Kandhamal/Bhubaneswar: A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party extended its support to Odisha shutdown call given by farmers’ outfit Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) on February 21, the State Congress also said that they will support the bandh for price, pension and prestige.

State BJP President Basant Panda said the saffron party will extend support to NNKS, which has been demanding pension and proper price to the agricultural produce. “The farmers have the right to express their opinion and protest in a democracy. The state government has time and again tried to throttle the voice of the farmers. We will protest the anti-farmer policies,” said Panda.

Similarly, OPCC chief Niranjan Patnaik today informed that the Congress party would support the bandh called by NNKS while claiming that empowerment of the farmers remains top priority of the Congress.

Meanwhile in Kandhamal, the Maoists put up posters near Budaguda chhak in Baliguda area supporting the bandh. A few other posters were found in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been held responsible for the Pulwama attack.

The Odisha government has urged NNKS to desist from going on Odisha bandh on 21st February.

State Finance Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera said, “The Opposition parties don’t have any other issue to raise. Odisha government is trying to fulfill the demands of the farmers & the bandh call given by NNKS will cause inconvenience for the students appearing matriculation exam.”

The NNKS has called for a statewide bandh on February 21 to protect the interest of farmers. The outfit has been demanding price, prestige and pension for the farmers in the state. They have been demanding a security allowance of Rs 5,000 per month for the farmers. They have also sought cooperation from truck and bus associations urging them to keep their vehicles off the road during the bandh.

Later in the day, Odisha government in a statement stated that it had appealed Naba Nirmak Krushak Sangathan yesterday to desist from the agitation in the interest of nearly 6 lakh students and their parents who are gearing up for the annual matriculation examination starting from February 22.

“If the sangathan still persists with their planned Bandh programme, the State government will be compelled to take all necessary measures to ensure smooth conduct of the examination. Action will be taken as per provisions of Law. It is hoped that the organisers will realise their action could cause inconvinence to public especially to the students’ community and withdraw their bandh call in larger public interest,” Odisha government said in a statement.

“The government is taking away the basic rights from the farmers and which is why we have called for a bandh on February 21. We have urged political parties, industry bodies, intellectuals and people from other walks of life to support the shutdown,” Kumar said.

Earlier on February 11, NNKS launched protests at several places across the state protesting government’s callous attitude towards their long-standing demands.

Bhubaneswar: Around three lakh farmers under the aegis of Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) will hit the streets of Bhubaneswar today to pressurise the government to fulfil their long-standing demands of price, pension and prestige.

With the Assembly Budget Session underway, NNKS national convenor Akshay Kumar had threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the government fails to announce provisions in the budget for the Odisha farmers.

Kumar has alleged that the government is trying to foil the mega rally and farmers’ convention in Bhubaneswar. He said several farmers who are on way to join the rally are being detained and stopped by police at various places. Kumar further stated that police have detained the NNKS State Convenor Seshadev Nanda.

“Government won’t be successful and we will organise the convention. Our demands of price, pension and prestige will be intensified”, said Kumar.

Meanwhile, hundreds of farmers who were forcibly stopped at Bhubaneswar Railway Station from joining the mega farmers’ convention staged a dharna and protested against the police action.

In Mayurbhanj too, farmers turned up in huge numbers to stage blockade near College Chhak on Udala-Baripada road after allegedly being detained & prevented by police to join the farmers’ convention.

Reportedly, the farming community has been demanding a security allowance of Rs 5000 per month for nearly 36 lakh farmers of the State with an annual budget allocation of Rs 21,600 crore.

Around 3 lakh farmers from 30 districts will congregate today to gherao the Odisha Assembly demanding allocation of necessary funds for the community in the upcoming budget.

“We have been demanding a security allowance of Rs 5000 per month for 36 lakh farmers. If the government doesn’t make any announcement on security allowance, again 36 lakh farmers will march towards Bhubaneswar to question the government,” Kumar had said earlier.

Kumar had also stated that the State government has tried to divert the issue and their demands by implementing KALIA scheme. Despite forming ministerial level committees twice to resolve the issue, the government has not been able to take any concrete decision to look into our demands. Shockingly, the State government has tried to divert the issue by implementing ‘KALIA’ scheme,” Kumar had said.

Bhubaneswar: While the State Assembly will meet from February 4 to pass the Interim Budget for 2019-20, the Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) has threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the government fails to announce provisions in the budget for the Odisha farmers. Similar to the protests carried out in October-November last year, yet again lakhs of farmers under the aegis of NNKS have decided to hit the streets of Bhubaneswar to pressurise the government to fulfil their long-standing demands of price, pension and prestige.

Reportedly, the farming community has been demanding a security allowance of Rs 5000 per month for nearly 36 lakh farmers of the State with an annual budget allocation of Rs 21,600 crore.

Soon after a preparational meeting at Baradhari in Cuttack, NNKS convenor Akshay Kumar stated that around 3 lakh farmers from 30 districts will congregate on February 6 to gherao the Odisha Assembly if the Cabinet fails to allocate necessary funds for the farmers in the upcoming budget.

“We have been demanding a security allowance of Rs 5000 per month for 36 lakh farmers. If the government doesn’t make any announcement on security allowance, again 36 lakh farmers will march towards Bhubaneswar to question the government,” said Kumar.

Bhubaneswar: Amid the mega convention of thousands of farmers in Lower PMG here over price, pension and prestige, the convenor of Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) Akshay Kumar on Monday threatened the state government to take the agitation to every nook and corner of the state as a non-cooperation movement if their demands are not fulfilled.

Earlier yesterday, police attempted to foil the rally of farmers marching to Bhubaneswar to take part in the mega convention by imposing section 144 in Tamando area on the outskirts of the city, however, it failed to make any impact.

“The police tried to deter the farmers from coming to submit their grievances here, so the farmers will now not allow politicians, ministers to enter villages. Until the government accepts our demands to pass an ordinance for budgetary allocation of Rs 21,600 crore for 36 lakh farmers, non-cooperation movement will spread from panchayat to block and district level. Farmers may stop politicians from visiting villages or even gherao block offices, police stations and this might severely affect the upcoming elections,” Kumar said.

Meanwhile, even though an inter-ministerial committee comprising Agriculture and Panchayati Raj Minister and Cooperative Minister has been formed under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera to prepare terms of reference to discuss the demands of farmers, the latter have alleged that it is just another attempt to cheat them.

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of mega farmers’ convention in Bhubaneswar, former Kendrapara MP Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda today extended support to the agitation launched by farmers under the aegis of Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) demanding price, prestige and pension.

Joining the farmers’ mega rally near Phulnakhara-Pahala road, Panda condemned the attempts being made by Odisha government to throttle the voices of farmers.

The statement comes in the wake of the imposition of section 144 near Tamando by police to prevent farmer outfits to enter Bhubaneswar ahead of their proposed convention.

“Thousands of farmers from across the State are staging a peaceful agitation and the way attempts are being made by the administration to obstruct them is not justified. Besides, various goonda vahinis are also creating  nuisance and there is a possibility of reaction the way farmers are being provoked,” said Panda while appealing Odisha government not to obstruct the farmers in staging peaceful agitation as their demands are genuine.

Panda also asserted that it is the responsibility of both Odisha government and the Centre to resolve the problems of the farmers. However, so far various promises made to the farmers are yet to be fulfilled.

“Be it the issue of setting up cold storage or providing irrigation facilities in all block level, such promises are yet to be fulfilled. On one hand, the Odisha government is gearing up for the Make in Odisha Conclave and on other industrial houses are being harassed in the State,” said Panda.

Convenor of NNKS Akhaya Kumar said, “We have given time to the government to take concrete steps to address our issues by tomorrow and if that does not happen, we will intensify our ‘satygraha’ agitation after 11 am.”

Different political parties have also lent support to the farmers’ agitation. The BJP has targeted Odisha government for its failure to address the grievances of the farmers in the State.

“We support the farmers’ agitation. Already PM Narendra Modi has taken a lot of measures to double the farmers’income in the country. But is unfortunate that due to wrong policies and ‘PC’ culture of Odisha government, the farmers are deprived of various welfare schemes,” said BJP leader Samir Mohanty.

BJD spokesperson Sameer Dash, on the other hand, claimed that the farmers across the country are facing problems.

“Six months back, the Supreme Court had asked Centre to submit an affidavit on what can be done to improve the condition of farmers as part of the uniform policy in the country. But the Centre is dilly-dallying the matter and our party will definitely cooperate whatever decision is taken on farmers’ issue,” said Dash.

Congress leader and former MP Pradip Majhi also joined a farmer rally in his constituency and warned the state government to immediately address the issues of the farmers.

Meanwhile, keeping in view of possible law and order situation and traffic problems, the Commissionerate Police has taken adequate steps.

“We have deployed 25 platoons of police force to maintain peace and ensure that law and order situation does not arise due to their agitation. The farmer outfits have also been directed not to block or create disturbance on national highways or city roads,” Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahu said.

Cuttack: Protesting government’s callous attitude towards their long-standing demands for fair price, pension and prestige, farmers under the aegis of Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) took to streets today.

More than 30,000 farmers from across different parts of Cuttack district took out a rally in the city today and protested government’s silence on their demands.

Convenor of NNKS, Akshay Kumar who led the agitation gave an ultimatum to the state government and Centre and said that if they don’t listen to their demands, then around 3 lakh farmers will cripple the state in coming October. “The farmers’ outfit had demanded a provision of Rs 21,600 crore for the security allowance in the state’s annual budget. Even as the government had promised to fulfil our demands on March 21, it is yet to do so.”

Similarly, NNKS State Coordinator Seshadev Nanda said, “The Naveen-led government is only campaigning and making fake promises, but on the other hand seeds are lying unused in mandis, farmers are unable to sell their produce and are not getting loans.”

The NNKS has also submitted a memorandum in this regard to the district collector. Sources said the outfit will launch a mega agitation against the government in coming October and November.

Bhubaneswar: Demanding price, pension and prestige, thousands of farmers under the banner of Navanirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS), a farmers’ outfit, have resorted to an agitation from Gajpati district.

The agitating farmers congregated at the district headquarters in Paralakhemundi, staged a demonstration and later gheraoed the Collector office yesterday demanding proper price for their produces, pension and prestige for them.

The agitators have also demanded creation of a special corpus fund for farmers and allocation of Rs 21,600 crore in the budget for 2018-19.

The members of the outfit also called upon the farmers to put pressure on the State government for fulfillment of their demands.

“The farmers alleged that the BJD government has neglected the farmers’ collective interest and remained indifferent to their demands. Hence, Navanirman Krushak Sangathan has decided to fight a battle for the farmers’ rights,” said a member of the outfit.

Sangathan coordinator Aksahya Kumar said, “There is lack of irrigation facilities, market linkage and Mandis in every district. Farmers are not getting proper price for their produce. We demand Rs 5,000 per month as pension for each farmer which comes to around Rs 21,600 crore annually for nearly 36 lakh farmers in the State.  The Sangathan would continue their stir until 70 per cent of farmers in the State are not rehabilitated.”

Bhubaneswar: With onion prices touching Rs 45 per kg across Odisha, Food and Civil Supplies department has directed the Collectors to keep a watch on illegal hoarding and black marketing to ensure availability of the tuber to consumers.

In a letter, the Supplies department has asked all collectors to initiate action against unscrupulous traders.

“The Civil Supplies and Market Intelligence field functionaries under your control may be instructed to inspect both the wholesale and retail business premises on a regular basis to track the price line till normalcy is restored. If situation arises, action may be initiated against the unscrupulous traders as per the provision of Odisha Declaration of Stock and Price of Essential Commodities Order, 1973 & Odisha Potato and Onion (Storage Control) Order, 2015,” the letter read.

The farmers, who had recently sold onions at Rs 4 -5 per kg due to lack of storage facilities, are now forced to purchase the same at an exorbitant rate from the market. Lower imports of the item from major onion growing States have compounded the situation.

“We sold our produce at Rs 5 or 6 per kg, but when it comes to purchase, the price is as high as Rs 30-40-50,”, Debachandra Bagarti, a farmer from Titilagarh said.

Not only Debachandra, but many other fellow farmers across the State are grappling with the same situation.

Echoing similar views, another farmer said “Lack of storage facilities forced us to sell the tuber at throwaway prices, but we are now purchasing it at a higher rate.”

On the other hand traders have attributed the price rise to decrease in harvest in the major supplying states like Andhra and Maharastra. “The price of old stock onion has remained high. The newly harvested onions are yet to arrive in the market. Moreover, the rate in Nashik and Andhra Pradesh is also higher than Odisha. If new produce comes to the market at the earliest, the prices are likely to come down,” Debendranath Sahoo, Chhatra Bazar traders’ association secretary said.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Surya Narayan Patro expects prices to decline in the next 15 days. “The newly-harvested onion will reach Odisha market in next 15 days. I hope rates will come down. But, we have asked the Collectors to keep a watch on unscrupulous traders who usually hoard onions during scarcity,” Patro said.

Bhubaneswar: Thousands of farmers from across Odisha are staging a huge demonstration under the banner of Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) at Lower PMG Square here on Wednesday demanding fulfillment of their various demands.

According to sources, farmers from across the state took out of a rally after gathering in large numbers at Cuttack railway station yesterday.

“The government should not run away from its responsibilities. It needs to admit the suicide of farmers and compensate the next of kin of the deceased. Besides, we demand of Rs 5, 000 per month pension scheme for 36 lakh farmers so that their future is taken care of,” said NKS leader and Aama Odisha Party (AOP) President Soumya Ranjan Patnaik.

The farmers are set to hold a large demonstration at Lower PMG Square here after a night halt near Hanspal to press their long pending demands such as implementation of pension scheme for farmers , payment of compensation to the kin of farmers who committed suicide, higher minimum support price, better procurement facilities, better social accord and drought compensation, among others, sources added.

“We are demanding that the government should give pension to farmers from the age of 20. Besides, we are holding this huge rally to ensure prestige, price and pension for all farmers across the state,” said Seshadeb Nanda, a member of the association.

Meanwhile, the BJD defended the state government saying it has actively supported farmers through various schemes.

“The state government has fixed minimum support price for farmers and at different points of time, government takes steps to provide more bonus and financial assistance. So, there is no point in pressing demands like this,” said BJD spokesperson Rabinarayan Nanda.
