BJD MLA from G Udayagiri constituency, Saluga Pradhan on Tuesday elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. 

It is pertinent to mention here that the post of Deputy Speaker of Odisha Assembly has been lying vacant since the resignation of Rajani Kant Singh from the post earlier this month.

When asked whether BJD supremo and CM Naveen Patnaik will entrust him with some crucial responsibility in the organisation, Singh said that everything depends on the party chief.

Mishra further said, “Today I am unsafe both inside Assembly and outside. I am not taking the Odisha government’s help and have returned security. If anything happens to me or my family, then Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik will be responsible.”

Mishra further said that whenever there is a din, there is a provision for convening an all-party meeting. However, the Speaker of Odisha Assembly is not doing so, he said.

In his reaction, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jayanarayan Mishra on Friday alleged that the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is trying to threaten and he had tried this in the past as well

The all-party meeting was held at the Speaker’s chamber following which the session resumed. However, the pandemonium continued and the Speaker adjourned the House till 4 pm.

Mishra questioned, “What defines the CMO? Is a Secretary equivalent to the office?” The Leader of Opposition further alleged that there is absolutely no clarity over CM Naveen Patnaik’s statements. For the first time, a question of the LoP was omitted, he said.

According to Patnaik, this mammoth exercise was carried out in more than 190 locations in a period of six months. A total of 57, 442 petitions were collected and as of date, 43, 536 petitions have been resolved or disposed of.

As the adjournment motion was not accepted, the BJP members created ruckus. The BJD, on the other hand, protested by raising the issue of national highways. Following the pandemonium, the proceedings of the House was first adjourned till 11:30 am and later till 4 pm today.

Earlier, speculations were rife that the ruling BJD, which has a majority in the House, would field a woman candidate for the Speaker’s post. If elected, Pramila Mallik will be the first woman Speaker of Odisha Assembly.

The election for the post of Odisha Assembly Speaker which has been lying vacant since the resignation of Bikram Keshari Arukha on May 12, will be held on September 21.

Speaking to reporters while announcing his decision, Arukha said "'I have sent my resignation to the Deputy Speaker.

However, the decision seems to be limited to pen and paper only as most of the mandis across the State are yet to get CCTV surveillance, or the CCTVs installed at some handful mandis are lying defunct.
