A recent incident in the capital city has evoked a sense of fear among the passengers, the women in particular.

A girl Yagyaseni Patro (name changed) who boarded a 'Mo Bus' in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday had no idea that the ride would turn nighmarish for her, so much so that she narrated it in a Twitter thread citing it as the creepiest encounter she has ever experienced. Here's what she wrote in the thread:
Today (Nov 1) I was travelling alone using the Mo Bus number 12 of the CRUT from Jaydev Vihar to The World square. An old and drunk man had also entered the bus. Though denied entry by the conductor at first, he was persistent and came in anyway. After I was given my ticket, when the old man was asked for his destination he said, "I will go where my gelhi (usually a word of affection for the young girls in the family) is going." When I looked at him because I could tell he was referring to me he said, "Kana anauchu kana" (why are you staring). And then he went on to keep rambling on about how I am like his natuni (granddaughter) and he will go where I go. I still cannot say for sure that he was referring to me. But when I felt uncomfortable and went and stood near the driver, the man came and stood right behind me and I kept on looking to make sure he doesn't touch me. He still kept rambling on. It was my fault that I did not say anything at this point, anxiety took over. I kept looking around to see if there's anyone who would help out if I spoke up. After this the conductor decided to intervene and told the man to get down at the next station, which was also where I was supposed to get down anyway. I again moved back to the end of the bus to get down from the other door and almost ran back home. I haven't felt this unsafe even while travelling in Delhi buses and that is saying something.

Requesting CM Naveen and CRUT to look into the matter, the girl demanded, "Safe public transport for women especially those travelling alone should be a top priority of the government. The male and female conductors both should also be sensitised to such issues."
CRUT immediately responded, "Ma'am, we sincerely regret the inconvenience caused. Regular counselling with special focus on gender sensitive passenger management is provided to the crew to ensure safe commute for all. In case of any concern while commuting in Mo Bus, please reach out to the Guide immediately."

What one ponders over now is whether the government is actually helping (women) passengers or rather ‘throwing them under the bus’ allegedly in absence of any concrete plan. Delhi, for example, engages Bus Marshals for safety of passengers. Before situation turns hostile here, does Odisha government also need to start thinking on the same lines? The collective voices would say, it is high time the government includes women-only transit options along with augmenting other safety initiatives.
It is pertinent to note that the Odisha government recently decided to make installation of panic button and vehicle location tracking (VLT) device mandatory in all commercial and passenger vehicles plying in the state, from March 31, 2023. These changes would not only ensure the safety and security of commuters but will also aid in emergencies and medical needs. As soon as passengers in distress press the emergency buttons near their seats, it will send an emergency signal to the command and control centre (likely to be set up in Bhubaneswar), post which the vehicle will be tracked and necessary assistance would be provided immediately.
As per reports, one girl student boarded a Mo Bus (Number 16) from Ramadevi College in Bhubaneswar while another got on the same bus from Vani Vihar square. They both had their scheduled arrival at Palasuni. But before they could reach their stop, they were looted of their mobile phones from their bags.
Later, they both lodged complaints at police station. However, the police are yet to make any arrests in the case.
It is pertinent to mention here that there has been a sudden spike in theft, pickpocket cases in the Mo Bus in Bhubaneswar. As Durga Puja has come closer, the public transport system is witnessing an unprecedented rush of commuters making them easy prey for pickpockets.
On Wednesday (yesterday), a cancer patient travelling in Mo Bus, from Baramunda to Cuttack was subjected to pickpocket during journey. A thief stole Rs 15,000 cash from his pocket meant for his cancer treatment. Though the police paid visit to the spot after complaint, the miscreant is yet to be nabbed.
Similarly, miscreants looted at least two mobile phones from the passengers of Mo Bus in Bhubaneswar last Friday. Though police took action after getting information, the looters could not be nabbed.
The incidents of pickpockets are on a rise in Bhubaneswar. Despite the police claiming to have kept things under control, the recent spike in pickpockets incidents in ‘Mo Bus’ has kept the commuters on toes.
The victim, Ananda Gouda, a native of Purushottampur in Ganjam arrived at Baramunda bus stand on Wednesday morning and boarded a ‘Mo Bus’ (19) for Cuttack to visit a cancer hospital for treatment.
However, as per the allegations, a pickpocket looted Rs 15,000 he was carrying in his pocket between Acharya Vihar and Vani Vihar square. Gouda immediately alerted the ‘Mo Bus’ guide who stopped the bus at Rasulgarh square and informed the police.
Speaking to OTV, Gouda said, “I am suffering from bone cancer. I have come here for my regular checkup and to purchase medicines for the next two months. Unfortunately, the miscreant took all my money and I am left with nothing.”
The guide of the bus said, “The old man said he lost his money in this bus. So I halted the bus and informed the police. They will probe the matter now.”
The police released the bus and asked the complainant to lodge an FIR at the police station. While some passengers of the same bus expressed displeasure at the Police’ indifference, the SPO of the Police van, Laxmidhar Mallick said, “There are many passengers who boarded and deboarded the bus between Acharya Vihar and Rasulgarh. There is no point in frisking all the passengers one by one. I released the bus after the IIC instructed me to tell the complainant to lodge a complaint at the police station.”
The incidents of pickpockets are on a rise in Bhubaneswar. Despite the police claiming to have kept things under control the recent spike in the pickpockets in ‘Mo Bus’ has kept the commuters on toes.
Miscreants had looted at least two mobile phones from the passengers of Mo Bus in Bhubaneswar last Friday. Though police took action after getting information, the looters could not be nabbed.
A frustrated passenger said, “This type of stealing is happening almost every day and now, people are fearing to board Mo Bus.
"There are CCTVs installed in the buses but such incidents continue to happen. The authorities concerned should take the matter seriously in the interest of the passengers."
Through the introduction of E-Rickshaws in Bhubaneswar, Mo E-Ride will provide first and last mile connectivity. Along with Zero Emission E-Ride, introduction of Zero Emission E-Buses which will ply under the brand name of Mo Bus will together promote Green Mobility and pave way for a sustainable future in Odisha Capital region.
Here are the important details you need to know:-
The bus services on the above mentioned routes have been hit owing to the ongoing tussle between the Mo Bus authorities and Konark and Nimapara Private Bus Owners’ Association.
Since both Konark and Kakatpur are famous tourist destinations, a large number of visitors come to these two spots on a regular basis. Most of them depend on bus services to reach these places. These tourists are now facing problems in reaching these places. They are seen arranging their own arrangements to reach their destinations.
The Konark and Nimapara Private Bus Owners’ Association has suspended the service on Konark-Bhubaneswar and Kakatpur-Bhubaneswar routes. The association has alleged the Mo Buses plying between Bhubaneswar and Konark are running without permit.
Besides putting their buses off the road, the association has also made the Mo Buses coming to Konark stop at Konark bus stand.
According to CRUT, the service will be exclusively for the match day and commuters have to pay Rs 40 as fare.
Good news for all the Cricket enthusiasts! CRUT will be providing Special Shuttle Service on 12th June, 2022 for the India - South Africa T20 match at Barabati Stadium. #hoponamobus and get ready to cheer for your team.#ShuttleService #BhubaneswarToCuttack#BarabatiStadium pic.twitter.com/sAcRTo2idw

The special buses will ply on two routes:
The special buses will depart from Master Canteen and Baramunda bus stand from 12 noon onwards.
Similarly, the buses will depart from Barabati Stadium towards Master Canteen and Baramunda bus stand after 11.30 pm onwards.
According to the notification, Mo Bus services will be available on the new routes from June 8.
These are the four new Mo Bus routes:
“Old buses have been refurbished and upgraded into Mo Bus standard that are equipped with modern technology and abide by safety norms. This new fleet of Mo Bus will be on the road to serve the public from 8 June, 2022”, CRUT MD Sanjay Kumar Singh said.
“The refurbished fleet will serve a larger number of commuters and operate on additional routes which will benefit the citizens of the capital region using our Mo Bus services,” Dipti Mahapatro, GM (P&A) CRUT said.
While Patnaik launched the Patia depot in person, the Bhagwanpur depot was inaugurated by him remotely over video conferencing.
As per reports, the Patia depot houses a workshop, parking space for 120 busses, a filling station and an advanced service station for the vehicles. While the Patia depot has come up on 18935 Square Metres area, the Bhagwanpur depot has an area of 22411 square meters. It has an automated cleaning system to wash busses after every trip.
Later, Patnaik went to the headquarters of the Odisha State Regional Transport Corporation (OSRTC) at AG square in Bhubaneswar and flagged off 110 sophisticated new busses.
The busses have been equipped with all necessary amenities for a pleasant experience of the commuters. From comfortable seats to CCTV cameras for safety and vehicle tracking system, these busses sport all the safety aspects mandated by the Central government.
These vehicles will ply on inter-state routes as well.
It is pertinent to mention here that the OSRTC currently has a fleet of 398 busses plying in 43 routes across 28 districts of Odisha connecting Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
General Manager of CRUT, Dipti Mohapatra said on Friday that the buses were decided to be sold off after their agreement period with the DTS (Dream Team Sahara) was over in 2017.
“The CRUT bought 125 buses in 2010 under the JNNURM programme to facilitate city bus service in Bhubaneswar and Puri. An agreement was signed with the DTS to operate them for seven years, till 2017. Later, the agreement was extended for another year, till 2018,” said Mohapatra.
Sources said after the extended agreement date was over in 2018, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) was given four buses for their ‘Toilet On Wheels’ programme and the rest of the buses (121) were decided to be sold off through auction.
“As both the life and licence to ply these buses was over, an inspection was carried out by the RTO which recommended scrapping those. We followed the necessary procedure and auctioned them through the Central Government scrap auction portal MSTC (Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited),” added Mohapatra.
“In fact we have auctioned them at a higher rate slab which was decided by the RTO after inspection,” she added.
In 2010, the Bhubaneswar-Puri Transport Services (BPTS) was created with a mandate to manage and operate the bus services on intra city as well as inter-city routes in Bhubaneswar and between Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack and Khordha.
Over the years BPTS evolved into Capital Region Urban Transport, more commonly known as CRUT, on May 4, 2018, with the vision to reorganize public transit services in the city. It is the primary agency providing public transit services within the Capital city of Bhubaneswar and in its neighboring cities of Cuttack and Puri.
Meanwhile, the CRUT has added three new routes to its fleet of busses.
Route Number 9: Acharya Vihar - Patia (Via Niladri Vihar)
Route Number 35: Bhubaneswar Railway Station - Jayadev Pitha
Route Number 71: Baramunda ISBT- Konark (Via Rasulgarh)
Mo Bus will operate in 3(Three) new routes from 1/9/2021 to make your commute more pleasant.

As more than a hundred 'Mo Bus' drivers staged dharna at the bus depot near Sum Hospital in Bhubaneswar, services in as many as 14 different routes were affected as buses did not ply on those routes. As per reports, the employees who are currently getting Rs 12,000 per month as salary, are demanding an increment of Rs 6000.
It is also being alleged that Maharashtra-based firm Travel Time, which is managing Mo Bus, has not paid the salaries to the staff during lockdown.
Further, the company has also allegedly deducted salary for Saturday and Sundays, on days when buses remained off-roads due to shutdown. Senior Congress leader Suresh Routray has supported the Mo Bus employees by joining them at the protest site.
Most importantly, it has managed to retain the public engagement in this COVID pandemic when everyone is forced to take refuge in their homes and desperate to get some refreshment, which the ‘Mo Bus’ Twitter handle promises of.
From trivia associated with bus stops in the Twin Cities to jumbled words and ‘Fill in the blanks’, the micro blogging account of Mo Bus provides a much needed respite to its followers from a constant buzz of COVID deaths and Coronavirus cases that they are faced with whenever they switch on the TV sets, or open the morning newspapers
Earlier on Friday, Mo Bus posted four pictures in its Twitter handle and asked the followers to associate them with the bus stops they symbolise. The users were quick to respond, to which the ‘MO Bus’ Twitter admin was prompt enough to answer back.

It is pertinent to mention here that the CRUT, headed by IPS Arun Bothra, has suspended its bus services in the wake of the COVID induced lockdown. However, bus service for incoming passengers is available from railway station to Cuttack and Khordha. Shuttle service is available from airport to railway station for the convenience of the flyers.
As per reports, during the cease-work agitation, hundreds of ‘Mo Bus’ staff did not allow buses to move out of the depot near SUM Hospital.
They alleged that during their recruitment the State government had promised a salary of Rs 13,000 per month, but the same was never paid to them. Though benefits of ESI and EPF were also promised, nothing has been done till date. Besides, there is no fixed date for payment of the salary, the agitators stated.
“We are observing the strike as the wage paid to us is very less in comparison to the amount which was promised to us. During the recruitment we were said that a salary of Rs 13,000 will be given to us. However, all of us are getting either Rs 7,000 or Rs 8,000 per month,” said an agitating employee.
Another staff said, “For the past two months, I have not received salary. This apart, we are not getting other benefits that we were promised at the time of joining.”
The ‘Mo Bus’ city bus service was launched last year in twin cities—Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. At present, as many as 95 ‘Mo Buses’ are running in the Capital city and 190 staff are engaged in the operation of the bus service.
In a major announcement, Bothra today said people will now be rewarded for reporting power theft. Though this had already made a buzz on social media, where Bothra is super active, the CB IG made an official declaration in this regard today.
“Power theft complainants will now get 10 per cent of the penalty amount, if electricity theft is detected. However the names of the informers will be kept secret,” said Bothra.
Elaborating about the development, he said, “We will soon launch a campaign to curb electricity theft. We also want to engage the SHGs in meter reading, bill collection and e-payment system and they will be provided with machines after a training.”
“People are active on Twitter and I have been receiving various complaints and am responding too. But I would request them to file complaint with CESU and not in my personal account. Because that’s a long-term solution considering the fact that I’ll not be associated with CESU for a lifetime. I, on behalf of CESU, assure everyone that in next 2-3 months, situation will improve and you will see the results,” said Bothra.
Recently, when one Rafikuddin lodged a complaint on Twitter regarding power theft in a betel shop in Salepur area, CESU officials swung into action and conducted a raid immediately. A case u/s 135 of Electricity Act was also registered against the concerned betel shop owner besides imposing a penalty of Rs 25,645 on him.
Bothra surprised the complainant stating, “You are entitled to a reward of 10% of penalty amount recovered. Do let me know where to send your cheque.”

He has also been one of the prompt officials to respond to complaints even in matters pertaining to CRUT where he handles additional charge as the Managing Director (MD).
Recently when a student requested him to change the timing of a Mo Bus to facilitate tuition classes, Bothra was quick to respond, ”It will be changed by 10 minutes. Within this week. You don’t need to walk to next bus stop. We want you to save time & use it for studies. Nothing is more important than supporting students & young people like you. It will be done.”
True to his promise, Mo Bus chart with rescheduled timing was published the very next day.
Hello @tushar0882

Priyadarshi said 32 platoons of police force, including 12 in Cuttack and 20 platoons in Bhubaneswar will be deployed to ensure strict compliance of the shutdown norms.
As many as 350 officers (100 officers in Cuttack, 150 in Bhubaneswar) will supervise the overall arrangements and compliance during the weekend shutdown which will come into effect after expiry of the overnight curfew restrictions at 5 am tomorrow.
“(To)night curfew restrictions will expire at 5 am on Saturday. The State government today has allotted one-hour relaxation (5 am to 6 am on Saturdays, Sundays) during the weekend shutdowns for physical/ fitness activities like morning walk, jogging and cycling,” said Priyadarshi.
The Twin City Police Commissioner also warned of stern action against those found violating the weekend shutdown restrictions.
There will be no obstruction in the movement of people engaged in emergency services and other exempted or permitted categories, he said.

No passes will be issued for those engaged in emergency services. Only the valid identity cards of the approved employees will be checked by the police personnel who will be deployed at various checkpoints.
Priyadarshi informed that as many as 63 check points including 25 points and Cuttack and 43 in Bhubaneswar have been set up for enforcing the shutdown movement regulations.
Speaking at the event on the success of Mo Bus, Managing Director of CRUT, Arun Bothra said, “Mo Bus has touched remarkable feat of one lakh ridership in less than one year of operation. On an average, Mo Bus has around 85000 footfall consistently every day. We need buses not metros in smaller cities. Metro should be made in big cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi only.”
Bothra further highlighted the consumer friendly initiatives like ‘Freedom Monthly Pass’, ‘Newspaper on Wheels’ and installation of maps and route numbers at Bus Queue Shelters (BQS) which have been appreciated by riders.
On the other hand, Surendra Kumar Bagde, General Manager, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) said, "All State transport undertakings should learn from CRUT. Odisha was heavily affected by Cyclone Fani, and in spite of the damages caused, CRUT has achieved the one lakh ridership."
CRUT rolled out its new buses under the brand name of 'Mo Bus' on November 6, 2018 to provide reliable and safe transportation connecting neighbourhoods. It's Bhubaneswar City Bus Modernisation Project is an example of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative towards reviving public transport system within the city limits. The project is a boost to people's confidence in the use of affordable intra city services offering potential to relieve congestion and timely mobility to commuters. The project also includes holistic planning in integrating public bicycle along with e-rickshaws that are to be introduced for last mile connectivity.
Mo Bus Vs No Bus
Reportedly, 30 town buses were procured by the Sundergarh Urban Transport Trust (SUTT) which is jointly headed by district administration and 'Sampark' after they formalised an agreement to run the city bus services from November 2, 2016.
While CRUT has a fleet of over 300 buses under the brand name of 'Mo Bus', in comparison, Rourkela has only 14 buses plying in different routes in the city and 16 more extending services to passengers travelling outside. Of these, two buses are now languishing at the bus depot, sources said.
It has been over three years since city buses were introduced, however, there is no addition to the fleet leading to discontentment among the city denizens. Even the drivers have complained about buses developing glitches frequently.
Rourkela Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Dr Yeddula Vijay said he has apprised the government about the demands of the public. "Earlier, when we raised the issue the government had assured that Rourkela under a new scheme would get electric buses. But due to lack of infrastructure, it was delayed. The Odisha government has said that electric buses would be introduced in Bhubaneswar first, on a pilot mode. Then it will be implemented in the steel city."
On the other hand, Sampark's Chief Managing Partner Prashant Swain says the ridership has increased and people are happy with the services. He also assured that the buses which are non-operational will soon be back on roads.
Smart City Rourkela Neglected
Recently, Sundergarh MP Jual Oram sought urgent intervention of the Centre to direct Odisha government to expedite development of the projects in Rourkela.
In a letter, Oram stated, "It is unfortunate that the funds allocated by the Central Government in 2015-16 and 2016-17 financial years have not been entirely spent in the development of the city. Out of Rs 37.06 crore available so far, only Rs 22.23 crore has been spent. That is also towards the establishment and the salaries of the officers and other staff."
"Unless the development activities are expedited, the grant of the Central Government and the long cherished desires of the inhabitants of Rourkela will not be fulfilled. As such, I demand that the Central Government intervenes in the matter and directs the State Government to expedite the development of the projects so that Rourkela becomes full-fledged and beautiful Smart City," mentioned Oram.
CRUT has decided to reduce fares of its AC buses up to 38% for next two months in view of the winter. The minimum AC bus fare has been reduced to Rs 5 for first two kms from Rs 8. Similarly, the maximum fare of AC bus service will now be Rs 70 against Rs 100.
CRUT General Manager Dipti Mahapatro informed over 91 % passengers of Mo Bus service will benefit from the rationalisation of the fares of in both AC and non-AC categories.
“There were constant requests to reduce AC bus fares and we have come up with this promotional winter offer. Tickets are now priced in multiples of Rs 5 to make it convenient for passengers,” said Mahapatro.
Mohapatro informed that for nearly 41 % passengers, the fares will come down after the rationalisation process. The fares will be same for 51 % passengers while the fare will go up marginally by Re 1 to Rs 2 for 9 % passengers.
At present, AC bus fares are 60%-140% higher than that of non-AC buses. With revision of the rates, the difference between AC and non-AC bus fares will come down to 30%.
Besides, the cost of monthly passes has also been revised. A passenger will now have to pay Rs 550 instead of Rs 600 for the monthly Bhubaneswar non-AC pass and Rs 750 instead of Rs 900 for AC pass. Similarly, Magic Pass for non-AC and AC will now cost Rs 1,100 and Rs 1,500 instead of Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,800, respectively.
The two-wheelers during the last decade have grown by a high of 157 per cent in the State. Even tractors, trailers & treckers (rural transport mode) have grown by 128 per cent. In contrast, buses grew by mere 49 per cent. But the taxis, fuelled by Uber & Ola, have posted 117 per cent growth.
Last fiscal year (2018-19), when private motorised vehicles like cars & 2-wheelers grew by around 13 per cent each, the taxis posted an 11 per cent spike; whereas buses grew by mere 8 per cent. These very numbers outline the changing dynamics in Odisha's transport arena.
A report released by the State Road Safety Council on Wednesday brings to glare how a paradigm shift has taken place in State's transport sector during the last decade.
Now, look where the motorised vehicles have posted a record. It's not the Capital city of Odisha.
Rather, the vehicle density is highest in a backward district like Koraput. The vehicle population is higher than the district population of 13.76 lakh.
In fact, the registered vehicles fleet in Koraput by March end 2019 stood at State highest of 14.93 lakh. As a result, the vehicle density of Koraput stood at 3,036 per KM.
Cuttack district, which has 9.07 lakh registered vehicles till March end 2019, followed Koraput with a density value of 1,509 and with a value of 784 per KM Sundargarh is behind Cuttack.
The least vehicle density in Odisha has been reported from Deogarh, which figured among the top-10 backward districts in Odisha. The vehicle density value for the district is estimated at 23.
The report has many startling facts. An analysis shows when a poor district like Malkangiri has a vehicle to population proportion of 40 per cent, in contrast, developed districts like Cuttack and Sundargarh have a proportion of 34 per cent and 28 per cent, respectively.
Private motorised transport has grown by leaps and bounds in all districts of Odisha - be they are developed infrastructurally or not.
However, the exception districts are backward districts like Gajapati, Deogarh, Boudh and coastal district Kendrapada, where the vehicle density is below 100. And the State government's public transport concept like 'Mo Bus' is fervently needed in these districts.
The decision to continue Mo Bus services with slashed AC bus fares has been taken to give riders a better experience. "We have gained significant ridership in the last two months. There has been overwhelming response after we reduced AC ticket fares and rationalised the overall fare structure," said Mahapatro.
In November, CRUT's ridership was around 84,000 and revenue around Rs 11.75 lakh. The consistent faith of commuters in Mo Bus has led to a rise in ridership as well as revenue in January with an average of 1 lakh passengers and Rs 12 lakh per day respectively,” she said.
Even though the revenue dropped by 1 per cent in December 2019, compared to November, a consistent growth of 5 per cent is seen till date compared to December.
The CRUT Manager however informed that there has been a 22 per cent boost in AC ridership in December. “While in November, 4.3 lakh people travelled in AC Mo Bus, 5.5 lakh footfall was recorded in the month of December. In January, the growth has been a consistent 9 per cent in AC Mo Bus ridership. As on January 27, 4.7 lakh people have travelled in AC Buses,
Mahapatro further said, “The move is aimed to encourage more commuters to use public transport services which would significantly reduce the number of vehicles on the road as well as bring down the pollution level which will contribute in decreasing carbon footprint in the Capital Region.”
At present, CRUT has a fleet of 200 buses, and this year the network will be expanded and 189 buses of which 50 would be electric, will be added to the fleet.
Replying to media queries on the sidelines of a two-day training and workshop on Sustainable Public Transport for Odisha, Housing and Urban Development Minister Pratap Jena said planning is underway to create a roadmap to give modern look to each and every bus stand in the State with special facilities like shopping mall, multiplexes in the prime and bigger ones.
Jena further informed that steps are being taken to develop the OSRTC bus service by running more number of such buses in various routes across the State especially in the untapped regions where people are still yet to get proper bus services.
During the occasion, Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) MD Arun Bothra informed that as many as 189 new Mo buses will be rolled out in the Twin Cities soon. Out of the total, 50 buses will be electric-operated and are they are likely to be flagged off by April 2020.
"Presently, the Mo Bus has a ridership of around 1.30 lakh but dependence on only 200 buses at present will soon decrease its performance so after government approval we have decided to double the intake capacity of the total buses in the Twin Cities and help in rising ridership. Route charts are also being finalized so that maximum number of passengers can get the benefit out of the introduction of new buses," said Bothra.
Asked if there are any proposals to expand the Mo Bus network to other parts of the State, Bothra said that if government decides to go ahead it will be a good step for everyone.
Around 120 officials of Mo Bus and OSRTC, consultants from abroad also participated during the capacity building programme.
Briefing media during the event, a consultant from Germany said, "CRUT has done excellent job in improving service quality, but a lot needs to be done as Bhubaneswar is growing too fast and the number of passengers commuting through public transport is still low. We want to help this organisation by executing new facilities, services, intelligent transport systems successfully implemented in other States of India and abroad."
Amid the COVID-19 lockdown, CRUT will ply the buses in as many as seven routes from Bhubaneswar to Cuttack and Khurda.
CRUT General Manager Dipti Mahapatra informed that non-AC buses will initially ply in seven routes of the Capital Region from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm, and the number of buses and routes will be increased over a period of time.
Mo Bus Service – Key Points to Note

On November 6, 2018, Mo Bus services were rolled out as a part of state government-owned Capital Region Urban Transport’s ‘City Bus Modernisation’ programme. Over these two years, Mo Bus has gained massive popularity in the capital city, Khordha, Cuttack and Puri districts as from 17000 ridership in the initial days, it jumped to over 1 lakh daily ridership in January 2020.
The buses stopped plying after a nation-wide lockdown was imposed in March. However, commuters are again showing their interest in public transport post resumption of services when most of the curbs were lifted. Currently, around 109 buses are operational in 17 different routes in Khordha, Cuttack, Konark, Pipili and Puri under the Mo Bus service.
On the occasion of 2nd anniversary of Mo Bus yesterday, Bothra expressed his gratitude to the commuters for their constant support. "In these two years, you all have showered love and supported us throughout. Mo Bus received widespread appreciation from across States in such a short span of time and has emerged as a brand. With a fleet of only 200 buses, such recognition was possible because of the people's love and support," he said.
Bothra also lay importance on the introduction of electric buses which will help reduce pollution levels. "In the next 3-4 months, noise-free and modern electric buses (e-buses) will ply in the twin city. The process for the same has begun and we have planned to induct 25 such buses to the existing fleet of Mo Bus to give a push to clean mobility in the public transport system," the CRUT MD stated.
On the 2nd anniversary of #MoBus we have a special gift for the commuters.

"The award to CRUT reflects the seriousness of the State government about Covid measures. The COVID-19 measures taken by the government are considered one of the best in the country. Earlier on September 1, 2020, the flagship city bus service of the Odisha govt, Mo Bus had already commenced plying, however, only on eight routes of Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri after the abolition of COVID-19 induced lockdown in the state.
The incident took place following an altercation between the passenger and conductor over some issues related to fare. The left leg of the passenger suffered critical injuries. He was admitted to Capital Hospital for treatment.
According to reports, the passenger boarded the bus from Shreya Talkies and paid money to the conductor to get a ticket. The conductor, however, issued him a receipt of a longer route-Master Canteen-Hanspal by keeping more amount than the actual fare which led to an altercation between them.
The conductor assured him to return the pending amount, but he didn’t do so.
“When I demanded my money back, he refused to pay saying that money can’t be refunded after issuance of receipt. I argued with him for a while and by the time, the bus passed my destination. I requested him to stop the vehicle so that I could get down safely,” the victim said.
Later, the driver slowed down the vehicle at Puri Canal road. “The employee pushed me out and closed the door immediately. I fell down and the bus ran over my leg,” he added.
Meanwhile, the CRUT (Capital Region Urban Transport) authorities, the managing body of the ‘Mo Bus’ services, initiated a probe into the incident. The bus employee has been kept off duty, a communication issued by CRUT stated.
