By Sandeep Sahu

Like most controversies of our highly toxic times, this one too had its origins in social media. At the centre of the controversy was a video, first uploaded on YouTube and later shared on Facebook (both deleted now), showing the burning of ‘Madhu Barnabodha’, the grammar primer for Odia language. What lent the controversy traction was as much the fact of the burning as the use of a picture of Padmashri Haladhar Nag, the eminent Koshali poet.

All that the needless controversy has done is to reopen old wounds, deepen existing fault lines in our socio-cultural life and inflamed passions on both sides of the linguistic divide. If proponents of the Koshali state have used the occasion to vent out their anger against the people of coastal Odisha, the latter have found in it an opportunity to show the other side their ‘place’. What was particularly painful in the whole unsavoury episode was the contemptuous dismissal of the poetic credentials of Nag. One worthy said on Facebbok that such ‘poets’ are dime a dozen in the villages of Odisha and Nag got his Padmasri through publicity and political string-pulling! [If the bloodlust continues, one wonders if some would question the poetic credentials of Swabhaba Kabi Gangadhar Meher some day!!]

It is obvious that the shooting of the video – nearly a year old, I am told – and its sharing on social media was an act of deliberate mischief designed to evoke precisely the kind of reaction that we have seen since it was shared on Facebook. That it needs to be condemned unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms goes without saying. But in launching what amounts to a virtual language war, aren’t we playing into the hands of the mischief mongers?

Unfortunately, the row has refused to die down even after the well known folk poet condemned the burning in no uncertain terms and made it clear that he had no knowledge of it since he was not active on social media. In a sign of the cynical times we live in, his condemnation was dismissed as an ‘eyewash’, ‘afterthought’ and ‘insincere’ by those outraged by the burning of Barnabodha even after the culprit was arrested and forwarded to court based on a complaint lodged by the poet. The reason they have cited is the poet’s espousal of the Koshali cause in the past, who had met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to demand the formation of a Koshali Sahitya Akademy in the company of the person now arrested for spreading enmity between communities.

This writer, for one, finds no reason to be skeptical of the condemnation just because Nag champions the cause of Koshali. Nor is there any ground to disbelieve his assertion that he is miles away from social media and came to know about the misuse of his name and picture only after being told about it by some people. But large sections of our linguistic warriors would have none of it. For them, he is only trying to wriggle out after being caught on a sticky wicket. “What amazing acting!” exclaimed a particularly peeved young Odia writer.

Let us face it. There are historical reasons for the deep fissures between the people of coastal and western Odisha. There is no denying the unpalatable fact that there are sound political, social and cultural reasons for the grievances of ‘Sambalpurias’ against their counterparts in coastal Odisha. Some of our cultural icons haven’t helped by seeking, unwittingly though, to equate what essentially is coastal culture with the pan-Odisha culture and refusing to entertain the claims of Koshali or, for that matter, numerous other dialects spoken in the state – as a language. I am no linguist and hence in no position to comment on the merits and claims of Koshali as a ‘language’. But why should we be so upset about some people demanding language status for Koshali? I refuse to treat it as an act of ‘treason’ as some friends are doing. After all, ‘unity in diversity’ is the foundation on which the Indian nation stands, doesn’t it?

Having straddled both sides of the regional divide, this writer can vouch for the fact notwithstanding their deep-rooted grievances against what they believe is the ‘dominance’ of coastal Odisha, the vast majority of people in western Odisha are not particularly enamoured of the idea of a separate Koshal state. That is why the demand has never really got enough traction to be taken as a serious threat by our political leaders. People of western Odisha living outside the state proudly proclaim them as Odias.

The political integration of western and southern Odisha, which consisted primarily of numerous princely states before independence, was completed in 1947. But the cultural and emotional integration of these areas with the ‘mainland’ is a work in progress, which calls for empathy, understanding and compassion on both sides of the divide. Both sides must be constantly guard against attempts to deepen the fissures and harden attitudes. Anything that hinders comes in the way of the integration – like the burning of the Barnabodha – must be seen for what it is- an act of devilish mischief – and shunned by both sides.

Let us spread love, not hate!!

Bhubaneswar: Coming down heavily on Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Convener of BJP’s national membership drive and former Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said that even after ruling the State for 20 years, Patnaik still cannot speak the language of the Odia people. “Even a stone could have learnt to speak Odia in so many years, but Naveen could not,” said Chouhan who was in Odisha today to take part in saffron party’s membership drive.

Chouhan further stated that “Patnaik is not running the government in Odisha. I have heard that there is one Pandian babu, who takes all the decisions. If Odisha is a backward state afflicted with malnutrition, poverty and high infant mortality rate, first Congress and then Naveen Patnaik are responsible.”

No comments on Chouhan’s allegations could be obtained from the ruling-BJD and the Congress.

Addressing a gathering during BJP’s membership drive in Khurda, Chouhan asked the party workers to work hard to bring a change in the State.

He said that during the UPA rule, the Indian Prime Minister never got the respect & prestige on foreign soil that PM Modi commands. “When PM Narendra Modi visits abroad, not only he but 130 crore Indians get respect on the world stage,” Chouhan said.

Chouhan also paid tributes to former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and participated in a plantation programme in Khurda.

Bhubaneswar: Two days post the tragic Nepal bus accident, mortal remains of the two Odia pilgrims who died in the mishap late Monday night, reached Odisha on Thursday.

A pall of gloom descended on their villages today where their family members were awaiting their repatriation. The bodies of the two deceased- Charan Biswal (54) and Bijay Kumar Jena (52) who hailed from Malipada village of Khurda district and Jamuna village under Delang block in Puri, respectively, were taken to their respective villages for conduct of last rites.

According to reports, Jena and Biswal were among the 60 Indian pilgrims who had boarded the ill-fated Kathmandu-bound tourist bus that was rammed by a truck late on Monday night. The bus skidded off about 20 meters into a nearby forest after being hit by the speeding truck. While both Charan and Bijay died on the spot, 21 others sustained serious injuries in the mishap.

Three other Odia pilgrims- Sarbeswar Jena (55), Sheshadev Jena (53) and Karuna Karjuna Awasthi (63) who were stated to be in critical condition are currently undergoing treatment at Birjung- based Neuro hospital.

It is pertinent to mention here that soon after the mishap, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had written to External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar seeking his intervention and assistance regarding proper treatment of the victims and repatriation of the Odias injured and the mortal remains of the deceased.

Paralakhemundi: The century-old Bhakta Kabi Gopal Krushna Library in Paralakhemundi, which was established to preserve the Odia literary works, is itself on the path to dilapidation amid utter neglect and administrative apathy.

According to sources, the library is in a very bad shape with old books lying in tatters. The library was constructed with the objective of conserving literature works and also to serve as a museum for ancient books from India, Odisha and the local region.

“The library was a rich source of knowledge during our college and school days. Now, it lies in ruins,” an intellectual, Bichitrananda Debarta said.

Another intellectual Bibhuti Bhusan Behera said “I had spoken with the officials of the municipality about the library. They informed that a directive has been issued for construction of a new building for the library. However, there is delay in the completion of work due to lackadaisical attitude of the department officials.”

On the other hand, the Executive Officer of Paralakhemundi Municipality, Ashok Kumar Rout said that the tender for the construction was issued in November 2017 while work order was issued to the contractor in March this year.

“The construction of the new building for the library was disrupted for two months due to Cyclone Titli. The work is scheduled to be completed in the next 3 months,” Rout said.

Let us put the state government aside for a moment and stop doing a post-mortem of what it did or didn’t do, whether it did right or wrong, what it could have and couldn’t have done and so on. Here is a poser for every English reading Odia who happens to read this piece. Should we Odias be proud of the fact that we jailed Abhijit Iyer-Mitra (call him defence analyst, journalist, whatever) for six weeks or ashamed of it?

I, for one, am ashamed of it – and don’t mind going to jail for it! I am ashamed because I sincerely believe that we should be proud, not ashamed, about the fact that we are a tolerant species and have earned our well-deserved reputation over the millennia. We are the land of Lord Jagannath, the land of confluence; the land of love, compassion, forgiveness and every other finer attribute of the human race. Jingoism is not in our genes. It is, after all, the land that we have known to have transformed a ‘Chandashoka’ to ‘Dharmashoka’ (though some new age historians now dispute this popular Kalinga War theory).

While on the subject of the Kalinga War, I am reminded of what happened when the irrepressible Justice Markandeya Katju made – at the ‘farmaais’ of some of his fans on Facebook, as we explained later – some comments about we Odias that were as offensive, if not more, as anything that Abhijit has said about us. Remember how we ‘dealt’ with him? After dealing with him suitably on social media, we presented roses to him, elicited an apology from him and then laid the matter rest there for good in keeping with our rich liberal and tolerant tradition. That was when I was proud as an Odia. Not now.

Let me make it abundantly clear that as an Odia, I am as offended, hurt and angry as any other proud Odia over the comments made by Abhijit. And I refuse to buy this crap being sold by a few Delhi based liberals that what Abhijit said about Odisha and Odias was intended as some ‘joke’, ‘satire’ or ‘fun’. No Sir, it wasn’t funny at all! It had disdain for Odisha and everything Odia written all over it. Had an Odia said similar things about say, West Bengal or Tamil Nadu – the two states where Abhijit traces his parentage to – s/he would probably have been publicly lynched!

But I would still say there were (and still are) other civilized – and not so civilized – ways of ‘teaching him a lesson’ than putting him in jail, even if it was only for a day and not six long weeks. Giving him as good, may be even worse, as we got, for example. Odia Twitteratti have done and are doing it quite efficiently in the place where Abhijit reveled before heading for jail: Twitter. I am also proud of the fact that the Privileges Committee of the Assembly, under the leadership of the astute Narasingha Mishra, acted in the most mature way: by summoning him to the House, making him grovel and apologise and then sagely accepting his ‘unreserved and unqualified’ apology. I think we should have left the matter at that and not allowed him to become the cause célèbre of the Delhi liberals by jailing him. I have absolutely no doubt that a stern warning would have ensured that he would never take liberties with Odia sentiments again.

I am a strong votary of a ‘words for words’ approach and an equally strongly opponent of the ‘jail for words’ policy, not matter how offensive or hurtful they are. Even the honourable Supreme Court has ruled that ‘words’ would result in jail only when they incite, cause or threaten violence. And I don’t think any of it applies to what Abhijit has said about us.

Just to bring in the government for a moment here, have we paused to ponder over why the same government, which gave the distinct impression that it couldn’t care less how long Abhijit rotted in jail for his ‘sin’ till the previous day (how else does one interpret the 13-day delay in Abhijit’s ‘mercy petition’ reaching the state secretariat from the Jharpada jail?), suddenly acted completely against the run of play and decided to ‘pardon’ him on Tuesday? Here is my two penny. It realized that it was fast turning out to be a case of ‘diminishing returns’; that the tender Odias had just begun to feel a tinge of sympathy for the jailed culprit, especially after watching him being taken to the hospital; that any further prolongation of his incarceration could lead to charges of being unreasonably and unabashedly vindictive against it. And kudos to the state government for reading the pulse of the people right on this occasion.

But I must confess I am pained at the venom still being spewed against Abhijit on Twitter by fellow Odias. Most have toed the ‘serves him right’ line to justify his jailing while some have gone a step further to actually say that six weeks was way too short for his ‘sins’! For all one knows, there could even be some Odias who genuinely believe that he deserved to be hanged from the nearest lamp post for what he has done.

Sorry, I am not part of the crowd baying for Abhijit’s blood. And I am proud of it!

“I was asked to write about the Oriyas (Odias). What is there to write about these poor chaps?
Ever since they got a thrashing at the hands of Ashoka in the battle of Kalinga, they have been a dejected lot. Now all they have with them are a lot of pots (Patras), big pots (Mahapatras) and supposedly intelligent kings (Patnaiks). And of course they have Lord Jaggannath (sic), to whom they pray every day for revenge on the abominable Biharis.”

This is what retired Supreme Court judge Justice Markandeya Katju had said about Odisha, Odias and Lord Jagannath, their presiding deity, in October 2016. It was as offensive a comment as anything that Abhijit Iyer-Mitra has said on the same topics. As if ridiculing the state and its history and culture wasn’t bad enough, the learned judge even made fun of ‘Patras’ and ‘Mohapatras’. But all it took for Katju to put the controversy behind him was an apology of an apology. Here is what he said in the apology: “I said I had written my post in a lighter vein. However, if Odia people are feeling hurt, I apologise. I had no intention to hurt their feelings, and was only joking, just as I had joked about Biharis, Tamilians, etc.” No case was registered against him. No team of Odisha Police rushed to Delhi to arrest him. And no Privileges Committee of the Assembly summoned him.

A month and half later, comedian Pappu Pom Pom also got away with an apology and having ink thrown on his face for a comment on Lord Jagannath that most Odias found offensive. Puri police, which acted with remarkable alacrity in the Jay Panda/Iyer-Mitra cases, did not consider arresting him even though an FIR had been lodged against him at the Town police station by Jagannath Sena and a few other organisations.

Iyer-Mitra, however, enjoyed no such luck. His repeated apologies – first in the media, then in his communication to the Privileges Committee and finally in person before the Committee – did not stop police from going ahead with his arrest on Tuesday. Nor did it stop those outraged by his comments from gloating over his arrest, dubbing it ‘just desserts’.

What explains the different responses in the largely similar cases? Why did the law not ‘take its course’ in the Justice Katju and Papu cases, as it did in Iyer’s case? Was it because the ‘long arm’ of law was not long enough to book a retired Supreme Court judge? Why was Iyer’s apology not considered adequate amends not to proceed against him as was done in Katju’s case when both of them said they had made the comments in zest? And why was Papu’s apology acceptable, but not Iyer’s? Was it because he is an Odia while Iyer-Mitra is not?

The answer to all these questions, I dare say, lies in politics. It is easy to see that Iyer-Mitra inadvertently became collateral damage in the ruling BJD’s fight against Panda with his stupid tweets on various aspects of Odisha, its history and its culture. Quick to realise the sensitivities of the case, the BJD pounced on this heaven-sent opportunity to get the Assembly on its side. And in Papu’s case, the fact that he was a member of the ruling party ensured that there was no police action against him.

But what about Odias at large? Do they really believe Odia pride has now been ‘restored’ with the arrest of Iyer-Mitra? Does the whole episode enhance the glory of the land in the eyes of the rest of the country – or show us as vengeful, mean and petty minded? I, for one, would rather go with Utkal Bharat President Kharavela Swain, who has said – and got attacked for it – that the unqualified apology by Iyer-Mitra should have been adequate punishment for the transgressions of the Delhi based ‘defence analyst’.

In striking contrast to the state-wide outrage over la affaire Iyer-Mitra, there has been a deafening silence over far more offensive and abominable comments made in an editorial in leading Odia newspaper ‘Samaja’ last Sunday that condemns the #MeToo movement, terms those behind it as ‘baaraanganaa’ (prostitutes) and even taunts them to send ‘their younger blood relatives’ to the perpetrators to get favours since their old bodies don’t attract men anymore!

While the editorial “Me Too Mahamari” (The Me Too Epidemic), published under the ‘Benga Kahe’ Benguli Lo’ column in the Sunday edition of ‘Samaja’ on October 20, was shocking, what is even more shocking is the fact that it has largely gone unprotested even three days after it appeared save a few stray comments on social media. Mysteriously, women’s rights activists, who hit the streets at the slightest provocation, do not appear to have been outraged by the most sexist, regressive and offensive editorial that condemns one half of mankind. No women’s organisation has marched in rally, staged a demonstration in front of Gopabandhu Bhavan or bothered to file a complaint with the State Commission for Women’ in this regard. Nor has the Commission considered it a fit enough case to take suo moto notice of. The reasons for this absence of outrage can only be speculated on. But it does show us as hypocrites.

Selective outrage does no credit to Odisha.

Naveen Patnaik has certainly redefined politics in Odisha. When he entered the scene in April, 1997, he was like a breath of fresh air in the filthy, stinking cesspool that Odisha politics had been reduced to. In the two decades since then, the man who was a complete greenhorn then has metamorphosed into a consummate player of the political game and vanquished the stalwarts from all parties who straddled the scene before him to emerge as the unchallenged leader in the state. The list of political heavyweights put on the mat by Naveen included such seasoned politicians as JB Patnaik, Bijoy Mohapatra, Dillip Ray, Ramakrushna Patnaik, Nalinikanta Mohanty, Prafull Ghadai and now Damodar Rout.

He has perfected the art of winning elections through a mixture of personal charisma, deft management of public perception and sound electoral strategy. Nothing – absolutely nothing – has come in Naveen’s seemingly interminable honeymoon with the people that has already lasted over two decades: not corruption charges, not his refusal to speak Odia, not even the Modi magic that swayed the rest of the country in 2014. Almost inevitably, the question that is unfailingly asked whenever the issue of an ‘alternative’ comes up is; “Is there any leader in any party comparable to him?”

While no one except the incurable Naveen hater can question the wisdom of such an assessment given his unchallenged, unfettered reign for four consecutive terms, the fact remains that his leadership has never really been tested. Among current Indian political leaders who have been around for at least two decades, Naveen Patnaik is the only person who has never known what it is to be in the Opposition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is another leader who has never been in the Opposition. But the crucial difference between him and Naveen is the fact that the former’s party has been in Opposition for much longer than it has been in power since its formation. Among all political parties in the country, both national and state, the BJD remains the only party that has never warmed the Opposition benches. This is a rare phenomenon in a state where no government completed its full term in office till the late JB Patnaik broke the trend in the 1980s.

When he came into politics and was anointed the head of the newly formed BJD, his only political capital was the fact that he was Biju Patnaik’s son. Exasperated as they were with the corrupt and venal Congress government, the people of Odisha welcomed him with open arms. Since then, Naveen has consolidated his position in state politics to a point where he has become well nigh unbeatable with a combination of political guile, clever manipulation and an ability to surprise rivals.

Leadership however, is much more than excelling in the art of staying on in power. It is tested in adversity, in the ability to resurrect an organization after it has been down in the dumps and inspire followers and supporters to turn the tables on rivals. Nothing illustrates this better than the career graph of his own father who won some and lost quite a few. At one point, he lost all five Assembly seats and a Lok Sabha seat he contested simultaneously. His party Janata Dal was reduced to just 17 seats in the Assembly as JB Patnaik held sway between 1980 and 1989. But he still had it in him to stage a stunning comeback, winning an incredible 123 out of the 147 seats in the Assembly in 1990, a record that has not been equaled even by his infinitely more successful father. For that matter, even JB scores higher than Naveen on this score since he resurrected the Congress, which had been reduced to just 10 seats in 1990, to return to power in 1995 with 80 seats.

Now imagine the highly unlikely scenario of the BJD losing the next election and ask yourself if Naveen has the same spunk and the ability to inspire his cadres to stage a comeback. When asked this hypothetical question, the stock answer of most people, including his staunch supporters, is; “He will just pack his bags and return to Delhi”. They simply cannot see him playing the role of Opposition leader in the Assembly and bide his time to plan and stage a comeback. When you are the Chief Minister of the state, it is easy. You have everything going for you and everyone, including the media, eating out of your hands. You can do what you want, outsource your work to bureaucrats, read out statements prepared by them and still emerge as Administrator No. 1. An Opposition leader has no such luxuries. He has to go through the hard grind, be in constant touch with cadres and fight all kinds of adversities. And this precisely is what leadership is all about.

For all one knows, Naveen could still prove everyone wrong by becoming an effective Opposition leader in the event of losing power (which looks a distant possibility at the moment) – just as he has proved everyone wrong by becoming the longest serving Chief Minister of Odisha. But the jury will remain out till such a thing happens.

Who exactly is an Odia? What does one need to do – or, not do – to earn the title? What are the attributes that one must possess to be called a true blue Odia? Going by the opinion of a large number of people I have been following both on social media and in real life, the list of attributes of a quintessential must include the following. One must hate, despise or, at the very least, disparage all other languages. Whether one can write a sentence of correct Odia or not, one must not read or write in any language other than Odia. One must not wish Happy New Year, Merry Christmas or even Happy Birthday to friends, colleagues or acquaintance. And the most important of them all: one must not send his children to an English medium school. It is actually utter blasphemy and automatically disqualifies one as an Odia. [There are some who think spelling Odia as Oriya – and Odisha as Orissa – is the ultimate test of Odianess!]

Most ‘proud’ Odias have a problem with English. It is almost as if one cannot read, write and speak in English and still demand to be called an Odia. There are others who have no problems with English, but are up in arms over Hindi. Still others have a problem with Bengali. There are some who would not countenance even Sambalpuri/Koshali. It is all very well to take pride in the antiquity of our rich language, its long and glorious heritage and its classical status. But do we really need to embellish our love for our language/culture with hatred for other languages/cultures?

I am afraid this petty-mindedness is not going to take us Odias anywhere. Nor is it going to help the cause these self-appointed culture warriors believe they are upholding. They don’t realize this craven attitude will show Odias to the outside world as a parochial bunch, something that we clearly are not. In fact, we must take pride in the fact that we have, over the ages, welcomed anyone from anywhere and any language or culture with open arms. The Land of Jagannath is justifiably proud of its glorious all-welcoming, all-embracing and all-assimilating heritage. Let us not spoil the fair name of the state by raking up the kind of parochialism we accuse other linguistic communities of.

I am as proud an Odia as any of these (mostly) ‘cyber warriors’. Unlike many of them, I have fought some real life battles to assert my Odia identity whenever my state, language and culture have been mocked at. That’s precisely the reason I have lent my full support to the ongoing ‘Rajo Nuhen Raja’ campaign launched by Rudra Prasanna Rath. But I have never felt the need to hate any language to establish my Odia credentials. These dimwits are too consumed by intolerance to understand the simple truth that one does not have to be an ignoramus in all other languages to be counted as a ‘real’ Odia. Who will explain to them that it is possible to be a proud Odia and still acquire a degree of proficiency in English, Hindi or some other language.

In my book, one would fail the ‘Odia’ test only if s/he is unable and/or unwilling to read, write and speak Odia. If s/he can also pick up another language or two, well and good. If not, s/ he still remains as Odia as anyone else. But s/he loses the right to be called a ‘true’ Odia if s/he starts spewing venom against other languages. Instead of deriding other languages, the effort should be to learn as many languages as possible in a lifetime. That would give us a more rounded worldview. The ‘frog in the well’ syndrome would take us backward, not forward!

Raja the premier festival of Odisha, celebrating menstruation is still around a month to come this year, but the social media is abuzz with a campaign that sets to denounce the word Rajo itself. The campaign which has started just few days back has been a huge hit in social media as more and more people are coming from all walks of life to support it. Pleasingly enough, people are showing interest in posing with a placard which mentions #rajonuhanraja, and clicking pictures as well as posting it on their social media timeline as a gesture of participation.

Tampering with Odia language and giving advertisement in erroneous spelling is becoming regular in Odia newspapers and TV channels and this really amplifies during festive occasions. Even though people showed their resentment against this atrocity on Odia language, yet a collective amplified voice is never heard. But this time, the like-minded Odias have come forward to vent their anguish and thus internet is taken by storm with people posing, clicking and posting. Even Odias who are staying in distance places like Abu Dhabi, New Zealand, Australia and even from Spain have shared similar photos on their timeline. In Odisha, working professionals, school children, celebrities, common people have stood up with the placard and requested the people to write Raja as Raja not Rajo.

The campaign which started with a post of a protestor, posing before a hoarding which writes Raja as Rajo in Rupali Square in Bhubaneswar has come a long way in just a week. Around 500 people have shared the post linked with the campaign. More than 1000 likes and 400 comments on different posts speak volumes about the movement. Many have joined and many others have committed to join the campaign.

The campaign is dubbed to be the biggest online campaign in social media for Odia language and sets to transform the way we write Raja and Puja. With corporate houses erroneously writing the words, and media houses remaining silent on the issue as they get huge advertising revenue from these corporate houses, the netizens have resorted to online campaign this time. A campaign which has started with a lone post from an individual is becoming a people’s movement. National and international celebrities, columnists, people from media fraternity all have joined this movement and pledging their support to it. The campaign has also got support from Facebook groups such as ‘googly odisha’ and Facebook news service and many stalwarts are supporting the cause.

Quoting Debi Ray, the former president of Utkal University students’ union; the campaign is very symbolic as it is not against any business institutions or business houses; it is rather against the mindset which has accepted the word Rajo without even questioning it. “While we have been writing Raja since long, very recently a tendency has been observed to write it as Rajo. Who turned Raja to Rajo needs to be explored. We are requesting people to reject Rajo, the word itself,” said Ray.

Sabir Bux, who has been a flag bearer of this campaign, says it’s just not about a word. “It’s about a campaign which calls for collective response and collective participation. We should participate in this campaign so that nobody takes and tweaks our language the way they desire. We must all rise and deliver with maximum participation,” Sabir reiterated.

While many have supported the campaign, there are also a handful of people who are clueless about how the word will be pronounced if it’s not Rajo. If it is written as Raja, which means king in English it is most likely to create confusion. Hence, they have resorted to Rajo. However, the campaign supporters have their logic too.

“There are many English words with multiple meanings. For example words like ‘Book’ and ‘Key’ are used by Odias for different purposes. But we never get confused with the meaning when the context is represented. Similar logic can be used here” said one of the supporters.

Whatever may be the outcome of the battle, the debate is certainly going to gain traction in the cyber world at least until the event is celebrated in Odisha with gaiety this year.

Bhubaneswar: A day after Ollywood actor Usasi Misra met DGP RP Sharma here in connection with the assault on her by a group of people at Derang in Angul, police swung into action and arrested main accused Indramani Sahu and his son  Rudit Kumar Sahu this morning.

Two other persons identified as Dushmanta Sahu and Sudhanshu Shekhar Nayak were also arrested on charges of harbouring the criminals.

“Efforts are on to nab Ajit Kumar Sahu -the third accused named in the FIR,” said SP Angul Mitrabhanu Mohapatra

Usasi, in her complaint filed at Kaniha police station on April 23, had accused Sahu and his two sons of physical, verbal and sexual assault. Acting on the complaint, police had arrested Indramani’s driver Dusmanta Behera the same day.

Last evening, Usasi accompanied by some members of Cine Critics Association had met the DGP alleging delay on the part of police in arresting the accused. She had requested Sharma to expedite the investigation and arrest the culprits immediately.

It may be mentioned here that accused Sahu had also filed a counter FIR against Usasi at the Talcher SDJM court accusing her of manhandling him and issuing death threat.

On the fateful day, Usasi, who was on her way to perform in an Opera organised by Eastern Blue, was assaulted by a group of people.

Besides blaming police inefficiency, the actor had accused the Jatra management for failure in providing her security during the show. Meanwhile, the reason behind the fiasco is still unclear.

Angul: Indramani Sahu pulled my hair and thrashed me and amid the scuffle his sons pushed me on the ground… one of them was trying to rip my shirt off and other was trying to take my pants off, said Odia actor Usasi Misra during a presser today in Bhubaneswar while recounting the horror of the Sunday night when she was assaulted in public prior to a Jatra show at Derang in Angul.

Usasi further alleged that Indramani and his sons threatened to rape and shoot her.

Demanding justice, Usasi rued no arrests have been made even after three days and also blamed the Jatra management for the assault on her.

“I want to question the general public, artistes, the owner of the Jatra company whom I am working with – Soumya Ranjan Pattnaik and the people with whom I went to perform that why there was no security for me and my other associates despite a huge gathering of over 12,000 people,” Usasi said adding that she will not return to Jatra if she is not provided adequate security.

On the other hand, CEO of Eastern Media, Malay Mishra while responding to the actor’s demand for security said, “We will discuss with her under what terms and conditions she will like to continue to work with us. We will hold discussions & seek security; still, if she leaves, it’s up to her, but it will affect Jatra.”

On Sunday night, Usasi was allegedly assaulted by three persons including Indramani Sahu while she was at Derang in Angul district to perform in a Jatra show.

Later after the incident, the actress lodged a complaint at Kaniha police station accusing Indramani and his two sons of manhandling her and other crew members. In the complaint she also accused that the locals damaged her vehicle.

“She had lodged a complaint against three to four persons and one among them has been arrested and sent to judicial custody. Two teams under supervision of Pallahara SDPO are conducting raids at various places to nab the other accused,” said Angul SP, Mitrabhanu Mahapatra.

Bhubaneswar: Google on Monday said that its “Files Go” app is now available in the Odia language.

Files Go is a storage manager that helps users free up space on their phones, find files faster and shares them offline with others.

“Smartphone users with data storage capacity of as low as 4GB often struggle to keep on top of the storage space on their phones and are constantly having to choose between what to keep or delete,” Josh Woodword, Group Product Manager, Next Billion Users, Google, said in a statement.

“Since its launch, an average user in India is saving 1GB of space and has shared many files with others without using data,” Woodword added.

The app was launched with support for Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, Google is adding support for more Indian languages to help users who speak different languages.

Launched in December in 2017, the app works on all phones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher.

The app comes with an intelligent feature of automatically recognising unused apps, large files, duplicate files or low-resolution videos and memes detected using Google’s latest mobile vision technology and offers users personalised suggestions about which files to delete.

Bhubaneswar: The use of Odia as Official Language of the State is yet to be implemented despite the fact that it was approved by the Odisha Cabinet twice in the past.

The State Cabinet on March 14 had decided to amend the Odia Official Language Act 1954 and make provision for punishing government staff who will not abide by the rule on use of the language.

However, a bill regarding this is yet to be passed in the Odisha Assembly.

On December 26, 2017, the Cabinet had decided to for madatory use of Odia in signage boards by commercial and business units.

Besides, a decision was taken for formation of the Odia Bhasa Commission. But, the execution of the decision has remained in pen and paper.

Several organisations fighting for the Odia language have expressed anguish over the delay in passing the bill on use of Odia as the Official Language.

“It seems the Odisha government does not to have any interest to make Odia as the Official language. The draft bill has not been prepared yet. The State government is only hoodwinking people,” said Subas Patnaik, convener of the Odia Bhasa Andolana.

Expressing similar views Baishnab Parida, President of the Odisha Bhasha Suraksha Sammilani alleged that seriousness on part of the State government in implementing the law strictly is ‘missing’.

Government office buildings and business establishments are yet to have sign and display boards in Odia.

Labour Minister Sushant Singh on the other hand said the Bill for amendment to the Odisha Official Language Act , 1954 will be tabled in Assembly in second phase of the Budget Session.

Culture Minister Ashok Panda stated the government will take action if mandatory signage in Odia norm is not followed strictly.

“Second phase of the Budget session will get over on April 30 during which several bills will be passed. After the passage of the bill in the House, we will ensure that it is executed properly,” said the Labour Minister added.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha recently saw another singer from the State competing in a national-level reality show, making many sit up and take notice.

Shasank Sekhar from Bhubaneswar recently participated in singing reality show ‘Rising Star’ aired in Colors and finished in the ‘Top 8.’ Shasank, a popular singer of Ollywood enthralled the judges and the audience with his soulful singing during the reality show.

Speaking to odishatv.in, Shasank said, “I gained a lot of experience from ‘Rising Star.’ It is India’s only singing reality show where contestants perform live and voting by audiences is also done real time. Competition was really tough and there were a lot of talented singers. I felt proud to represent Odisha in the show.”

Shasank’s personal favorite among his performances in the live show was “Teri Meri Kahani’ from Hindi movie ‘Gabbar.’  He feels that the performance was instrumental in increasing his popularity in the show. Even he got a big surprise with his family going to meet him during the live show.

“The song ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ from Gabbar was my first performance and the song is my personal favorite. After that the judges realized my potential. Without prior information my family reached there to meet me and that was a very lucky moment for me. My family has been a constant support for me,” said Shasank.

Shasank Sekhar has some melodious numbers in Ollywood to his name. He credits the people of Odisha for their continuous love and support and also expects to do well in the Hindi film industry.

“As I have worked in many Odia movies before, many people knew me but there were many who never saw me but had heard my voice before. Participating in a national reality show increased my popularity,” said Shasank.

When asked about his dream to sing in Hindi movies, he replied, “I received good response from the judges and other music directors. I always had a dream of going to Mumbai and ‘Rising Star’ has provided me that opportunity. I have a very good offer from Bollywood as well. This is going to be a very big surprise for all of you.”

Bhubaneswar: Odia filmmaker Sisir Purushottam Mishra today slammed the Odisha government for ignoring him despite his significant contributions to the film industry for more than a decade and a half.

Mishra stated that he has lifelong dedicated himself for the development of Odia film industry, but his efforts were never recognised by the Odisha government.

Mishra has been named in the list of 2018 Padma Shri awardees in Arts/Cinema category from Maharashtra. However, the filmmaker criticised the Odisha government for not proposing his name.

“I have given my life for the Odia film industry. However, the State government has shown no interest to propose my name for the award. I should have been awarded with Padma Bhusan instead,” said Mishra.

“People who are aware about the industry consider me the ‘Dronacharya’ and a living legend of Odia cinema. But the state government never considered me worthy enough,” Mishra added.

Bhubaneswar: A day after the Odisha government decided to set up a Heritage Cabinet to promote Odia language, BJP today slammed the ruling party by saying that the decision is taken to hoodwink people of the State.

BJP’s Biswabhusan Harichandan targeted Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and said, “Those who do not have respect for the language, are making such big announcements.”

“Within 20 years he (Naveen) has not been able to learn Odia language and can’t speak in the language. Being a ruler he is unable to understand the language of his subjects. Since he does not understand the problems of people he has failed in doing justice to them,” Harichandan said.

He further stated the move has been made to cheat and fool people. “As the State government has failed on all fronts and is under attack from people, the ruling party is trying to divert attention,” he claimed.

On the other hand, Congress leader Ganeswar Behera welcomed the State government’s Heritage Cabinet decision adding that it has been delayed.

“If a law is needed, the State could have gone for an ordinance. Besides, I hope the decision does not fizzle out like those  taken earlier. I want a firm execution of the decision,” Behera added.

However, Baishnab Charan Parida, president of the Bhasa Surakhya Sammelani said, ” We wanted a language authority instead of a Commission, as decided by the State government. The government is fearful on implementation of Odia as official language because the CM and his officials cannot write in Odia.”

Refuting the charges, BJD leader Subash Singh said, “Naveen Patnaik has been different from his predecessors and brought a complete change in law.”

Odia will be taught as an optional subject from Class I at Godwin Public School in Bangalore. Joy of the non-resident Odias living in Bangalore knew no bounds after hearing the news.

Godwin Public School is the first English Medium school from South Indian to include Odia language in its course structure.

“I am very happy as nearly 90 percent of Odias are residing outside State and our mother tongue is slowy dying out. Therefore, I will thank Kalinga Foundation and the Principal of Godwin Public School for taking this step,” said a guardian Basanti Pradhan.

Godwin Public School Chairman Jagdish Kumar took the decision after being attracted to the language and culture of Odisha. He will be coming to Odisha on October 30 to meet School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra and Skill Development and Technical Education Minister Usha Devi.

“I was impressed by the art, culture and language of Odisha people. So I thought of implementing the language of Odia, the mother tongue for the students of Odisha background in my institution,” said Kumar.

“It will be my greatest pleasure to meet Badri Patra and Usha Devi and discuss with them,” he added.

Bhubaneswar: Dancer Anupam Nayak has been creating waves with his music videos of Zumba fitness sessions, ever since he left for USA as a Zumba trainer. But his latest venture has left Odias back home stunned. In a music video ‘Hailjaye America’ that has gone viral within a couple of days of release, Anupam and his wife Amrita are seen playing the lead couple.

While singer Sangram Mohanty’s voice adds a vibrant element to the song, Arun Mantri’s lyrics are not only fun but perfectly describe Odia sentiments of love. Music composer Asad Nizam is simply impressive.

“After a huge success of Jaiphula, I’m presenting “Halijaye America” music video!! I’m debuting in direction and acting with this music video; hope all will like it,” said Anupam in a Facebook post, unveiling the video.

The video is based on two Odias who met at Harbor Walk, Boston and fell in love.

While neither Anupam nor wife Amrita is a professional actor, both have done a commendable job. Interestingly, Anupam’s American friend Zac has captured the dance moves and expressions of the song perfectly to relate to Odia viewers. Another friend Sananda Sengupta helped them in the production.

Bhubaneswar: Eminent author and bureaucrat Hrusikesh Panda’s ninth novel ‘Samaste Ta Janithile’ was launched today at a function at the Lark Books office. Published by Friends Publishers of Cuttack, the novel is a work of fiction based on real life incidents.

Known for giving voice to the problems of the exploited forest dwellers who suffer displacement and violence for development projects since Independence, Panda’s new book reminds one of his book ‘Sunaput Ra Loke’ published three decades ago. While ‘Sunaput Ra Loke’ focused on issue of forest dwellers of undivided Koraput, this time Samaste Ta Janithile is situated in a different backdrop and highlights different issues but with the same vigour and empathy for the neglected people.

“I had tried to give the real picture of affairs in interiors in my previous books and in my new venture too, I have continued with the same efforts,” Panda said.

Present at the book launch were many known faces from the world of Odia literature, including poet Ramakant Rath and publisher Mahendra Mishra of Lark Books.

New Delhi: National Award winning filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda on Thursday said that his new film “Kadvi Hawa” is not aimed at scaring people or educating them with facts regarding various environmental issues. He wants to make the audience “conscious” about the remaining natural resources that humans are left with.

“Kadvi Hawa”, touted to be the first Bollywood film talking about environmental issues as a whole, received a Special Mention at the 64th National Film Awards earlier this year. It features Sanjay Mishra, Ranvir Shorey and Tillotama Shome in the lead.

The first look of the film was unveiled by UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Erik Solheim here at the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia.

“I wanted to make a film that would have stayed in people’s mind for a long time because our fight with environment has no end. The natural resources that we have consumed cannot come back to us,” Panda said.

“So, now we have limited things left like water, air, land… We have to use it with conscious mind. Right now we are sitting in the most polluted city (Delhi).

“Through cinema, we want to educate people about environment. I am not giving the people any solution with this film. All I want to tell is that let’s just be conscious about what we have, save it and do not damage it further,” he added.

Solheim said: “People feel the way we talk about the environment is too boring. An entertaining film like ‘Kadvi Hawa’ is a great medium to spread the message about climate change.”

The film stars Ranvir as a young bank loan recovery agent and Sanjay as a blind old farmer. The story revolves around these two ordinary people fighting for survival in two extreme weather conditions.

Sanjay said he feels blessed to have been chosen for this film.

“Losing things in life is bad, but losing environment is disastrous. There was a time when we used to wear sweater in October. Now we use air conditioners even in November and December. This is dangerous. What we will show to the upcoming generation? We need to think about this,” he added.

Panda said that the idea of making this film first came to his mind in 2005 when he shot his first documentary on climate change.

“In Odisha, there were seven villages on a coastal line. They were called ‘seven brothers’. But when I reached there, I only saw two of them. I got a shock when I saw two hand-pumps inside water. I heard from people between 60-70 age group that those hand-pumps were earlier located in the middle of the village,” he said.

“The Hon’ble PM spoke to me to inform about the candidature of Ram Nath Kovind as Presidential nominee. He sought the support of BJD in this regard. Bhubaneswar: Last week Odia astronomer Kailash Sahu alongwith a team of Astronomers of Space Telescope Science Institute, US that he was leading, successfully measured the mass of a star far beyond our galaxy. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today shared his success story on his social media profiles on Twitter and Facebook, making many Odias proud.

The CM threw light on Sahu’s growing years in Odisha. Sahu was born in ‘Bellagam village of Ganjam district, which did not even have electricity when he was a child.. He studied in the village school and his village saw electricity for the first time when he was 12 years old or in Class VII. From there he went to Berhampur University, IIT Kharagpur and prominent universities abroad, finally becoming a NASA leader in new space discovery,’ informed Naveen.

Sahu is known as Planet Hunter in the astronomy fraternity since he has discovered 16 new planets in 2006.

“Shri Sahu’s march is a testament to sheer determination and hard work. He also epitomises the abundance of talent and capabilities among Odias to excel in the most specialised areas,” wrote the CM.

This time Sahu and his team validated Einstein’s theory even while proving him wrong by calculating the mass of a white dwarf star, which the great scientist had said was impossible. The astronomers measure mass of a star named Stein 2051B and located 17 light years away, using the principles of Einstein’s century old theory of gravity bending light.
