The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to intensify its campaign and attack on the ruling BJD on the OBC reservation issue. 

The Odisha government’s new reservation list for different posts of PRIs like Sarpanch, Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad members and chairmen of Blocks and Zilla Parishads will boomerang on the BJD, Opposition parties claimed on Wednesday. 

The scuffle reportedly broke out after a section of the BJD workers alleged massive irregularities in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and Public Distribution System (PDS) in the region.

The Odisha government on Friday re-published the draft list of reservations for the post of Zilla Parishad (ZP) Presidents across the State ahead of the forthcoming elections to the Panchayat Elections.

The Congress alleged that the BJD seems to be engaged in giving alms to people and buying votes instead of thinking about the development of Odisha.

With the Panchayat election in Odisha expected in February next year, the political environment in rural areas is getting charged up. 

In 2017, polls were conducted in 6,801 village panchayats. However, their number has reduced to 6,794 for the upcoming polls. The panchayats that have been excluded from the list include 4 from Balasore's Remuna NAC, 2 from Nayagarh's Odagaon and one from Bargarh's Bijepur.

The highest number of warrants were executed with 592 arrests in Balasore district, followed by Ganjam district with 551 and Khordha with 516 arrests.

The Odisha government on Friday issued the final list of reservations for the post of Zilla Parishad presidents across the State ahead of the forthcoming Panchayat elections. 

Jayant Kishan, the president of the Kuchinda Youth Congress unit was brutally thrashed by a mob suspected to be members of the rival Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

The recent resignation of Pradeep Majhi from Odisha Congress seemed to have spurred the party high-command to revisit its strategy in the State ahead of the crucial panchayat elections in the State.

Ahead of the panchayat elections in Odisha, two groups in the Kandhamal unit of the Biju Janata Dal engaged in a tense encounter bringing the cracks in the party out to open.

Singh slammed ruling BJD government in the State and came down heavily on the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over his governance policy.

"We will keep the ballot boxes in the strong rooms at block level," said State Election Commissioner Padhy.

Amid a state-wide backlash over inadequate representation of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) for the other posts in the three-tier elections to the Panchayati Raj institutions, the Odisha government has allotted four (4) Zilla Parishad president posts to OBCs.
