A very severe cyclonic storm Yaas pounded the coastal districts in north Odisha when it hit the coast around 9 AM on Wednesday. Several low lying areas were inundated and trees uprooted amid the storm surge. Apprehensive of an extensive damage, the Odisha government had evacuated over six lakh people from low-lying and vulnerable areas of north coastal and adjoining districts, which has reportedly ensured zero casualty in the calamity. After the landfall process was complete, immediate road clearance was done by NDRF, ODRAF and police personnel for restoration of normalcy. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has started positioning rescue teams in Odisha ahead of impending cyclone ‘Yaas’, which is expected to make landfall somewhere between Paradip and Sagar Islands on May 26 as per the present prediction made by the India Meteorological Department (IMD)
Around 10 teams, including five units, of NDRF’s 10th battalion at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, who were deployed in Gujarat, landed in Odisha today. Similarly, five units of the third battalion at Mundali are also ready to mitigate any kind of eventualities during the possible cyclone.
