Monkeypox is zoonotic -- an infectious disease that has jumped from animals to humans -- followed by human-to-human spread with an average mortality of 3 to 6 per cent, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The manufacturers would develop the vaccine through public-private partnership, but no company has been awarded the tender yet
The United States has declared monkeypox a public health emergency. The declaration, which is initially effective for 90 days but can be renewed, came as nationwide cases topped 6,600 on Thursday.
The WHO has issued several advisory for people to reduce the transmission of the virus from suggesting gay men at risk to reduce sexual partners to people with symptoms to adopt social distancing. Small children, pregnant women are also are greater risk due to the disease.
