Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced huge cash reward for the athletes from the state, who would be able to bag medals in the Olympic Games in Tokyo starting July 23. While the state government will provide Rs 6 crore to those winning gold, Rs 4 crore for silver and Rs 2.5 crore for bronze. Patnaik made this announcement during a virtual interaction with the athletes from the state who have qualified for the games.

In view of the raging COVID-19 cases, the Tokyo Olympics will be held under a state of emergency in Japan without spectators from July 23 to August 8.

Just two weeks ago, organisers and the IOC allowed venues to be filled to 50 per cent of capacity but crowds not to exceed 10,000. The state of emergency has forced a late turnaround, which was always an option if infections got worse.
