharp object at around 2 am. After the jail authorities spotted him lying in a pool of blood, he was first shifted to Nimapara and later to Puri hospital.
However, as Buddhadeb’s condition deteriorated due to excess bleeding, he was then shifted to SCB in Cuttack.
Earlier, police on August 16 had arrested Buddhadeb Behera, a 31-year-old labour contractor, for allegedly raping and murdering a woman in a forest at Delanga of Puri district on August 2.
The deceased woman, who was raped and killed by Buddhadeb, was identified as Anita Nayak (27) of Kajuri village under Raikia police limits in Kandhamal district.
Behera, a native of Deogarh, was working in Andhra Pradesh and was earlier involved in similar crimes in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

In 2012, Buddhadeb was arrested in a case of rape and murder and was lodged in jail. But in the same year, he complained of leg pain and was taken to a hospital in Deogarh from where he escaped.

Even though the cops are still clueless about the psycho killer, special teams have been formed to nab the accused while checking has been intensified.
Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty today informed that as a sharp weapon was used to execute three murders and all the victims were sleeping on footpath, we suspect that the criminal could be psychopath.
“As the pattern of murder is same and crime has been executed without any motive, we suspected the involvement of one person. We have formed a special core investigation team and we will nab the culprit soon,” said Mohanty said.
The top cop further rubbished certain reports in media that the killer has headed to Bhubaneswar. “There is no reason to panic as all such are rumours,” he added.
Senior police officials informed that already special efforts have been taken to intensify patrolling in Cuttack. Not only Cuttack, similar drives have also been undertaken in Bhubaneswar while the entire operation is being monitored by the Police Commissioner.
Apart from Commissionerate Police, Government Railway Police (GRP) has also undertaken special measures for the protection of homeless under its jurisdiction.
The MLAs, BJD's Souvic Biswal and Congress' Mohammad Moquim joined the night patrolling and raised awareness among the homeless and others sleeping on footpath in various parts of the Cuttack.
"The rest room at Badambadi bus terminal is locked while the night shelter is yet to be made functional even though the renovation works have been completed. As a result, passengers and other homeless are forced to take shelter on footpaths," said Moquim.
As some miscreants have forcefully captured the night shelters and collecting money, a delegation of Congress will meet the DGP for appropriate action against the accused. The patrolling should be started in the evening and the CCTVs should be installed at various parts of the city," Moquim added.
Choudwar-Cuttack MLA, Souvic Biswal said, "The person who is behind the brutal murder of three persons seems to be abnormal. The police department is on high alert and efforts are being taken to nab the accused. We will shift the homeless and those who are sleeping on footpath to shelter homes."
On the other hand, Cuttack DCP Ahikleswar Singh informed that special teams have been formed and patrolling intensified in the city.
"We have got some leads in the case. The third victim, whose body was recovered near Cardiology department of SCB Hospital, was actually attacked near OMP Chhak. But the victim had requested a biker to drop him at the hospital. Investigation is underway and will and the accused soon," said Singh.
On July 24, a daily wage labourer was found dead under OMP bridge with injury marks on his neck and head. In another incident, an elderly rag picker was found in critical condition near the Cardiology department of SCB Hospital. The man, however, later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.
Similarly, a man was brutally murdered near Taladanda canal on July 23.
Twin City Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty today informed that after six days of marathon investigation, the police have found that all the three murders were committed by a deranged person who had been undergoing treatment at the psychiatric department of the SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Even though the police have not clarified the identity of the accused apprehending that it would create hindrances in the probe, police sources said that detailed address of the murderer has been identified.
“We have left no stone unturned to find details of the murder during the probe and I hope that we will nab the accused soon,” said Twin City Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty.
Surprisingly, police investigation has revealed some interesting facts behind the murder. According to the police, the murderer has a penchant for women’s garments.
It may be noted that a youth was found dead with deep injury marks near Ranihat Bridge on Tuesday morning. Later, two bodies, one from near SCB Medical College and another from neighbouring OMP market, were recovered on Wednesday morning. Interestingly, the throats of all the three bodies were slit and their heads were found to be smashed with a heavy object.
Following the incidents, police geared up to solve the crimes on a war footing. After preliminary investigation, cops found that in all the three cases, the accused had fled the spot immediately after committing the crime.
Based on the forensic report and collection of evidence from the spot and its adjoining areas, police suspected that a psychopath was behind the murders.
To ascertain the truth behind it, police found that as many as 11 different patients were undergoing treatment on the name of the accused at the Psychiatric department of SCB. After interrogation of the hospital staff, police have finally narrowed their suspicion on the accused.
As per reports, the woman was standing in front of her house when a masked man attacked her with a knife. However, the attacker, believed to be the same 'psycho killer' behind 3 recent murders, fled the spot injuring the woman before locals gathered hearing the screams.
The woman was then rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment and her condition is reportedly stable now. However, panicked locals patrolled the streets carrying sticks to guard the area and apprehend the attacker.
"The man was standing in front of my house and had covered his face. When I asked his identity, he attacked and fled," said Sandhya Tarei, the injured woman.

"Sahu had been staying near the Cuttack Railway Station for the past three months. No one was aware about his whereabouts since July 24 (after the second murder). We were searching for him and managed to nab him today morning," informed Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh.
On being asked whether he is the 'psycho killer,' Singh said, "Prima facie, it doesn't seem like he has any mental illness. Our interrogation is on and we will know more details about him soon."
Commenting on the attack on a woman by a masked man in Jobra area yesterday night, which was believed to have been carried out by the 'psycho killer' behind the 3 murders, the DCP said that "it is a chain snatching incident and not related to the murders."
Reportedly, police took Sahu near OMP Chhak where he demonstrated how he executed the crime. Police also recovered the hidden murder weapon based on the information given by Sahu during interrogation which was continuing since June 29 after his detention.
On the other hand, Sahu’s wife Gitanjali has refuted the allegations leveled against her husband and said that he is being falsely implicated in the murder cases. She also met Nayagarh SP yesterday and filed a complaint at Nayagarh Police Station in this regard.

Citing circumstantial evidences & sequence of the murders, Police had established that a serial killer was behind the killings.
In a significant development today, Commissionerate Police arrested Narayan Sahu, the suspected serial killer behind the brutal murders in Cuttack after he was found guilty in two out of the three cases. He has been court forwarded.
Briefing mediapersons, Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh said the suspect has accepted that he committed the two murders in OMP area of the city, however, he did not clarify about his involvement in the third murder at Ranihat bridge.
“The third case at Mangalabag Ranihat area is yet to be established. So we will bring the accused in remand and continue further investigation with DNA, polygraph and other tests to ascertain whether he is involved in the case,” said Singh.
Prior to his arrest today, a police team took Sahu to OMP chhak where he demonstrated how he executed the crime while officials of forensic department seized an axe, believed to be the weapon used by him in the murder. This apart, some other clothes of the accused have also been seized.
The DCP said that even though the true reason behind the murders is yet to be established, the accused has claimed that he had grudge against the victims and held them responsible for ousting him from the area he lived.
Further, the medical examination of the accused is being carried out to see whether he has some mental afflictions. Since the post mortem reports of the deceased have already been submitted, the police have prepared some queries to expedite further interrogation into the cases, said the DCP.
Following Narayan's arrest today, his mother Satyabhama Sahu demanded justice and appealed before the police to release him.

His wife Gitanjali had also met Nayagarh SP demanding justice. Refuting the allegations leveled against her husband, Gitanjali along with several villagers of Odagaon Sunamuhi accused the police of falsely implicating charges against Narayan.
