The Rohit Sharma-led side, which is now placed fifth in the league points table with four wins from 10 games, delivered a good show in both the batting and bowling departments at home against third-placed Kolkata, who have 10 points from the same number of games.
After putting up a challenging 181/4, Mumbai's disciplined bowling restricted Kolkata to 168/6 to keep themselves alive in the tournament. Mumbai will now need to win all their remaining four games if they want to be in the top four at the end of the league stage.
A 91-run opening partnership followed by Hardik Pandya's quickfire cameo in the middle order propelled Mumbai to post a challenging 181/4.
Put in to bat, the hosts were off to a decent start as openers Suryakumar Yadav (59 off 39 balls) and Evin Lewis (43 off 28 deliveries) took Mumbai past the 50-run mark in 5.2 overs.
Just when everything was going Mumbai's way, Andre Russell drew the first blood for Kolkata as he dismissed a well-settled Lewis in the 10th over.
While trying to go for a six, a mishit from Lewis landed safely in the hands of Chris Lynn at short third man.
With the addition of another 15 runs in Mumbai's scorecard, incoming batsman and skipper Rohit Sharma departed after giving an easy catch to Rinku Singh off a Sunil Narine delivery.
SuryaKumar then tried to build another partnership with Pandya however, after adding 21 runs, the opener too, became a victim of Russell in the 15th over with the Mumbai scorecard reading 127/3.
His fall saw Krunal Pandya (14 off 11 balls) joining his brother in the middle and the duo added 24 runs to take Mumbai past the 150-run mark.
Narine broke the partnership in the 17th over with the Mumbai score being 151/4.
Hardik then went for some big shots and played a quick 20-ball 35 run innings while JP Duminy chipped in with an unbeaten 13 runs to take Mumbai to a fighting total.
For Kolkata, Russell was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/12 while Narine too, bagged a couple of wickets conceding 35 runs.
Chasing the target, Kolkata started the proceedings quickly. However, they received double jolts on 28 runs as openers Chris Lynn (17 off 13 balls) and Shubman Gill (7 off 5) were back in the dugout in the third and fourth over respectively.
While Mitchell McClenaghan packed Lynn, Hardik Pandya dismissed Gill to put the visitors on the back foot.
Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana then put up a terrific fight, forging a 84-run partnership in the next 9.3 overs.
Mumbai's find of the tournament, spinner Mayank Markande finally provided much needed relief to his side as he sent back Uthappa in the 13th over.
Uthappa played a 35-ball 54 run knock, laced with six fours and three sixes.
Soon, Hardik landed another blow on Kolkata, sending Rana back to the dug out in the 14th over with Kolkata reeling at 115/4. Rana contributed with 31 runs, facing 27 balls.
Kolkata skipper Dinesh Karthik then played a fighting knock but lacked support from the other end as Andre Russell and Sunil Narine fell cheaply on nine and five runs respectively.
Karthik, who remained unbeaten on 36 off 26 balls, failed to take Kolkata beyond the target.
For Mumbai, Hardik picked up two wickets for 19 runs while McClenaghan, Bumrah, Krunal and Markande bagged a wicket each.
Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 181/4 (Suryakumar Yadav 59, Evin Lewis 43; Andre Russell 2/12) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 168/6 (Robin Uthappa 54, Dinesh Karthik 36 not out; Hardik Pandya 2/19)by 13 runs.
#KKR bowl out Mumbai Indians for 152 in match number five of IPL 2021 season, need 153 to win #IPL2021 #MIvsKKR

Things looked promising for the Mumbai franchise early on despite the loss of an early wicket and a less productive power-play stage.
Suryakumar Yadav (56 off 36 balls) decided to take on the KKR attack and began playing his shots after the KKR spinners, who bowled five of the six power-play overs, had curtailed MI.
Yadav, who hit three fours in Harbhajan Singh’s second over, hit two sixes and seven fours as he looked to take MI to a strong total.
However, his dismissal off the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan in the 11th over when MI were coasting at 86/1 triggered a collapse. MI soon lost Ishan Kishan who was dismissed by Pat Cummins in the 12th over and a few overs later, the defending champions saw the back of skipper Rohit Sharma who struggled to get going against spinners.
Rohit, who shared a 76-run second-wicket partnership with Yadav, made 43 off 32 balls.
The famed MI middle-and-lower order batting, which has plenty of hard-hitters, failed to get going. Soon after Rohit’s dismissal, MI lost the wickets of Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard in the space of one over. South African Marco Jansen’s dismissal left MI at 126/7 after 18 overs.
Medium-pace bowler Russell, who offers variations in his deliveries, hadn’t bowled till the 17th over. But in his first over, innings’ 18th, he got rid of Kieron Pollard (5) and Marco Jansen (0) and in his second over, innings’ last, he picked three wickets — Krunal Pandya (15), Jasprit Bumrah (0) and Rahul Chahar (8).
Brief scores: MI 152 all out (S Yadav 56, R Sharma 43, A Russell 5/15, P Cummins 2/24) vs KKR.
After Mumbai, who were put to bat, amassed a huge 195 for five wickets in 20 overs, their bowlers too stepped up and came all guns blazing to restrict their opponents to 146/9 in the allotted 20 overs.
Chasing the massive 196-run target, Kolkata lost both their openers -- Shubhman Gill (7) and Sunil Narine (9) -- within the first five overs with their scorecard reading 25/2. While Trent Boult dismissed Gill, James Pattinson accounted for Narine.
KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik (30) and NitishRana (24), however, scored at a brisk pace, taking their side past the 50-run mark in the next 2.4 overs.
The partnership didn't last too long as Rahul Chahar trapped Karthik before the wicket in the 11th over. Just when KKR managed to add another six runs, Keiron Pollard sent Rana back to reduce the opponents to 77/4 in 11.4 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah, who conceded 43 runs in four overs against Chennai Super Kings, made a magnificent comeback and jolted KKR twice in an over. Both Eoin Morgan (16) Andre Russell (11) became the victim of Bumrah in the 16th over.
Boult struck again in the 17th over, this time to send back Nikhil Naik (1) as KKR reeled at 103/7. Pat Cummins, who had a horrible time with the ball earlier in the innings, showed his potential with the bat as he played a cameo of 12-ball 33 before being consumed by James Pattinson in the 19th over. Cummins innings somehow reduced the deficit but wasn't enough to help KKR cross the line as the two-time IPL champions fell 49 short of the target.
For Mumbai, Bumrah, Pattinson, Rahul Chahar and Boult picked couple of wickets each.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians' skipper Rohit led from the front with his explosive 54-ball 80 as his side posted a challenging 195/5 in the allotted overs. Rohit's blitzkrieg was decorated with three boundaries and six hits into the stands.
Apart from Rohit's innings, it was some lacklustre bowling and fielding from Kolkata Knight Riders that helped Mumbai reach a good total.
After putting MI into bat, KKR managed to contain MI opener Quinton de Kock (1) early. However, their joy didn't last long as the next batsman Suryakumar Yadav, along with Rohit, repaired the early damage quite comfortably.
The duo forged a 90-run partnership for the second wicket, before Yadav while trying to steal a single fell short of the crease.
Saurabh Tiwary then provided ideal support to his skipper as the pair then stitched together a 49-run partnership before the former became a victim of Sunil Narine in the 16th over with Mumbai's scorecard reading 147/3.
Rohit, however, continued the destruction with his bat and received good support from Hardik Pandya (18). The MI skipper and Hardik while trying to accelerate the run rate fell to Shivam Mavi and Andre Russell towards the business end of the innings before Keiron Pollard scored 13 runs from the final over to help their side reach a good total.
While Mavi picked two wickets, Russell and Narine bagged one each. Pat Cummins, the most expensive purchase at the player auction, had a disappointing outing as he leaked 49 runs from his three overs and remained wicketless.
Brief scores: Mumbai Indian 195/5 (Rohit Sharma 80, Suryakumar Yadav 47; Shivam Mavi 2/32) beat KKR 146/9 (Pat Cummins 33, Dinesh Karthik 30; James Pattinson 2/25) by 49 runs.
