Bringing cheer to the faces of people associated with the film industry, the Odisha government decided to bring a new film policy before March 2024. The decision was taken at an important meeting chaired by Secretary of the Industry Department, Hemant Sharma held on November 28, 2023.
At the meeting, a decision was taken to simplify the Odisha State Film Policy 2019 and launch a new policy before March, 2024. The policy will focus on film production in the Odia language and the establishment of single multiplexes in rural areas.
It was also decided that subsidy would be provided to the producers making films with good storylines; subsidies would also be provided to those keen to construct new cinema halls; steps would be taken to advertise Odia films in villages through Mission Shakti and steps will be taken to renovate around 40 film halls which are lying closed.
Eminent Odia actor, movie director, and producer, Chittaranjan Tripathy was appointed as the new director of the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi.
Chittaranjan is the first person from Odisha to hold the prestigious position. He hails from Chandbali area in Bhadrak district. Apart from being an actor, director, and producer, he is also a storyteller, screenplay writer, music director, lyricist, and playback singer.
A batch mate of Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui at NSD, Chittaranjan has directed Odia movies like ‘Dhauli Express’ and ‘Mukhya Mantri’. He has also acted in many Odia movies. In 2007, ‘Dhauli Express’ received three Odisha State Film Awards.
After ‘DAMaN’, ‘Pratikshya’ brought glory to the Odia Film Industry by bagging the National Award for Best Feature Film in Odia.
While eminent Odia producer and director late Amiya Patnaik’s son, Anupam Patnaik was the director of the movie, its star cast included Dipanwit Dashmohapatra, Choudhury Jayprakash Das, Barsha Patnaik, Sreela Tripathy, Susil Mishra, Roopambika Nayak and Sidhant Mohapatra in a special appearance.
The plot of the film was inspired by a short story written by noted author Gaurahari Das and some true incidents. Noted Bollywood actor Anupam Kher had announced that he would make a remake of ‘Pratikshya’ in Hindi.
In the year 2023, the Odia film industry lost a versatile actor, Pintu Nanda. He breathed his last at 11.25 pm on March 1 while undergoing treatment at a Hyderabad-based hospital.
Suffering from liver cirrhosis, the actor was admitted to a Bhubaneswar-based hospital on February 1. On February 7, he was flown to New Delhi and was admitted to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS). Meanwhile, a family member was supposed to donate liver to him. But that couldn’t be materialised due to mismatching of blood groups and other reasons.
As per the rules, one can’t get organs from a living person. Organs can only be harvested from a dead person. So he was shifted to Hyderabad’s Yoshada Hospital. His last rites were performed at Swargadwara in Puri.
Popular music director and composer Swarup Nayak passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack on October 27, 2023, leaving a void forever.
Nayak was popular for his contribution to the Odia film industry. His popular works and film credits include I Love You, and Pua Mora Bhola Shankar. Since the 80s, Nayak has been active in Ollywood and carved a niche for himself in the industry.
Apart from composing and music direction, he also acted in some films. Nayak created a sensation with his versatility which was also reflected in films like Premi No.1 and I Love You.
Nayak was also instrumental in helping several actors, especially the debutants to create a different fan base, through his songs.
The mortal remains of popular music director and composer Swarup Nayak were consigned to flames with full state honour at Satichaura crematorium in Cuttack on October 28.
Eminent Odia playback singer Pranab Kishore Patnaik had to be admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar following her complaint of illness.
His fans and well-wishers prayed for his speedy recovery and it worked. A few days later, he was discharged from the hospital.
Born on January 20, 1938, Patnaik started his musical journey in 1958 when he made his debut in the film ‘Maa’. With his soulful voice, he struck a chord with the music lovers from his very first film. Patnaik has lent his voice to different genres of music such as Odissi, bhajans, semi-classical, traditional, folks, and ghazals, and dominated the industry for over five decades.
He has the opportunity to sing with renowned singers including Usha Mangeshkar, Bhupinder Singh, Hemelata, Vani Jayram, and S Janaki. A recipient of Jayadev Samman- the highest film award of the state, he ruled the industry for over five decades.
Odia cine actor Manoj Mishra came into the firing line of some film producers in Ollywood. They have reportedly decided to boycott the well-known actor in their upcoming films for two years. They alleged that the actor was behind the protest in Sambalpur against the Odia film Ram featuring Arindam Roy and Anubhav Mohanty. However, actor Mishra pleaded his innocence.
Trouble for Mishra further mounted when Sanlisha Patel, the producer of Pratha, filed an online FIR against him at Jharsuguda.
The Commissionerate Police on November 4 arrested film producer Sanjay Nayak also known as Tutu Nayak on charges of slapping lady journalist Debasmita Rout in Bhubaneswar on November 3.
After his production in court, he was sent to 14-day judicial custody. The SDJM Court Bhubaneswar on November 8 granted bail to Nayak.
Notably, a female journalist, identified as Debasmita Rout, had accused him of assaulting her in full public view. Following which, the police arrested him.
Before this, he was in the eye of the storm after imposing a ban on actor Manoj Mishra for two years.
Putting an end to the long and bitter legal battle, the Orissa High Court on December 21 granted divorce to MP Anubhav Mohanty from his actress wife Varsha Priyadarshini.
While allowing the couple to part ways, the High Court overturned the ruling of the Cuttack family court that had earlier rejected the divorce petition of the couple.
Ollywood actor and BJD MP Anubhav Mohanty earlier moved the Orissa High Court challenging the decision of Cuttack Family Court which had rejected his divorce petition against his wife and film actress Varsha Priyadarshini.
The family court quashed the divorce petition last month after the couple could not prove their allegations and counter allegations.
Sanlisha Patel, the producer of Pratha, has filed an online FIR against Manoj Mishra at Jharsuguda.
In her FIR, Patel alleged that a group of nearly 150 persons vandalised posters and banners of the film ‘Pratha’ at Jharsuguda film hall on Friday while the film was being screened in the presence of her family members.
“They created trouble during the screening of the film and threatened the hall staff to halt the screening and run the movie ‘Mind Game’ instead. They said ‘Cuttacki’ film will not be allowed here. The troublemakers shouted slogans against the Odia film and threatened the hall owner,” she lamented.

Pratha, centered on a story in Koraput, was dubbed in three languages and released in 48 cinema halls across the state. Many Bollywood artistes are featured in the film.
Alleging that actor Manoj Mishra and his supporters are behind all such incidents, the lady producer demanded the immediate arrest of the actor.
She asked why a film produced in the Koraput dialect should be opposed in Jharsuguda. She urged the state government to intervene in the matter.
Speaking to the media, she argued why producers should invest crores of rupees for film production if they face such kinds of troubles during the screening.
No comments have been received from Manoj Mishra.
While addressing a press conference, Mishra said, “The government has not only repeatedly been hurting the sentiments of the Western Odisha people but also meting out step-motherly treatment. At a time when resentment is brewing among the people of Western Odisha for the government is paying no heed to their demands, a new issue of treating the artistes of Western Odisha disrespectfully has cropped up. Manoj Mishra issue is not an isolated case although it may have added fuel to the fire.”
“Manoj Mishra has already clarified his points. He has denied the allegations levelled against him. Some artistes alleged politics has entered into the dispute. Then I said that the politicians have a right to interfere in everything, whatever may be the issue. If an issue triggers public resentment, whether it may be the issue of teachers, doctors, or water, there will be politics. Because it is a part of the politics,” he said.
“Nuakhai is observed for two days in Western Odisha. The second day is observed enthusiastically. The attitude of the government hurt the sentiments of the Western Odisha people. After my comments were telecast, the government postponed the Speaker election. Similarly, the government has yet to take any decision to make the Western Odisha language an official language. Modi and Naveen Babu are friends. If the Santhali language could be made the official language, why not Western Odisha’s languages, be it Koshali or Sambalpuri? What the Chief Minister is doing. This has hurt the people of Western Odisha,” he said.
“It is none other than the Chief Minister who can resolve any issue. In Manoj Mishra boycott issue, he should convene a meeting between both sides. Had they served a show-cause notice before boycotting Manoj Mishra? They are saying that they would withdraw the boycott. Why they are not doing that? If they didn’t invite him to the meeting before boycotting him, why they are now inviting him for discussion?” he said.
When asked about the solution to the ongoing issue pertaining to Manoj Mishra, he said, “When a situation becomes worse, it needs a solution. A fire should be put out before it turns the house into ashes. Why the state government is sitting idle? Why the Chief Minister is keeping mum? Perhaps, he wants Odisha should be divided into two parts. If it happens, I would hold the Chief Minister responsible.”
The female journalist in her complaint alleged that the producer slapped her and hurled filthy language at her while she was in a film hall to cover an event today.
Registering a case on the basis of the complaint lodged at the Khavel Nagar Police Station, the police have started an investigation.
While speaking to the media, the female journalist said “Today I came to a film hall to cover the release of an Odia film. I was at the entrance to get the bites of the artistes. He was (Tutu Nayak) then passing through the entrance. If I was standing on the pathway, he should have asked me to make way. Instead of that he slapped me on my cheek from behind. When I turned around, my boom and phone fell on the ground. And, instead of apologizing, he left the place smiling. He should have talked to me. Without saying anything, he left the place which hurt me deeply. I demand action against him.”
When contacted over his mobile phone, Nayak said, “The allegation is false. I was in a hurry to go to Maharaja Film Hall. As she was standing in the middle of the gate, I mildly patted her back asking her to give me space. She is like my younger sister. I didn’t beat her. If I hurt her, I am sorry for that.”
When asked for his comments, actor Bobby Mishra said, “Journalists are the fourth pillar of Democracy. They command respect. If a journalist is misbehaved with, it is condemnable. Strong action should be taken against the person involved.”
Addressing a press conference yesterday, actor Arindam Roy, whose film RAM was recently released, appealed to Mishra to bury the hatchet and work together for the betterment of the Odia film industry. The former had also asked the latter to resolve the issue through discussions.
While responding to Arindam’s appeal, Mishra on Monday said, “I am yet to understand what dispute you want to settle with me. I have not opposed the movie RAM. I have not asked anyone to stop the movie. Without any proof and information, Tutu Nayak and Company boycotted me. Due to this, my film MINDGAME has suffered a huge loss. If the film is going houseful at INOX, Cinepolis, and in Bargarh in the fourth week of its release, it means it would have been houseful across Odisha. Can you imagine Arindam, how much loss my producer has suffered due to Tutu Nayak?”
“If you actually want to end the discord, then you first ask Tutu Nayak to clarify the grounds on which boycotted me. Then he should make sure that all cinema halls run the shows of MINDGAME. Then we will sit to find out a solution, though I don’t know what is there to be sorted out,” said Mishra.
The controversy kicked off when the president of the Utkal Cine Chambers of Commerce (UCCC), Sanjay Nayak, also known as Tutu Nayak, announced that they had evidence that Manoj Mishra was responsible for the protest against the film RAM featuring Arindam and Anubhav in Sambalpur, for which he has been boycotted by a group of producers for a period of two years.
Later in the day, the cine producers’ association, while addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, announced that the boycott decision on Manoj Mishra will not be lifted for the time being.
"The boycott decision has not been taken in any Kangaroo court. It is our decision. He is not keen to resolve the issue because he is not coming for a discussion. Now he is using it for publicity," said the association.
However, the Odia Film Producers’ and Distributors’ Guild has opposed the boycott of actor Manoj Mishra. Secretary of Odia Film Producers’ and Distributors’ Guild, Arun Mohanty said, "We don’t accept the reported boycott on Manoj Mishra. We demand that the boycott should be revoked immediately.”
On the other hand, actor Arindam Roy once again appealed to Manoj Mishra in his Facebook post to take steps to end the row. He urged Mishra not to support a bandh called on November 15.
“I would like to request you (Manoj Mishra) to end the ongoing controversy. You can end it by asking your fans to put to rest whatever is going on. A minor squabble between two stars is going to divide the state. It is being politicized and is not good. It is our own interests that matter,” said Roy.
“I have been trying to contact you since morning. I have also texted messages requesting you to talk to me so that we can solve the matter. When there is no letter mentioning your ban, then why is this controversy? The situation is coming to such a pass that people are blaming the Odia film industry,” he added.
“Such an unsavoury controversy has come up at a time when we have started producing good films. It is the responsibility of all who are associated with the film industry to keep it alive. Through the media, I would like to request you to forget the past. I have suffered financial losses and you have as well. Just let bygones and be bygones and we should think about the future. I again request you to resolve the issue through mutual discussion. It is like our family matter and there should be no intervention from outsiders in our family matter,” observed Roy.
Nayak passed away at 76 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital on Friday. He had been battling lung cancer for the past several years.
Many personalities from various fields like art, film, culture, music and politics paid their last respect to the music director at his residence in Cuttack in the morning before his body was taken for last rites to Satichaura crematorium.
His elder daughter Nibruti Nayak ignited the funeral pyre as per tradition.
Grieving over Nayak’s death, dialogue writer, Bijay Malla, who was present during the cremation, said, “The passing away of Swarup Nayak is a great loss to the Odia film industry. The kind of music Nayak has produced, be it romantic, patriotic or satiric, inspires and encourages a race. His death is also a loss to the Odia race. Nayak’s music was completely different.”
Cuttack Collector Narahari Sethi said, "Nayak has immensely contributed to the world of Odia music and the Odia film industry. He was a great lyricist, music composer and director. For his contribution to the music and film industry, he was given guard of honour on behalf of the state government before cremation.”

In the 80’s, Nayak was active in Ollywood and carved a niche for himself in the industry with his music.
Apart from composing and music direction, he also played roles in some Odia films. Nayak was known for his musical works in the films like Premi No.1 and I Love You.
Swarup Nayak was conferred the Lifetime Achievement award by the Tarang Cine Productions for his contribution to Odia music.
Addressing a press conference, actor Mishra, who has been banned by the Utkal Cine Chambers of Commerce for a period of two years, said he wouldn’t act in any of Tutu Nayak’s films.
“The film industry is not confined to Cuttack and Bhubaneswar only. The industry is of entire Odisha and I am an Odia. I am yet to receive any letter regarding my ban. However, producer Tutu Nayak has told before media that I have been banned. And I am now saying that I have banned that Tutu Nayak. I won’t act in his films in my lifetime,” said Mishra.
“Who is he (Tutu Nayak) to ban me? I am hearing that he is conspiring against me. I feel my life is under threat,” added the actor.
When journalists asked actor Mishra about his opinion on Odisha having been divided into two parts over the controversy, he parried the question and left the place.
Meanwhile, Congress leader’s interference in the film industry matter has not gone down well with some, including senior actor and Odisha Film Development Corporation (OFDC) President, Kuna Tripathy.
“I do not like outsiders (Narasingha Mishra) fuelling the dispute by putting ghee on it. There is an Artist's Association in Odisha in which all these disputes are raised and resolved. I call upon both parties to come to the office and discuss the matter. I am sure the dispute will be resolved within 2-3 days,” said Tripathy.
He observed, “The discord among artistes should not be taken forward and ended immediately. The matter should be sorted out mutually at a personal level. I felt hurt after what I saw on social media.”
He said, “Personally, I respect Manoj Dada and also like him. I know he has been hurt emotionally after the issue. I am also hurt. I personally make apologies to him.”
He further added,"If sentiments linked to Sambalpur have been bruised, I also tender my apologies."
Describing himself and his mother Aparajita Mohanty as Sambalpurias, Babushaan said, "The feelings for Sambalpur can’t be hurt by anybody. Sambalpur is within us and all Odias.”
“Again, I make a humble request to all artistes to not escalate what has happened. I also personally request Manoj Babu to initiate efforts to resolve it. As soon as the issue is sorted out, it will be good for the industry,” Mohanty added.

A few days ago, some cinema producers held a meeting and discussed about a campaign to boycott movie Ram in Sambalpur. The producers claimed that it was Manoj Mishra who engineered a protest against the movie in Sambalpur as Manoj had some differences of opinion with actor Jitu Mangaraj.
At the meeting actor, Arindam Roy alleged that Jitu Mangaraj had spoken against Manoj Mishra before the media. Protesting this, some people threatened the producers not to allow the release of their films featuring Jitu Manjaraj in cinema halls in Sambalpur or western Odisha as a whole.
Later, Sanjay Nayak, president of the Utkal Cine Chambers of Commerce (UCCC), said that Manoj Mishra was responsible for the protest against Ram film in Sambalpur and all producers decided to not sign Manoj Mishra in their future projects for two years.
Sabyasachi Mishra, the protagonist of the movie, was also seen spending time with the cine lovers and interacting with them to know about the immediate reactions of the audience.
Since the opening day, the film, based on noted writer Sankar Tripathy’s Odia novel ‘Nadabindu’, has been receiving rave reviews from critics as well as common cine-goers.
“I would like to thank the audience who devoted their costly two hours to watch ‘Pushkara’. I hope, the film wouldn’t have disappointed them,” said a visibly elated Sabyasachi.
Expressing his happiness after watching the film, a cine lover said, “After ‘Daman’ and ‘Pratiksha’, ‘Pushkara’ has come to win cine lovers’ hearts. It is a matter of pride that our Odia film industry is marching forward, delivering quality films one after the other. I would like to watch such films in the coming days.”
A delighted cine lover said, “In my opinion, the visualization of the film is superb. With this film, Subhranshu Das has made his debut as a director and he did a commendable job. And, the acting of Sabyasachi and Supriya, the lead stars of the film, is quite up to the mark. For the first time I saw the morning show being a houseful.”
Another elderly audience said, “The film hasn’t let us down. It is a quite good and heart-touching movie. It can be watched with family members. It has dealt with some real facts described in the novel.”
When asked about his reactions, a teenager said, “What I like the most is that the story of the film is an original one. Most importantly, it is promoting our Odia culture and tradition. I would like to request to all the production houses to deliver such films having real content. And then only they would see such an overwhelming response. Sabysachi has given full justice to his character.”
The film was released on the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi on September 19. It is now being screened in 25 cities in Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore, Jajpur, Rourkela, Sambalpur and Sundargarh.
Informing about the future course of action, Cuttack Zone II ACP Amitabh Mohapatra said the singer would soon be arrested.
“The Orissa High Court has rejected Sourin Bhatt’s bail petition and vacated the interim protection it had granted. Now we will try to arrest him. After discussion with the DCP and getting information about his whereabouts, a team will leave to arrest him,” he said.
“We will focus on two locations-the first one is Kolkata, his native place and the second is Mumbai where he was staying. Last time too, a team had gone to Kolkata. Even though his mobile phone still remains switched off, we will gather our own information and then a team will be sent to arrest him,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that a woman on June 12 had accused the Ollywood singer of sexually harassing her and cheating her of lakhs of rupees. A resident of Cuttack city, the complainant reportedly works in a private bank. As per her allegations, she had come in contact with the singer in 2015.
Fearing arrest, the singer had filed the anticipatory bail petition at the Orissa High Court. The court had granted interim protection to the singer on August 1. The Court had also directed the playback singer to cooperate in the police investigation whenever required.
Notably, a four-member team of Commissionerate Police had visited Sourin’s house in Kolkata on June 22. However, the team had to return empty-handed as the singer was in New Delhi.
It is an undisputed fact that film industries of all languages in India are going through a phase of crises since the COVID-19 days. But interestingly, these crises are mostly of their own making.
One of the most prominent reasons for the crises afflicting the Indian film industries, as said in the very first sentence of this column, lies with the ‘woods’ themselves.
Calling various film industries ‘woods’ of different varieties is symptomatic of the ills affecting the former. To clear the air, Hollywood is the place where the American Film Industry is based. However, the enthusiastic copycats that many of us Indians are, there has been an overwhelming urge to name film industries of every variety a ‘wood’. For instance, the Hindi film industry is called Bollywood, the Odia film industry is Ollywood, the Kannada film industry is Sandalwood, the Tamil film industry is Kollywood, and so on. This keen desire to ape the West is also reflected in the movies in the form of plagiarism in subtle as well as overt manner. Many of the films that are churned out are ‘inspired’ by hits of other movie industries like Hollywood and some are downright cheap clones of the originals.
In spite of the above, many of the Indian movies were doing reasonably good business drawing strength from star power of established actors and actresses with sizable fan followings. However, the COVID-19 pandemic upset their apple carts. Confined to their homes for months altogether, many of the movie watchers developed a taste for films with good content, mainly from the west. Some became fascinated with content of OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. which are better at storytelling than screen releases. Sky-high ticket prices at multiplexes and top stars taking away the lion’s share of a film’s budget are other factors that led to a disproportionate number of flops compared to hits in the various movie industries.
Then, is there light at the end of the tunnel? Yes, there is and many fast learners are adapting to the changed scenario to survive and flourish.
The overriding factor that pulls audiences to multiplexes and single-screen theaters is content or better storytelling. Here also, inspiring real-life stories and stories rooted in the soil and cultural milieu have greater chances of winning the movie watchers’ appreciation and thereby bringing in the moolah. Let’s take examples of such success stories in a few of the vernacular movie industries.
Our own Odia movie industry has been plagued by falling box office collections and decreasing number of releases over the past few decades. Lack of original stories, tough competition from Hindi movies, and the reluctance of theatre owners to provide screens have been the banes of ‘Ollywood.’ However, in recent times, two movies with strong storylines bucked the trend. ‘Daman’ which enjoyed consistently high ratings on IMDb (Internet Movie Database), became a huge hit in its Odia version. Demand from non-Odia audiences goaded the filmmakers to release the movie in Hindi which also did reasonably well. Another movie ‘Pratikshya’ also became commercially successful. What distinguished these two movies from the rest were the strong storylines, one real-life story (Daman) and another (Pratikshya) reflecting the day-to-day struggles of a middle-class family rooted in hard reality. Of course, the movies were backed by brilliant acting by the protagonists and other main characters, not to speak of the good direction.
Many regional films with Hindi sub-titles became runaway hits during the year 2022. One such movie that stood out from the rest was ‘Kantara’. Deeply rooted in the local culture of coastal Karnataka, it grossed more than Rs. 400 Crore worldwide against its production budget of about Rs. 16.00 Crore. Other regional movies which also raked good money were RRR, KGF Chapter 2, Ponniyin Selvan etc.
It’s not that no Hindi movie did good business in the recent past. ‘The Kashmir Files’, based on the plight of the Kashmiri Hindus who were forced by Islamists to leave the land of their ancestors in early 1990, became a super hit inspiring many other filmmakers to take the plunge into making movies based on real life stories.
To summarize, the following are the takeaways as far as the movie audience behaviour in India at present is concerned.
One, story of the film is the real star, not the actors and actresses eulogized by glamour-obsessed sections of the media and loved by millions of hysterical fans.
Secondly, the theme has to have its roots deep in the local culture and social milieu. Stories divorced from the experiences of the common man are, in all probability, bound to be the reason for the failure of the films.
Three, big-budget films with a major part of it paid to the ‘superstar/s’, start their journey to the box office at a disadvantage. On the other hand, movies made with modest budget and not-so-big names have greater chances of recovering money spent and more.
Last but not least, today’s movie audience is smart and it spends money after due deliberations and evaluating the market reports, both from traditional and social media, and also getting inputs from word-of-mouth publicity. Moviegoers can’t be fooled in today’s age. On the other hand, they have the capacity to make the extra smart filmmakers and actors who take the audience for granted, look like fools at the end.

The singer is yet to appear before the Mahila police station in Cuttack where the woman, who is an employee of a private bank, had lodged the complaint against him. The police have been looking for Bhatt since the registration of the case against him.
A special police team of the Commissionerate Police recently visited Kolkata, but the singer was absent from his residence.
The complainant, a resident of Cuttack city, reportedly works in a private bank. As per the allegations of the complainant, she had come in contact with the singer in 2015.
She alleged that the singer exploited her, both physically and mentally, with the false promise of a break in singing. She also alleged that he cheated her of some money.
She had first approached Jagatpur police station and then lodged her complaint with the Mahila police station. A case under Sections 376, 493, 341, 294, 417 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered in this connection. The statement of the complainant has also been recorded under section 161 of the CrPC.
Joining the league on Wednesday, Jatra artiste Rani Priyadarshini unleashed an attack while narrating her ordeal in the industry.
Rani said, “Casting couch exists in Ollywood. No newcomer gets a break without being subjected to casting couch. Those who have taken that route have destroyed their career, while those who did not compromise are now considered as successful in the film industry.”
With actors like Prakruti Mishra, Jasmine Rath, and Pupul Bhuyan levelling allegations of casting couch against film producer Sanjay Nayak aka Tutu Nayak, several questions have now cropped up.
If the allegations are true, then who are the persons behind the casting couch practice? Why no action has been taken against the accused? Instead of complaining on the proper forum, why the victims are opening up on social media platforms and mainstream media?
On the other hand, Ollywood actress, Rupashree Panda put the blame on aspiring actresses for casting couch cases that have recently hogged the headlines.
"Only producers and casting directors cannot be blamed for casting couch, aspiring actresses are responsible too. Some of them (Actresses) do not have any hesitation to offer their bodies in return for work. Moreover, there are some actresses who trap producers by levelling false casting couch allegations,” Panda said.
Meanwhile, several actors and cine critics opined that such incidents are setting bad precedents for the cine industry.
“The Odia cine industry must not earn a bad name for such things. Every industry has its positives and negatives. We must focus on enhancing the positive things in our industry,” said Mousumi Nayak, an actress.
“There are many actresses who are far from such controversies and known in every household. There are some, who are doing it for publicity. This is not acceptable,” said Dilip Hali, a cine critic.
The complainant reportedly works in a private bank. As per the allegations, the complainant had come in contact with the playback singer in 2015.
The complainant alleged that Sourin Bhatt has exploited her, both physically and mentally, on the pretext of giving her false promises.
A case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections- 376, 493, 341, 294, 417 and 506 has been registered in this connection. The statements of the complainant has also been recorded under section 161 of the CrPC.
Meanwhile, Sourin Bhatt could not be contacted over the allegations.
Speaking about the matter, Cuttack DCP Pinak Mishra said, “A woman has alleged that the playback singer has kept relation with her on the false promises of a break in singing and also cheated her of some money. We have asked her to file a complaint at Mahila Police Station. Once the FIR is registered, appropriate action will be taken and the playback singer and others will be called for investigation.”
The allegations against Sourin Bhatt come in the backdrop of the recent storm created in Ollywood over casting couch allegations. While speaking to a media channel, actress Prakruti Mishra had said that in a Whatsapp group, some girls alleged that Sanjay Nayak was involved in the casting couch. Nayak would ask the newcomers to do compromises.
Film producer Sanjay Nayak aka Tutu Nayak later termed the allegations baseless while addressing a press conference. Nayak also said that he would file a defamation case against the two heroines and the news channel that broadcast their statements.
According to sources, Prakruti lodged a written complaint against Nayak at Dadabhai Naoroji Police Station in Andheri West alleging that the filmmaker’s statement has defamed her and her family.
Acting on the complaint lodged by the actress, the Police have registered a case against Nayak under Sec 500, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), sources informed.
Earlier while speaking to a private channel, Prakruti had said that in a Whatsapp group, some girls alleged that Sanjay Nayak was involved in casting couch. He would ask the newcomers to do compromises for work, Prakruti alleged.
A day after Prakruti these allegations against Nayak, the producer dismissed the charges and termed them baseless while addressing a press conference.
Nayak had also said he would file a defamation case against the two actresses and the news channel that broadcast their statements.
Speaking to OTV, Bhuyan said while 99 percent of the people in Ollywood are clean, there are still one percent who would force newcomers to compromise in order to get work in the industry.
“There are a lot of talented girls who come to get work in Ollywood, but they suddenly disappear after doing one or two projects. It indicates, more than talent, there is something else that is required to get enough work in the industry. The girls who refuse to compromise in the industry, disappear into oblivion,” Bhuyan said.
Asked about her own experience, Bhuyan said, “Casting couch happened to me as well. When I came to Ollywood in search of work, I was approached to compromise too. However, I denied their advancements and went away. Later, I came back with the help of reality shows, met good people, and established myself with the help of my talent. I am at such a level now, nobody will approach me that way.”
She advised the newcomers to not lose hope. “There are a lot of good people in Ollywood who prioritize talent over sexual favours. So do not lose hope and work till success comes to you. And if somebody asks sexual favours from you in return of work, then expose them,” Bhuyan said.
Meanwhile, film producer Sanjay Nayak, also known as Tutu Nayak, against whom actress Prakruti Mishra leveled serious allegations of casting couch, termed all the allegations baseless.
said he would file a defamation case against Prakruti Mishra and the news channel that broadcast their statements.
“The industry knows who I am. I would like to thank those Odisha people who supported me as they know who I am. I know Prakruti as the daughter of Manmath Mishra and I have nothing to do with what she is doing," Nayak said.
Nayak said he would file a defamation case against the two heroines and the news channel that broadcast their statements.
“The industry knows who I am. I would like to thank those Odisha people who supported me as they know who I am. I know Prakruti Mishra as the daughter of Manmath Mishra and I have nothing to do with what she is doing," Nayak said.
"In Babushaan case, as a guardian, I had said some actresses get works through superstars, but they shouldn’t ruin anyone’s house. I hadn’t said anything bad about her (Prakruti Mishra's). But she had since been nurturing a grudge against me and yesterday she used bad words against me. I have discussed with my advocate and will file defamation cases against the two heroines and the news channel that talked about me without any proof,” said Nayak.
Notably, while speaking to a private channel, Mishra had said that in a Whatsapp group, some girls alleged that Sanjay Nayak was involved in the casting couch. He would ask the newcomers to do compromises.
According to sources, the staff of Parija’s production house, artistes and technicians working in Shanti serial, have accused the film producer of not paying their dues.
Besides, they also staged a protest outside Parija’s production house located at Kateni area, on the outskirts of the capital city.
“The serial wound up on January 4 and he (Parija) should have cleared the dues on the same day. But he made excuses and kept on delaying. When we resisted, he said he will make the payments on March 25, but did not keep his words,” said an artist.
Meanwhile, Parija has refuted the allegations levelled against him and said they are baseless.
“Only six-seven persons were protesting outside the production house. The woman who was speaking to reporters said the due was not paid for the last two months. I have been in the industry for the last 13 years and produced over 12,000 episodes. No complaint was raised in these years. Even after losses in crores, I have been giving salaries to everyone. I am into television serial production for generating employment opportunities, not for business,” Parija clarified.

The actor’s mortal remains were flown back to Bhubaneswar on Thursday night, turning the atmosphere at the Biju Patnaik International Airport gloomy. Actors, actresses, his fans and followers turned up in large numbers to have a last glimpse of their favourite actor.
Thereafter, the body was taken to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. The hospital on Friday morning witnessed a huge gathering of Ollywood actors, actresses and fans.
“We will take his mortal remains to our house and from there we will proceed to Puri,” said Pintu’s brother Abhiram Nanda.
“Arranging money to meet the transplant cost was not so much difficult for us, but what was difficult for us was to arrange a donor. He was taken to Delhi and then to Hyderabad. His body perhaps couldn’t tolerate and he lost his battle for life,” said Akhila, an actor.
“I had deep faith in God that nothing bad would happen to him (Pintu Nanda). But fate had something different in store for him,” said Rani Priyadarshini, an actress.
Notably, after a 17-day-long struggle for life, Pintu, who was suffering from liver cirrhosis, finally gave in on Wednesday night.
Initially, he was admitted to a Bhubaneswar-based private hospital. On February 7, he was flown to New Delhi and was admitted to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS). A family member was supposed to donate liver to him. But that couldn’t be materialised due to mismatching of blood groups and other reasons.
As per the rules, one can’t get organs from a living person. Organs can only be harvested from a dead person. So he had been shifted to Hyderabad’s Yashoda Hospital where he breathed his last while waiting for a donor.

Launching a scathing attack, Das said, “Odisha govt turned a blind eye to Pintu Nanda. If it had intervened, Pintu would not have died an untimely death.”
“The State government is roping in artistes from outside and spending crores of rupees for them. But, the government is ignoring the Odia cine artistes,” Das rued.
“There is a hype that CM Naveen does not meet anyone. However, it is not true. Actors, sportspersons and other influential people are meeting the CM regularly and he is gifting t-shirts to them. But unfortunately, CM Naveen never spoke to the Odia artiste association.”
“Moreover, despite our pressing demands, the Odisha government did not create a welfare fund for us. If the welfare fund would have been in place, treatment expenses could have been met from the interest of the corpus. Surprisingly, there is no allocation or mention of the Odia cine industry in the Budget too,” the actor-turned-politician said.
Meanwhile, no comments have received from the government in this regard.
On Wednesday night, Ollywood actor Pintu Nanda passed away during treatment at a hospital in Hyderabad after a prolonged battle with liver cirrhosis.
Nanda was diagnosed with 'Acute On Chronic Liver Failure' and was advised to undergo liver transplantation (Cadaver).

His demise has left his fans and the entire Odia entertainment industry in shock. While Social media is flooded with condolence messages, veterans from the cine industry expressed grief at the passing of the actor.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took to his Twitter handle to express his grief over the death of actor Pintu Nanda and said, “Deeply shocked to hear about the demise of Odia film industry’s popular actor Pintu Nanda. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all cine lovers. I express my condolences to the bereaved family. May the departed soul rest in peace.”
Bharatiya Janata Party Vice President Baijayant Panda took to his Twitter handle to condole the death of actor Pintu Nanda. “Deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the untimely demise of Odisha’s popular actor Pintu Nanda. He will be remembered for ages for his contribution to the Odia film industry. His death is an irreparable loss to the Odia film industry. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. I pray that may his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti,” read the Tweet in Odia.
Chhattisgarh Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan took to his Twitter handle to mourn the death of Odia actor Pintu Nanda. In a series of Odia tweets, he said he was deeply shocked to hear about the untimely death of Pintu Nanda. The Governor has prayed to God to rest his soul in peace and expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
“The actor’s body will reach Bhubaneswar today evening. His last rites will most probably be performed tomorrow at Swargadwara in Puri,” said Sritam Das, General Secretary of Cine Artistes Association.
“At first we couldn’t believe the news. We were hopeful that he would return and entertain all of us again. He was one of the most talented actors. All I can say is we have lost a good actor,” said actress Usasi Mishra.
Expressing his grief, senior actor Ashrumochan Mohanty said, “I have no words to express my feelings. He was a talented actor. He was so talented that he could have led the next generation of actors.”
Cine Critic Surya Deo said, “I had a personal relationship with Pintu Nanda. With the death of Pintu, a void has been created in the Odia film industry. His realistic acting will no longer be seen on silver screen. We all are shocked.”
Pintu Nanda started his career through Doordarshan serial. He made his debut in Ollywood through film ‘Koili’ in 1996. Then there was no looking back for this versatile actor. Be it a comic character, or a villain, he delivered his best. He was awarded as the best comic actor for ‘Wrong Number’ film. He also did numerous albums with 'E Goura’ being the most famous one. He will be remembered for his films like ‘Ram Laxman, ‘To Akhi Mo Aaina’, ‘Wrong Number’, ‘Bahudibe Mo Jaga Balia’, ‘Oh My Love’, I Love You’, ‘Prema Rogi’ and ‘Jay Jagannath’.
Nanda was diagnosed with Acute On Chronic Liver Failure and was advised to undergo liver transplantation (Cadaver).
He was under treatment at a private hospital in New Delhi for some days but had to be flown to Hyderabad last week for further treatment. The cine actor was admitted to Hyderabad’s Yasoda Hospital due to unavailability of donors in New Delhi’s Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS).
A family member was supposed to donate liver to Pintu, but that did not work out due to mismatch of blood group and various other reasons. Before a donor could be arranged, Nanda breathed his last on Wednesday night at around 11:25pm.

However, it seems Odia cine industry has lost its charm in Dussehra this year, just like the previous two years owing to the pandemic situation. Notably, after a brief hiatus owing to the Covid situation, the theatre industry is gradually limping back to normalcy. And while the response to south movies is tremendously increasing the same zeal is missing among fans of Bollywood movies barring a few releases which have considerably done well.
Meanwhile, the regional film industry from Odisha is seen nowhere. Several movie lovers have expressed concerns that Ollywood may not revive unless the makers come up with something unique instead of the remake trend.
Earlier, theatre owners used to struggle to clinch an Odia movie during big festivals like New Year, Raja, and Dussehra. However, things have changed drastically in the last couple of years.
While there can be several reasons behind the shambolic situation in Ollywood, OTV has managed to get a first-hand sneak peek into the causes of some theatre owners.
“As of now, there are no Odia movies expected to be released during Dusshera. Indeed, this is shocking for the Odia cine industry meanwhile it is disheartening as Raja, Dussehra, and New Year are the occasions for regional movies. Audience throng theatres in large numbers to watch Odia movies, and at least three movies released every year. But this year, there are no regional movies. The quality of Odia movies is the first reason for which audience is not showing interest for those,” said Lingaraj Panda, owner of Maharaja Picture Palace, Bhubaneswar.
Panda further added, “We are interested to release Odia movies, but if the audience does not show up, how can we run our business? Under such circumstances, it is getting difficult for us to survive. We have to bear an expense of Rs 40000 for theatres’ maintenance. Apart from that, we have staff to pay on monthly basis. A show will not run with 10 to 15 movie watchers.”
“I request the producers and directors to come up with good content so that it will draw the audience to the theatres. It is distressing for all of us that the makers are coming up with remakes only,” he added.
On the other hand, Bharat Chandra Bhanjadeo, owner of Keshari Talkies in the capital city said, “Odia films actually are not running successfully for 4 to 5 years. Odia films are not able to stick for at least a week after their release. Even after a day or two, the interest of the audience drastically reduces. Now that a Hindi movie and a south movie has released, even if any Odia filmmaker or production house is planning to release any movie, it will be difficult for them to release as they may not get a theatre. ”
Further, he went on to add, “The craze for Odia movies has lessened and south movies are getting the preference. The main reason behind such a thing is, south movies have unique content. When Bollywood movies are failing to entice the audience unless something is unique, how will Odia flick draw the attention? Sriya talkies in Bhubaneswar was the epicentre for Odia movies. Now that it is closed, it can be expected that after it reopens, things might change.”
Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar Choudhury, owner of Rukmani theatre in Berhampur said, “Nowadays, the audience is content driven. If the content is not good, be it Hindi movies or south or English and even Odia, moviegoers will turn away from theatres. Theatres will opt to release movies that the audience is interested in. If the spectators don't watch we are forced to cancel several shows. Even though the number of shows is increased, many of them will be hit by the lack of audience. Earlier, the Odia movies were running over several months, but due to the lack of audience, after one or two shows, we are forced to cancel the remaining premieres. Similar is the case for Bollywood. People prefer good content. We are not even able to run Odia movies for a day. Earlier, we used to struggle a lot to release an Odia movie during the festivities. Even the producers failed to feed all houses as then the movies ran over 5 to 6 weeks while Hindi movies ran for one to two weeks. But now, Odia movies are not able to stick in theatres for even a week,” said Choudhury.
However, the manager of Sriya, Swati & Stutee talkies, Rabi Sahoo said, “Ollywood is always prepared. After the pandemic, several movies have released. However, the response of the audience has diminished. The liking of Odia movie lovers has inclined towards south movies and Hindi movies. Earlier, movies ran for over 100 days in theatres, but now, it is becoming difficult to run the movie successfully for a single day. We are getting forced to cancel the shows due to lack of audience.”
“It is becoming chaotic for us to run Odia movies without the audience as we have to bear maintenance expenses, pay the staff, repay loans, etc. We will certainly welcome Odia movies but we need a surety. Directors and producers should select stories that will be liked by the audience. They need to focus on Odia culture and make films instead of remakes,” he added.
Well, all such reactions clearly pitch the need for good content instead of remakes. Moreover, the need of the hour is to embrace the traditional culture of Odisha and to create unique projects that will impress the audience and revive the old relationship. Indeed, this would most likely help Ollywood and the Odia filmmakers to bounce back with a roar.
Eram, also known as the Rakta Tirtha (a place of pilgrimage tinged with the blood of the martyrs) is a glorious chapter in the Indian freedom movement. The Imperial police had opened fire on a gathering of freedom fighters in this place on September 28, 1942 when they were protesting against the foreign rule peacefully. As many as 29 people fell to the police bullets while 56 more were wounded in one of the worst ever mayhems perpetrated by the Colonial occupations. And the Sushant Mani directorial Rakta Tirtha is an attempt to bring back the chilling memories of massacre before the audience.
Rakta Tirtha, which is being produced by Tarang Plus, features Abhishek Giri, Cookies Swain, Manoj Patnaik, Pradeep Kumar Sahoo, Prithviraj Nayak, Prasanjeet Mahapatra and Anjana Dash in pivotal characters. Recently, trailer of the movie has been released and it has become the talk of the town.
Abhishek has come a long way since he won the Mr Global India pageant in 2016. His roles in the recently released movies Bidyarana and Atithi have earned kudos for him.
In a conversation with OTV, Abhishek who is the male protagonist of the movie said, “The story is based on Eram massacre which is a true incident. We just took the plot of what had happened at Eram ground on that fateful day. But the characters and sub-plots are purely fictional. The film shows how Odias had been ill-treated by the British people. In a true sense, we are inspired by the Eram incident but we have added fiction like love angel to make it more interesting. Besides, we have added some fictional characters. The audience will surely have goosebumps after watching it.”
Not divulging much about his character, Giri said, “I am playing the character of Shankar, a young rebel who is initially careless and not a good leader. When he is put behind the bars, he undergoes a makeover. After being jailed he becomes more rebellious and he takes leadership to free Odia people from the clutches of British people.”
Abhishek who is going to play the role of a freedom fighter for the first time had to read many books related to the freedom struggle and watch movies on the freedom movement to groom himself as a freedom fighter. “As I don’t belong to the pre-independence era, I needed to know the lifestyle of freedom fighters were leading. And for that, I read many books and watched movies like Lagan and periodic cinemas like Gandhi. While playing the character, what I felt that hunger for freedom is more than real hungriness”, he signed off.
As per the allegations made by the girl, Parija has been exploiting her sexually with a promise to cast her in his movie.
“I am a scheduled caste girl. Parija has captured my objectionable photographs and blackmailing me. He is forcing me to keep physical relationship with him for a year. My marriage has been fixed. However, Parija is threatening to kill me if I marry anybody. I pray for justice,” alleged the complainant.
In response, Parija refused to give any comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, senior film critic Dilip Halli termed the incident unfortunate.
“Akshaya Parija may be a well-known producer, but he was involved in such kinds of incidents earlier too. Only a few cases of exploitations come to the fore based on allegations by the victims,” said Halli.
“Many girls belonging to poor families cherish the ambition to act in movies. However, they are exploited while trying to fulfill their ambitions. These are unfortunate incidents prevailing in the industry,” he said.
Halli further alleged, “Parija has been indulging in these kinds of activities earlier and it came to the fore only after these allegations. It is a well-known fact that Parija often goes to Dubai with girls cherishing the ambition to become actresses where they are exploited. However, these incidents are not reported because of mutual consent,” he added.
He was suffering from liver related ailment for a long time and undergoing treatment. Patnaik had carved a niche for himself in Odia television and cine industries by writing brilliant screenplays and dialogues.
Following his death, condolences poured in from many artistes of Ollywood industry. Artistes also paid last visit to Patnaik at his residence.
Born on March 20, 1957, Patnaik had completed his post graduation and M.Phil from Sambalpur University. Despite being a bank employee by profession, he had profound interest towards literature, theatre and music.
His never-ending passion for literature made him pen many tele soaps and theatrical books. Besides, Patnaik was a certified artiste of Doordarshan and Akashvani in Cuttack and Sambalpur.
Apart from plays, movies like Sundargarh Ra Salman Khan, Premare Premare, Mu Eka Tumara, Ashok Samrat, Paribeni Kehi Alaga Kari, Parshuram, Matric Fail, Raja Jhia Sathe Heigala Bhaba, Something Something, Samay Kheluchhi Chaka Bhaunri, and Rakata Chinhichhi Nijara Kie brought him name and fame in the industry as a screenplay writer.
He had written, produced and directed 12 documentaries. His directional plays such as Palataka, Dhrutarashtra Ra Akhi, Atha Kantha ra Amarabati, Bhirnna Eka Smasan are all-time hit among the theatre-goers.
Veteran actor Pradyumna Lenka said, “We are really shattered to know the demise of Ranjit Patnaik. Ollywood keeps losing its legends one after another. Ranjit Patnaik was a good human being. He used to admire everyone. May God give strength to his family to bear the loss. His soul may rest in peace.”
Lyricist Nirmal Nayak said, “Entire Ollywood is in a state of shock following the demise of Ranjit Da. He had many feathers in his cap like screenplay writer, dialogue writer, screenplay writer and lyricist. He had spent his school and college career in Sambalpur. I grew up watching his plays like Baba Ultile and Bula Kukura ra Atma Kahani. He is a rare personality. His family may get patience to cope up with the loss.”
Drawing a comparison with the Bollywood where many actors and producers have been accused of consuming drugs and holding rave parties, the Kalinga Sena chief, Hemanta Rath said that Ollywood is no exception and people belonging to the business are involved in drug deals.
“A group in Odia cine industry is under the grips of narcotics. Exactly like the Bollywood, the actors and other members of the industry are consuming drugs in a big way,” Rath alleged.
Rath went on to invoke the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput that stoked a major controversy in the country and exposed the drug consumption of many A-list actors by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). He said, “We have already seen how Sushant Singh Rajput lost his mental balance by consuming drugs that ultimately led to his suicide. And more importantly, Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty has already made a statement on the potency of Odisha ganja.”
“If we look at the statement from Babushaan’s wife who alleged that her husband was deliberately fed narcotics by some people and his mother Aparajita Mohanty’s statement who had said that Babushaan has lost his mental balance, we can only hope that nobody in our industry takes the path Sushant Singh took in Mumbai,” Rath said.
“We demand the police to take the narcotics deals seriously and bring all the persons from peddlers to consumers under the purview of investigation,” he said.
It is pertinent to mention here that the ‘Chocolate Boy of Odia cinema’, Babushaan had returned to Odisha from Chennai on Wednesday. Babushaan has also knocked the doors of Orissa High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the case filed by his wife.
The actor's wife Trupti Satpathy had lodged a case under section 498 ‘A’ against him at Kharvel Nagar Police station while a case under IPC section 506 has been registered against his co-actor Prakruti Mishra.
However, after rocking star Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 minted over Rs 10 crore in Odisha, there were high hopes from Odia movies. Things were getting to become normal as the shooting of the movies resumed after the pandemic.
However, back-to-back deaths of veteran Odia actors added to the woes of the film industry. On the other hand, the personal controversial lives of superstars like Babushaan and Anubhav Mohanty have further jeopardized the future of the Odia industry.
Such incidents will be a major setback for the Odia film industry, suggest film critics.
The bad phase for Odia film industry started with the death of veteran actor Minaketan followed by the deaths of veteran actors Bijay Mohanty, Ajit Das, Mihir Das and Rai Mohan Parida. Recently, even popular Ollywood comedian and actor Salil also breathed his last in a major setback for the industry.
Then started the controversial marriage life of superstar Anubhav Mohanty. One of the most-sought actor of Ollywood, Anubhav has taken the Odia film industry to new heights since the release of his debut movie ‘I Love You’. He has acted in a dozen of movies and created a niche for himself in both Odia and Bengali movies.
However, his entry into politics and subsequent marital feud with his wife-actress Varsha Priyadarshini distanced him from the Odia industry. The actor seems to be slowly moving away from the industry.
Even as fans want to see him on the big screen, his controversial personal life affected the film industry.
Meanwhile, speculations are rife about the acting career of Odisha’s ‘Chocolate’ boy. Earlier, Babushaan released a video stating that he would not work with any heroine, if need be. This has come as a shocker for his fans and cine lovers.
In just 12 years of his acting career, he played a huge role in taking the Odia film industry to new heights. However, his decision amidst the recent controversy has become a matter of concern for Odia cine lovers.
Commenting on the issue, actor Manoj Mishra said, “Babushaan is a house full of talent. He is a national-level talent. I’m afraid, he is severely affected because of this entire saga. I’m worried, he might go into depression.”
“A talent will be wasted if he goes away from the industry,” he added.
Similarly, veteran actor Pradyumna Lenka said, “Babushaan is not just the son of veteran actors Uttam Mohanty and Aparajita. He is the son of Odia film industry. He is the future of Odia industry and his fans. He has the responsibility to take the Odia film industry into new heights. He should put aside his personal life and work for the upliftment o the industry.”
According to a complaint filed by Japani with Kharavel Nagar Police, Japani requested Sagar to sing a few bhajans for him. Sagar, on the other hand, had been rejecting Japani’s offer for the last five years. Frustrated over Japani’s repeated requests, one of Humane Sagar’s acquaintances rang singer Tapu to vent out his anger and said he would kill Japani when he comes to Cuttack.
Speaking to reporters, Tapu said, “I got a call from Humane Sagar’s associate and he shouted like anything taking Japani’s name. The caller also threatened to kill Japani if he finds him in Cuttack. He issued these threatenings just because Japani Bhai asked him to render his voice for bhajans which is unsuitable for a singer of Sagar’s repute.”
The complainant, Japani said, “I have approached Humane Sagar several times to sing Jagannath bhajans. For last five years I have been requesting him for the same but he never said yes to me. Mohammed Aziz, Sikandar Alam have sung Jagannath bhajans.“
“Babulu, owner of Sagar Sangam troupe for which Humane Sagar sang in the past, called my friend Tapu and threatened that they would kill me if they find me in Cuttack,” Japani alleged.
Humane Sagar was not available for comments on it.
At ‘OTV Foresight 2022’, which was held in Bhubaneswar on Friday, Qureshi said that regional films have the potential to break barriers of language and culture.
On being asked by audience if she would ever do an Odia movie, Huma revealed that she was not averse to acting in an Odia movie, provided the script is good.
“Why not? Send me a good script and I will do it,” she said. The Bollywood actress also revealed that she watches a number of regional films on recommendations by her friends.
“Recently I watched some Malayalam movies on the basis of recommendations. I am sure that you people are making some wonderful Odia films. I will really appreciate watching those movies and educate myself if you give me a list,” she said.
Huma further said, “The context of the movie matters to me. If I am watching a regional movie I would like to see the culture, music and lives of the people in the area, their hopes and sufferings,” she added.
Who can forget the rustic bearded Pathan hounding Munna aka Mahesh Deshmukh in the dinghy lanes of Dharavi in blockbuster 'Tezaab'. The lead antagonist, Lotiya Pathan, in the Anil Kapoor-Madhuri Dixit starrer 1988 film, was Kiran Kumar, son of veteran actor Jeevan (Omkar Nath Dhar).
Kiran, an FTII alumnus, had made his debut in Bollywood with ‘Do Boond Pani’ in 1971. The journey continues. The versatile actor is still the best in giving justice to all types of roles.
Kiran, who was in Cuttack on Sunday for a film shoot, expressed his desire to act in an Odia movie during a tete-a-tete with OTV reporter Prabhat Bisoi.
Here is the excerpt:
Prabhat Bisoi: You made your entry into Bollywood as a nayak (hero) and did some films as a hero as well. Afterwards, you were seen portraying khalnayak (villain) roles. Why was the transition?
Kiran Kumar: I did some 250-300 films playing nayak roles. And most of them worked too. Apart from playing khalnayak, I also did some character roles. I always make it a point to be part of the game, to be part of the film industry. Tomorrow, if I don’t have work in my hand, I would become a spot boy, or a light man. My purpose of the life is to be active in the film industry till my last breath. I am thankful to my audience who shower their love and affection on me and accept me in all the roles I have played. A khalnayak in a film is as important as a nayak. A khalnayak is not an ordinary person. He is a powerful person. All, including the hero, fear him till the climax. Then only he is beaten up by the hero. Khalnayak character is an indispensible part of a film. It is because of them, the heroes get prominence.
Prabhat Bisoi: Have you taken inspiration from your father?
Kiran Kumar: Every child’s inspiration is his father. I have learnt a lot from my father. My father has a world record to his name for playing ‘Narad Muni’ role in 61 films. There is none except him in the world to have played a single character in as many as 61 different films. I am very proud of my father and his achievements. My son Shaurya Kumar is also making a debut and you will soon see him on silver screen. I wish he should also come to Odisha to shoot a film and you take his interview.
Prabhat Bisoi: If you are asked to pick up the best character among all that you have played so far, which one will you pick?
Kiran Kumar: Lotiya Pathan. It was such a character that became synonymous with Kiran Kumar. People started referring me as Lotiya Pathan as it happened with Amjad Bhai (Gabbar Singh) and Amrish Uncle (Mogambo). Lotiya Pathan tag is still with me despite my best efforts to get rid of it.
Prabhat Bisoi: If you get an offer to work in Ollywood, will you accept it?
Kiran Kumar: Definitely, why not? But it depends on the kind of role. Look, in a film, it is not the language which plays an important role, but the character. What type of character you are playing in a film matters a lot. So if the offer is to portray a good character, I will definitely do it.
This shows why the Baripada-born actor was regarded as one of the colossuses who continue to have a magical charm on cine aficionados even after his untimely death on Tuesday.
Born at Bhanjapur in culturally-rich Baripada town of Mayurbhanj district on February 11, 1959, Mihir first graced the silver screen 42 years ago. He made his acting debut with the character of Shatrughna in Govind Tej’s ‘Ramayan’. Then he was a student of Ravenshaw College. Five years later, an offer to act in ‘School Master’ as a co-star came his way. And thereafter, his acting skills and easy mannerism made him a part of Odia cinema’s history. The industry got a versatile star in the form of Mihir Das, who remained unbeatable in his entire career, spanning for over four decades.
Synonymous with tragedy roles, Mihir was equally capable handling any kind of roles with élan. Be it in a hero’s role, romancing with his on screen pair in lush locations, a character portrayal, an antagonist or a comic role, Mihir left the audience mesmerized.
His parents-Prasanna Kumar Das and Sandaramani would have never imagined that their young lad would one day go onto become one of the most loveable and respectable actors of the Odia film industry.
Mihir was bitten by the acting bug even when he was a child. The opportunity of acting on stage came his way when he was just a Class-V student. He was first seen in play ‘Manikanchan’ where he portrayed landlord Pratap Keshari’s character.
His acting prowess left the audience glued to their seats throughout the play. Thereafter, he acted in several plays, giving justice to his roles.
After his debut in ‘Ramayan’, he acted in back to back films. However, it was ‘Pua Mora Bhola Shankara’ which earned him stardom.
Mihir left for his heavenly abode today. But his legacy will continue to live on in Ollywood, inspiring the new comers.
Mihir had many hits under his belt. The long list will be incomplete without the mention of films like ‘Laxmi Pratima’, ‘Bhai Hela Bhagari’, ‘Stree’, ‘Rakhi Bhijigala Akhi Luhare’, ‘Soubhagyabati’, ‘Suhaga Sindura’, ‘Baji’, ‘Krushna Kaberi’, ‘Nari Nuhen Tu Narayani’, ‘Rakhi Bandhili Mo Rakhiba Mana’, ‘Dhauli Express’, ‘Abhimanyu’, ‘Mun Tate Love Karuchhi’, ‘Sister Sridevi’, ‘Hero No-1’ and ‘Sundargarh Ra Salman Khan’.
His acting skill earned him recognition when he was picked up for the ‘Best Actor’ award, not for once but four times. These award winning films include ‘Bidhata’, ‘Pheriaa Mo Suna Bhauni’, ‘Pua Mora Bhola Shankara’ and ‘Bhija Matira Swarga’. For his stellar performance in ‘Pua Mora Bhola Shankara’, where he was seen without moustache, he received his first Odisha State Film Award for ‘Best Actor’.

The actor who has been suffering from kidney ailments for past few years is on ventilator support and the dialysis is going on at the hospital.

"The song ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ from Gabbar was my first performance and the song is my personal favorite. After that the judges realized my potential. Without prior information my family reached there to meet me and that was a very lucky moment for me. My family has been a constant support for me," said Shasank.
Shasank Sekhar has some melodious numbers in Ollywood to his name. He credits the people of Odisha for their continuous love and support and also expects to do well in the Hindi film industry.

When asked about his dream to sing in Hindi movies, he replied, "I received good response from the judges and other music directors. I always had a dream of going to Mumbai and ‘Rising Star’ has provided me that opportunity. I have a very good offer from Bollywood as well. This is going to be a very big surprise for all of you."

Till now ED has attached total properties worth Rs 83 lakh of the chit fund company.
The investigating agency is interrogating 15 persons in connection with the Star Consultancy chit fund case in which an alleged fraud to the tune of Rs 200 crore had taken place.
On the other hand, chief of chit fund company Seashore group, Prasant Dash was interrogated by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) today in Bhubaneswar. For the second consecutive day today, Dash appeared before the investigation agency.
Yesterday, CBI had grilled former IAS officer Sangram Keshari Ray for almost 3 hours in connection with the Seashore chit fund scam.
The investigating agency had summoned Ray and another bureaucrat Parag Gupta on Sunday.

Born in 1934 near Baripada, Goswami has over 1600 folk, devotional and modern songs to his credit.
Being associated with Odia music industry for over six decades, Goswami was a script writer, lyricist and music director. He is popular for evergreen songs like Mu Je Janena Kaha Bata, E Banara Chhayi and Phulei Rani Sajaphula.
Goswami has played the role of a lyricist for nearly 30 Odia movies, including Maa (1958) to Ranabhumi (1994).
The veteran singer was honoured with the Best Lyricist Award in 1996, Bhaktakabi Salbeg Award and Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 2000.
The entire cine industry was saddened by the demise of the lyricist. Odia Gitikabi Samaj general secretary Manoj Patnaik said, "An era of Odia Gitikabi came to an end today with the demise of Goswami. The journey which began in 1955 suddenly ended today. This is a great loss for the Odia music industry."
Singer Debasis Mohapatra said, "Many noted singers have lent their voice for Goswami's songs such as 'Sei Chuna Chuna Taraphule’ by Lata Mangeshkar, Tumaku Paruni Ta Bhuli by Mohd Rafi and 'Antare Kande Bahare Hanse' by Pranab Patnaik. His lyrics have always been unique and incomparable."
Asked about the reason behind his resignation, Mohanty mentioned that he was not actively involved in politics after the 2014 general elections.
He further stated that even though he did not attend any of the party’s programmes after the election, people attached his name with the party. On March 31, Mohanty had sent his resignation to OPCC Chief Prasad Harichandan.
“Congress is indeed a very big political party and I am just like a small creature in that ocean. Situation and circumstances were different when I joined the party. Neither the party will suffer any loss, nor will I get any profit after resigning. I don't want to be tagged as a member of the party anymore. Therefore I decided to resign.”
However, the actor made his intentions clear that he would not join any other party.
On the other hand, senior Congress leader Suresh Routray responded saying that Bijay Mohanty leaving Congress will not have any effect on the party.
The actor had joined the party at the Congress Bhawan in Bhubaneswar on February 2014 in presence of the then Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Jayadev Jena and Ranjib Biswal.
The entire nation, Bollywood, Ollywood and the television industry is saddened by the sudden demise of the actress.
