The incident was reported from Palasahi village under Parajang police limits in the district on Wednesday evening. The deceased has been identified as Bibhuti Sahu.
As per reports, Jagabandhu Sahu, who sells gupchup in the locality, was on his way back home after day's business when he was intercepted by Bibhuti at around 9 pm on Wednesday.
Bibhuti, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, asked Jagabandhu to serve him gupchup. However, Jagabandhu refused to do so unless he paid his previous dues.
Soon a heated argument broke out between the two. In a fit of rage, Jagabandhu stabbed Bibhuti with a knife used for cutting onions leading to his death.
After the incident, the accused fled the spot leaving his gupchup laden cycle on the road.
Upon being informed, Parajang police rushed to the spot and launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
It is suspected that the women were attacked by the armed miscreants when they tried to resist an attempt to rob the house. While one of the victims died on the spot, the injured woman is stated to be critical.
As per reports, the armed miscreants broke into the house of cloth trader Binod Jain in the village at around 1 pm on Saturday. It is suspected that the miscreants attacked Binod's wife Manjudevi Jain and his sister Kan Kumari Jain with sharp weapons after the duo resisted their attempts to loot the house.
While the miscreants hacked Manjudevi to death, Kan Kumari was grievously injured in the attack. She was later taken to a hospital in Bolangir for treatment.
"When I entered the house I found my wife lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She was already dead by then. I have no idea if she had been attacked while resisting a robbery. Police can through light on it," said a heartbroken Binod.
After receiving the complaint, teams of policemen along with the in-charges of four police stations rushed to the spot and launched a probe into the incident to trace the culprits and ascertain the real motive behind the murder and violent attack.
However, the police are yet to speak to the media over the incident.
The incident came on a day when people across western Odisha were busy celebrating Nuakhai festival. The daylight barbaric crime nevertheless turned the festive fervour gloomy in the region.
It is pertinent to mention here that this is not the first incident in the region. Though several violent crime incidents have occurred in the village and nearby areas in the recent past, the Bangomunda police are yet to trace the culprits in any of these cases.
Soon after the incident, Gumuri's family members lodged a complaint against her husband Biswajit Mukherjee at the police station and alleged that Biswajit has murdered his wife for not fulfilling his dowry demand.

Reportedly, Pushpanjali Barik's body was recovered on Monday noon while her husband Matia Barik's phone has remained switched off since then and he has been absconding, sources said.
As Matia has gone untraceable, the woman's family members lodged a police complaint against him alleging his involvement in the case. "My brother-in-law (Matia) always fought with my sister and even used to beat her. He used to doubt her and beat her every moment. It is only him who has killed my sister," alleged Manas Barik, Pushpanjali's brother.
On the other hand, Bolangir GRP has registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Reportedly, three bikes, two mausers and two daggers used in the crime were also seized from their possession.
Last week, two dreaded criminals allegedly involved in the murder case were arrested after a police encounter in Berhampur. The accused- Ganesh Nayak and Hrushi Patra, injured in the encounter were later admitted to hospital.
On May 22 a day before the 2019 poll results, unidentified miscreants had opened fire at the Congress candidate from Aska Manoj Jena near Lanjipalli in Berhampur. He was then admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries on May 24.
The district police subsequently launched a manhunt to nab the culprits and during the course of investigation, police identified involvement of five wanted criminals and a few more persons in the murder.
What is more disturbing is the fact that there has been a steep rise in the murders over family feuds, land disputes and for dowry. The murder increased by 7 percent in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. As per official sources, 43 murder cases were registered in Bhubaneswar and 29 cases in Cuttack in 2018.
"A person kills another person without having any second thought as he/she hates the other person the most. Everyone should learn to respect the other person," said Psychologist Pratap Rath.

On June 7, miscreants killed a truck owner identified as Niranjan Sahu at Janindapal in Jajpur district. On the same day, a man hacked his younger brother to death at Balianta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
The rise in the crime graph has certainly emerged as a major concern and a challenge for Odisha Police.
"There are several reasons for murders like family dispute, revenge and superstition which cannot be stopped. However, cops should be more vigilant and take action against the accused," said former DGP Bipin Bihari Mishra.
As per reports, the body was found by some villagers today morning in a pool of blood with its throat slit. After spotting the dead body, the villagers informed the local police.
While the reason behind this 'murder' is yet to be ascertained, forensic team has reportedly reached the spot for further investigation.

As per the data available with the government, the State was a shocked spectator to at least 8 rapes and 4 murders a day even though it remained for much of the year under the curbs of lockdown and its after impact.
Minister of State for Home Affairs in Odisha, Dibya Shankar Mishra, while replying to a question in the State Assembly, has informed that the State reported a whopping 2984 rapes in 2020 which means that 8 women fell prey to the scourge of rapists every day.
As compared to 2019, the rate of crimes against women has considerably increased in the State in 2020. Even the recently released NCRB report also corroborates the fact saying how Odisha has earned the grim milestone of coming second in the list of States with maximum harassment cases against women.
Mishra's shocking statement has spurred the opposition parties to action who took no time to target the government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
Chief Whip of the Opposition Party in the State Assembly, Mohan Majhi alleged that the law and order situation has now slipped from the control of the BJD government. The safety and security of people have become a major concern due to the inefficiency of the State government.
Senior Congress MLA Santosh Saluja also reiterated such claims and said that the government has failed to utilise the State Police while the Home Affairs is also not under its control.
However, government chief whip Pramila Mallick launched a counter attack against the Opposition. "They have a habit of creating an issue out of nothing so, their allegations are worthless. I urge them to discuss the matter with us," she said.
The Minister further informed that not only rapes, the State also witnessed 1470 murders this year which means 4 such cases a day. Most notably among the cases include the sensational Mahanga double murder, Nayagarh minor girl Pari’s murder case and others.
Meanwhile, cyber crimes have also witnessed a sharp spike this year. In Odisha, cyber crime related incidents surged by around 23.6 per cent between 2019 and 2020.
State Capital Bhubaneswar was probably the hardest hit due to the prowl of cyber criminals. In the space of just two months – January and February 2021, people lost over Rs 1 crore to cyber fraudsters. A total of Rs 2.5 crore has been duped by cyber criminals in the State during the same period.
