Hundreds of engineering students launched a sit-in protest alleging that the government is doing little to create scope for employment.
Shouting slogans against the government, they set fire to their diploma certificates. “When we have no jobs, what is the use of having diploma certificates,” they fumed.
A lady engineering student shouted, “We have been protesting for the last one and a half years for jobs. The government is playing with our lives, as it is doing nothing for our employment. What is the use of keeping certificates with us? The certificates are of no value to us now.”
Another student said, “We have come to the streets several times. Our demands were not fulfilled. Our certificates have no value when we have no jobs. We decided to burn them down. This government has no responsibility.”
No comments were received from the concerned authorities.
As per reports, local youths have been demanding jobs, rehabilitation, and relocation of their families from the coal-bearing area. They said the MCL had notified the village for acquisition as part of its expansion project 14 years ago.
Agitating youths and villagers alleged that MCL is not relocating over 400 families of Gopal Prasad village even 14 years after its notification. No steps are being taken for their settlement and jobs for youths, they complained.
Prashant Behera, one of the agitators said, “The MCL authorities have been giving us assurances time and again on jobs and relocation. But nothing is being done. In 2010, the MCL authorities visited three villages including Gopal Prasad, Malibandh, and Kusumpal. They told us that the villages would be relocated and residents would be given jobs. A notification was issued for relocation. Thirteen years have passed, but no steps have been taken for relocation or jobs.”
He also alleged that no mining is being done in the two other villages, but the people are being provided all facilities.
Rajendra Singh, another agitator, said, “We had several meetings with MCL and the district administration about our demands in the past. The MCL authorities have been trying to evade the issues.”
However, no response was received from MCL authorities.

For instance, the interviewers didn’t like your personality or their expectations did not match your skill. However, an interview depends on a lot of things like being prepared, acting confident, and showing enthusiasm.
A former recruiter of Google has revealed the No. 1 thing that people require to crack an interview. Nolan Church, former recruiter with Google and DoorDash shared that the aspirants should have proper knowledge about the company they are applying to and the role.
Church emphasised that showing ‘lack of preparedness’ sends the wrong message and fails to demonstrate genuine interest in the job. Church also highlighted another red flag and said that many candidates say a lot of words but nothing meaningful.
He advised that before going for an interview, a candidate should peruse the company’s website and its Linkedln page, familiarize with its mission and goals, and thoroughly read the description.
Speaking about the candidates who impress him, Church said, “The best candidates that I met are the ones from whom I’m always learning something, the candidates who value continuous learning and meaningful contributions.”
For the unversed, Nolan Church is the CEO of Continuum and former recruiter with Google and DoorDash.

The study, published in the journal ‘Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes’, showed that two psychosocial stressors -- job strain and effort-reward imbalance -- at work may increase heart disease risk.
“Considering the significant amount of time people spend at work, understanding the relationship between work stressors and cardiovascular health is crucial for public health and workforce well-being,” said Mathilde Lavigne-Robichaud, CHU de Quebec-University Laval Research Center in Quebec, Canada.
The study revealed that men who experienced either job strain or effort-reward imbalance had a 49 per cent increase in risk of heart disease compared to men who didn’t report those stressors.
However, men reporting both job strain and effort-reward imbalance were at twice the risk of heart disease compared with men who did not experience the combined stressors.
The impact of psychosocial stress at work on women’s heart health was inconclusive.
According to Lavigne-Robichaud, ‘Job strain’ refers to work environments where employees face a combination of high job demands and low control over their work.
‘Effort-reward imbalance’ means when employees invest high effort into their work, but they perceive the rewards they receive in return as insufficient or unequal to the effort.
Researchers studied nearly 6,500 workers, average age of 45 years old, without heart disease and followed them for 18 years, from 2000 to 2018.
Researchers measured job strain and effort-reward imbalance with results from proven questionnaires and retrieved heart disease information using established health databases.
“Our results suggest that interventions aimed at reducing stressors from the work environment could be particularly effective for men and could also have positive implications for women, as these stress factors are associated with other prevalent health issues such as depression,” Robichaud said.
“The study's inability to establish a direct link between psychosocial job stressors and coronary heart disease in women signals the need for further investigation into the complex interplay of various stressors and women’s heart health.” Robichaud added.

Nearly 26,868 employees have been handed over pink slips by 98 startups, including unicorns led by the edtech majors, according to data by leading startup news portal Inc42.
At least 22 edtech startups have slashed 9,781 jobs to date.
In the first five months into 2023, more than 8,000 employees lost their jobs in India by nearly 50 startups.
Homegrown virtual events platform Airmeet sacked about 30 per cent of its workforce, or at least 75 employees, according to the report.
Corporate expense management platform Happay, owned by credit Card bill payment provider CRED, slashed nearly 35 per cent of its workforce as part of a restructuring exercise.
Another homegrown edtech startup Teachmint laid off over 70 employees, its second round of job cuts after sacking about 45 workers more than five months ago.
Chennai-based edtech startup Skill-Lync laid off employees as it consolidates operations across Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad amid global macroeconomic conditions.
The year 2023 has become the worst year for tech employees as nearly 2 lakh tech employees from Big Tech firms to startups have been sacked to date globally, as companies like Meta, BT, Vodafone and many others announced further plans to lay off more employees in coming months.
As per the data by layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi, 695 tech companies have shown the doors to around 1.98 lakh employees so far this year.
That finding comes from the World Economic Forum, which published a report based on surveys of more than 800 companies, reports CNN.
WEF -- which hosts a gathering of global leaders in Davos, Switzerland, every year -- found that employers expect to create 69 million new jobs by 2027 and eliminate 83 million positions.
That will result in a net loss of 14 million jobs, equivalent to 2 per cent of current employment, CNN reported.
Many factors will feed labour market churn during that period. The shift to renewable energy systems will be a powerful engine for generating jobs, while slower economic growth and high inflation will drive losses.
The rush to deploy artificial intelligence, meanwhile, will serve as both a positive and a negative force.
Companies will need new workers to help them implement and manage AI tools.
Employment of data analysts and scientists, machine learning specialists and cybersecurity experts is forecast to grow 30 per cent on average by 2027, according to WEF.
At the same time, the proliferation of artificial intelligence will put many roles at risk, as robots replace humans in some cases.
There could be 26 million fewer record-keeping and administrative jobs by 2027, WEF predicted.
Data entry clerks and executive secretaries are expected to see the steepest losses, CNN reported.
Despite the recent sensation surrounding tools like ChatGPT, automation has expanded slowly in the early part of this decade.
Organisations polled by WEF estimated that 34 per cent of all business-related tasks are currently performed by machines. That's just a hair above the figure from 2020.

Although not all rules and tips can be applicable to everyone, there are certain interview tips that can help almost everyone to perform well in the interview.
Your resume must be appealing. Lots of tools and techniques are easily available for free on the web which you can use to make the resume look appealing and more importantly easy on the eyes so that the viewer is happy while reviewing it. Also taking care of the format, size, and colour of the font ensures that the recruiter does not miss anything during his review.
Your resume is the first thing that introduces you to the interviewer. So before forwarding it, just go through the resume properly to check whether you have added all the latest updates regarding your skills, experience, and even the latest certifications. Try to check it from the perspective of the recruiter and judge whether the tone and the inputs in the resume are enough to convince the recruiter to offer you the position for which you are applying.
It is expected that the other person is going to ask you questions as it is your interview. But you must also keep some questions ready for the interviewer so that you are quite clear when you are signing the job contract. It will also give your impression as a complete professional to the company.
Be prepared for those tough questions that will be directed at you with the intention to see your temperament and reactions. Instead of getting baffled, keep smiling while you answer to the best of your abilities. It is not always the question of whether you are right or wrong, but more often corporate are looking for guys who can handle tough situations coolly in the absence of proper resources.
Irrespective of whether the interview goes your way or not make sure to exit with proper politeness and courtesy so that they may or may not offer you a job but will always remember you and call you when the time or opportunity is right.
While earlier it was possible to get away with such lies as many times employers did not have any way to find out the truth, nowadays, all the data is available on the web and can be easily scanned or tracked.
Whenever you lie about your scores in exams or experiences, there is always a chance of getting caught. Instead, it is like setting a trap for you. Nowadays, it is easier for companies to do fact-checking for honesty and accuracy, and hence during the application process if they find anything dubious about your resume they are definitely going to toss it.
Once the HR manager comes to know that you have lied on your resume, your chances of getting a job in that company in the present or in the future are blown away. Notably, most HR professionals know each other very well and hence, simply by word of mouth, your story is bound to spread from one hiring manager to the other from different companies.
Once you join a company there is bound to be curiosity among your colleagues about you. And if you have lied about working at a prestigious company on your resume, they will ask you questions on the same so if you lie once it is going to shadow you everywhere afterwards.
Even if you sail through the interview and the initial days at the new company smoothly, you will always have a niggling worry about getting caught. This fear can also lower your confidence at work and affect you emotionally.
Depending on the consequences that your lie can attract, the company can take legal action against you which will completely destroy your career.

Earlier, it was up to individual teams at the company to decide who will come to office.
Jassy acknowledged that some roles will be exceptions to the new policy, like some salespeople and customer support, but "that will be a small minority."
He also admitted it is not simple to bring thousands of employees back to Amazon offices around the world.
"We are going to give the teams that need to do that work some time to develop a plan. We know that it won't be perfect at first, but the office experience will steadily improve over the coming months (and years)," he said in an email to employees.
"I know people will have questions about how this change will be implemented. We'll be finalising those details in the coming weeks," Jassy added.
It has been three years since the pandemic that Amazon recommended that all its employees "who were able to work from home do so".
The company subsequently updated guidance a few times, with the last guidance (in the second half of 2021) being that Director-level leaders would decide for their teams where they would work.
"It's easier to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture when we're in the office together most of the time and surrounded by our colleagues. It's especially true for new people (and we've hired a lot of people in the pandemic); but it's also true for people of all tenures at Amazon," said Jassy.
Teams tend to be better connected to one another when they see each other in person more frequently, according to him.
"I'm also optimistic that this shift will provide a boost for the thousands of businesses located around our urban headquarter locations and the dozens of cities around the world where our employees go to the office," Jassy noted.
“Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a proposal for creation of 50 posts of Fire Service Personnel in different ranks for four Airports under Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)– UDAN scheme,” said a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
The airports for which the new posts have been created are Jharsuguda, Utkela, Rourkela and Jeypore.
Out of the total posts, nine personnel each will be deployed at Utkela and Jeypore and 16 each at Jharsuguda and Rourkela.
It may be mentioned here that recently three fire stations have been made functional at three premier medical colleges of the State, namely – Cuttack, Berhampur and Burla.
Besides, two more Fire Stations have been made functional at Tihidi in Bhadrak and Baruan in Jajpur districts.
“These stations were running by rationalization of personnel at different other Fire Stations. Recently, 16 Fire Service Personnel have been deployed at Rourkela Airport in the month of December 2022,” the CMO statement added.
Many job seekers have been badly hit and trying their best to reach out to potential recruiters through social media and other job portals. Meanwhile, in the midst of such depressing layoffs, a lucky woman has shared how she landed a new job with 50% hike, work from home (WFH) option in just three days after being fired.
Life update: I was fired on Tuesday. On Friday I got a job offer that pays me 50% more, WFH option, and more PTO.
— babyCourtfits (@2020LawGrad) January 29, 2023
Taking to her Twitter handle, the woman shared how she received a job offer. Her story has been going insanely viral. The Twitter user by the name babyCourtfits, shared that she was fired on Tuesday and landed a new job on Friday, just three days after, with more perks.
Taking to her Twitter handle, she wrote, “Life Update: I was fired on Tuesday, On Friday I got a job offer that pays me 50% more, WFH option and more PTO.”
She further wrote, “This is a reminder to always back yourself. Never let the opinions of others make you question who you are or should be. I’m saying this after letting myself wallow in self pity for several days.”
With over 7M views, the tweet has garnered over 147K likes, 5445 retweets and counting.
Social media users appreciated and congratulated her for the good news in the midst of the layoffs.
