Bhubaneswar: In a prompt action by SCB authorities, a three members committee has been formed to probe the alleged mismanagement in the corona ward of the hospital in Cuttack, Friday.

The committee has been asked to submit a report on the matter on Saturday. The three-member body comprises additional superintendent, manager and emergency authority doctor Bhubanananda Moharana.

“We are under pressure as the numbers of the patients are increasing a lot,” stated Moharana.

President of the District Congress Committee Manas Choudhury had shared a video in social media on Thursday purportedly showing how bodies are lying scattered all over the premises of hospital corona ward.

“This medical, believed to be the ray of hope for many, is overcrowded, dirty and bodies of people are strewn across the floor. Bed-less people have settled on the floors and the basins look vomit-inducing. It’s high time the State government takes some responsibility and treats patients with attention and dignity,” the Congress leader said.

Wherever such mismanagement will be seen, Congress will record and show it to the general public to highlight how a crisis is being ‘mishandled’ by the government, he further added.

Puri: A youth suffered critical injuries after four bike-borne miscreants hurled bombs at him near Baselisahi area of Puri district today. The injured, Sibaram Patra is now undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital.

According to Patra, four were involved in the attack while he could identity only one of them.

“The accused Dama came with four of his associates on two motorcycles and hurled bombs at me over past enmity. They had also attempted to kill me in the past,” said Patra.

After hurling bombs, the miscreants immediately left the spot, informed police adding that one of the miscreants also suffered injuries during the attack. An investigation is currently underway to nab all the accused.

The incident has raised questions at the security arrangements done in the holy town ahead of Deva Snana Purnima scheduled to be held on June 17 and Rath Yatra on July 4.

On May 26, at least five persons were injured after bombs were hurled following a clash between two groups at Bhatapada village in Brahmagiri area in the district.

New York: Regular use of a common type of medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen significantly improves the survival rate for a third or more patients with head and neck cancer, a new study has found.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, for at least six months provided “markedly prolonged” improved five-year survival rate from 25 per cent to 78 per cent for patients whose cancer contained a specific altered gene, known as PIK3CA, researchers from the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) reported.

The survival rate for patients whose gene was not altered in their tumour was unaffected by NSAID use.

“Our results suggest that the use of NSAIDs could significantly improve outcomes for not only head and neck cancer patients, but also patients with other cancers that contained the PIK3CA mutation,” said UCSF professor Jennifer R. Grandis.

“The magnitude of the apparent advantage is strong, and could potentially have a positive impact on human health,” Grandis said.

Within head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, PIK3CA is the most commonly altered oncogene, with 34 per cent of all tumours carrying mutations that activate the PIK3CA gene.

In head and neck cancer associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV), PIK3CA is mutated in more than half of tumours.

In the research, published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, 266 patients from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center whose tumours were surgically removed were investigated. The majority (84 per cent) smoked and 67 per cent received post-surgery chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Median overall survival was 66 months.

Altogether, 75 tumours (28 per cent) in the study had an activating alteration of the PIK3CA gene.

Among the patients who regularly used NSAIDs, 93 per cent used aspirin as a component of the NSAID regiment, and 73 per cent took aspirin exclusively. Most of the regular users started on the aspirin therapy following their head and neck cancer diagnosis.

Through analysis of both cell line and mouse studies, the researchers speculated that NSAIDs likely blocked tumour growth by reducing the production of an inflammatory molecule called prostaglandin E2.

The researchers pointed out that their results need to be corroborated in a prospective trial.

“NSAID use likely confers a statistically and clinically significant advantage in overall survival in PIK3CA-altered head and neck cancer through direct interaction between the PI3K and COX pathways,” said Grandis.

New Delhi: Seventy-four per cent of respondents in a recent set of polls said that corruption related to procurement/supplies is a common phenomenon at government hospitals while just 2 per cent said that was not the case. Twenty-four per cent were not sure about this.

Citizens’ engagement platform LocalCircle conducted the surveys in the wake of a large number of children dying in government hospital’s due to malfunctioning of equipment and unavailability of oxygen. The polls received more than 32,000 votes.

In the second poll, 59 per cent citizens agreed that theft and sale of supplies and medicines was a common phenomenon at government hospitals in their city. Three per cent did not agree with this while 38 per cent were unsure and didn’t express an opinion.

“There have been many cases where the staff of government hospitals has been caught trying to sell medicines meant for the patients, to outsiders at a discounted price. Even the supplementary things like syringes and bandages are sold to outsiders through the back door. Most suppliers have to pay bribes to supply equipment/consumables in Govt hospitals from qualification to orders to getting their bills paid,” LocalCircles said in a statement.

The third poll asked people the primary reason why they go to government hospitals. A mere 15 per cent said they trust them more than private hospitals and 16 per cent said they go there due to their low costs. Surprisingly, a large 65 per cent said they do not go to government hospitals at all and four per cent said government hospitals are the only option in their city.

“After corruption was identified as one of the root cause of poor quality of services in state government hospitals, the last poll asked consumers how can corruption be drastically reduced at state government hospitals in India,” the statement added.

Forty-one per cent said corruption can be reduced by strengthening state anti-corruption units, 18 per cent said that it could be done by privatising these hospitals and 29 per cent said making electronic procurement mandatory could help in reducing corruption.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission has called for a report from the Odisha government over the death of woman and her son due to lack of medical facilities at a health centre in Cuttack district.

According to the commission, which took cognizance of the issue through media reports, Bharat Nayak of Cuttak district lost his ailing wife and his 24-year-old son in quick succession — on May 10, and May 11, 2016, respectively.

His son could not be shifted in time to a Government Hospital with proper facilities in Cuttack, as he had no money to afford treatment at a private hospital.

The commission observed that Bapi, the son of Bharat Nayak, was suffering from spinal disorder.

His condition continued to deteriorate as the health centre was not equipped to treat him. His father took him to Cuttack but returned as he could not arrange more than Rs one lakh required for the treatment.

“Even as the body of his wife, who died due to heart attack, was lying at his home, Bharat was looking for divine intervention to save his son,” said the commission.

The man took his son to a nearby temple, even as his wife’s body was on a funeral pyre with the assistance of Rs 2,000 from the State Government.

“On hearing this, some local people persuaded Bharat to take his son back to the Health Centre where he eventually died, even as Rs 3,000 was arranged through Red Cross to shift him to Cuttack for treatment,” said the commission.

The Commission observed that the incident raises serious concerns about the prevailing healthcare facilities in Odisha.

“The commission has issued a notice to the Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Odisha calling for a report on the condition of the health services in the State and about the non-availability of the ambulance services at Athagarh Health Centre,” said the statement from NHRC.

London: At a time when the use of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) in clinical practice has gradually reduced, a new article contends that there is ‘no clinically relevant evidence’ for the withdrawal of nitrous oxide.

The issue whether laughing gas (nitrous oxide) should be banned from the operating room figured prominently in a debate at this year’s Euroanaesthesia meeting in Berlin.

“Whereas 30 years ago, nearly every general anaesthesia procedure was performed with nitrous oxide as an adjuvant, a steady decline of its use over the last 15 years has been observed. There are several reasons, which caused the reduction of the usage of nitrous oxide,” said Professor Rolf Rossaint from the University Hospital Aachen, Germany, who is in favour of nitrous oxide ban.

Countering his views, Professor Daniel Sessler, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, US, in his talk on “nitrous oxide is an effective and safe anaesthetic” put forward arguments against a ban.

“There is no compelling evidence that nitrous oxide causes important clinical complications. In fact, large randomised trials consistently show that nitrous oxide does not promote complications,” Sessler said.

“Nitrous oxide is inexpensive and has favourable kinetics; it does not increase the risk of surgical site infection, post-operative myocardial infarction, or cancer recurrence. And the two complications resulting from nitrous oxide administration, nausea and bowel distension, are minor and no worse than complications caused by alternative anaesthetics,” Sessler added.

“There is no clinically relevant evidence for the withdrawal of nitrous oxide from the armamentarium of anaesthesia practice or procedural sedation,” said the article published in the European Journal of Anaesthesiology.

The debate coincided with the article published in the European Journal of Anaesthesiology.
