Delivering the keynote address at the B R Ambedkar Lecture Series organised by Ministry of Social Justice, here on Monday, the vice-chancellor said, "I don't think that Brahmins can sit in a crematoriums. Lord Shiva wears snakes around his neck, sits in crematorium and wears less clothes, so he may be from the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe community".
She stressed the need for "caste abolition" to make the society better.
"We should understand the origin of our Gods anthropologically or scientifically. Anthropologically, Laxmi, Shakti and even Lord Jagannath do not belong to the upper caste. Lord Jagannath is from Adivasi (tribal) community," she said.
The vice-chancellor said, "As per Manusmriti women are Scheduled Caste. In such a situation a woman cannot say that she belongs to Brahmin or other community."
"No God is a Brahmin. The highest is Kshatriya," she claimed.
She said that till marriage, a woman gets her father's caste and after wedding she gets her husband's caste which itself is regressive.
"There are many people who say that caste is not defined as per the community you take birth in but today it is based on the basis of birth," she claimed.
Recently, a Dalit boy was thrashed to death in Rajasthan allegedly for touching drinking water meant for students of upper caste.
Referring to human rights, she said no one should be meted out with such behaviour.
Extending her support for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), she said Bhim Rao Ambedkar h
The clashes erupted on Sunday afternoon following an argument between the two groups.
The Left alliance members accused the ABVP of forcefully imposing a ban on non vegetarian food at the Kaveri Hostel in the campus while the ABVP alleged that the members of the Left alliance including the NSUI were not allowing them to conduct a Pooja and Havan programme on the occasion of Ram Navami.
Later, in the evening, the clashes further intensified and images of wounded students went viral on the social media.
"Friends, ABVP does it again. First they tried to impose a non-veg ban on everybody in Kaveri Hostel, and when common students stood up against #FoodFascism, the Sanghi goons resorted to all out violence. Students are facing serious wounds," JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh tweeted.
Meanwhile, the ABVP, sharing a video of an injured student on Twitter, said that "Leftists, Communists have attacked ABVP activists and common students of JNU. ABVP Activist Ravi Raj severely injured this Naxali attack."

The entrance tests for the programmes will be held between December 27 and 30 this year at various centres.
It is pertinent to note that due to implementation of 2016 University Grants Commission (UGC) 2016 regulation there was a massive seat cuts in both the MPhil and PhD programmes. About 86% of the seats were cut bringing the number of seats down from 970 to 102.
The seat cuts had sparked sharp protests from students’ federations earlier this year. It was made a major issue during the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) polls held recently. The newly elected panel had promised to tackle the issue in their election manifesto.
University authorities said that there will be 459 undergraduate seats for the BA programmes, 1,118 post graduate seats for programmes such as MA, MSc, and MTech. There are also 240 part time diploma and certificate courses seats.
According to sources, Rs 2 crore will be provided to the University in the first phase while the remaining Rs 3 crore will be granted in the second phase.
An MoU in this regard was signed between the Odisha Culture department and JNU. Culture department secretary, Manoranjan Panigrahi and JNU vice chancellor Prof Jagdesh Kumar signed the MoU.
While all the regional languages have got chairs in the JNU, the Odisha government decided to set up one after Odia was accorded classical language status.
The chair has been set up with an aim to promote research and propagation of Odia language.
“The chair will help promote Odia language. Moreover, it will facilitate research on various aspects of the language and on the culture and tradition of Odisha. It will also help non-Odias to know the origins of the language,” said Panigrahi.
The university wants to promote regional languages. Being an Odia myself, I am very happy that such a step has been taken. I will do whatever I can to promote and propagate the Odia language,” said Kumar.
Kanhaiya Kumar who was addressing the Ajaadi Samavesh held in Bhubaneswar to mark the completion of 80 years of the All India Student Federation (AISF) acknowledged Naveen and BJD’s stance towards the saffron party following the Kandhamal riots.
“Our democratic right is to oppose and opposing a government does not tantamount to being against the country. The country has gone back to the pre-independence years and we are being threatened to keep our mouth shut,” rued Kanhaiya while addressing the rally.
The student leader trained its guns at the BJP-led NDA government on a host of issues and slammed it for not fulfilling the promises it made to the people.
“The country is not made up of only 31% of the electorates which voted for the BJP-led NDA Government at the centre. This is democracy and one should not forget that the rest 69% did not share your ideology. He slammed the BJP-led NDA government for dividing the country and putting the blame on others,” said Kanhaiya Kumar.
When inflation will come down, why unemployment has not reduced, and why there have been no concrete plans to eradicate illiteracy, asked Kanhaiya Kumar, while mocking the Prime Minister Narendra Modi by saying country's fate cannot be changed only with tweeting.
"I have no personal enmity with Modi, but these are ideological differences," Kanhaiya Kumar added.
"Doing politics over the (JNU) issue is very serious and dangerous. If some parties try to make it a political issue it is unfortunate," he said.
The government is very clear that all should together take a decision with cool mind to facilitate the ongoing inquiry and anyone found guilty should be dealt with in accordance with the law, the Union minister of state for Information and Broadcasting said.
"Twisting and stretching the matter unnecessarily would be politicisation," Rathore said.
Maintaining that it is not about the entire JNU, the minister said the objective of investigation is to identify only those who allegedly did wrong things against national interest.
If some individuals within the country raise anti-national slogans, it would be dangerous for the nation, he said.
The hearing was adjourned because Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat, who was scheduled to hear the matter, was on leave on Tuesday.
The Delhi Police on Monday filed the chargesheet naming former JNU student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and seven Kashmiri students as accused in the case.
The charges were slapped under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) dealing with sedition, voluntarily causing hurt, forgery, using as genuine a forged document, punishment for unlawful assembly, unlawful assembly with common object, rioting and criminal conspiracy.
The case involves an event organised on the JNU campus in February 2016 against the hanging of Parliament-attack mastermind Afzal Guru.
Both Kumar and Khalid have questioned the filing of the chargesheet, saying it was "politically motivated" and a "diversionary ploy" by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.
"Please note that the tentative dates for the JNU Entrance Examinations (JNUEE) for the Academic Year 2019-20 are December 27-30, 2018.
"The format for the JNUEE 2019-20 will be Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) through a computer-based test," it announced on its website.
The process to change the mode of test from subjective to objective type was initiated by the Vice Chancellor of the university through a 12-member committee formed earlier in the year.
The decision was passed in the varsity's Academic Council meeting, amid vehement protests from a section of students who deplored the online mode as a "scam" and as "unilaterally" imposed upon them by the university head.
Till now, the entrance examinations are conducted physically across centres, with some of them -- those conducted for M.Phil and Ph.D and language courses -- requiring a viva voce.
A case in this connection was registered on Friday, and the investigation is underway, he added.
Khalid also tweeted: "Filed a complaint with @DelhiPolice regarding Ravi Pujari's death threat to Jignesh and me."
Claiming to be on the hit list of Pujari who is on the run, Khalid has sought police protection. He said earlier in February 2016, also he had received similar threats
On Friday, Dalit leader and independent MLA from Gujarat Jignesh Mevani also alleged that he has received death threats from Pujari.
"Yesterday's (Friday's) incident was a very unfortunate one. Our deepest apologies to the media. Our intention wasn't to obstruct the media from doing its job," said DCP and Delhi Police spokesperson Madhur Verma in a statement.
On Friday, JNU teachers and students held a protest march demanding suspension of professor Atul Johri, accused of sexual harassment, and protesting against the removal of some department heads and a coordinator for not complying with the University's new attendance rules.
As the hundreds of protesting students and teachers from the University marched towards Parliament, the Delhi Police undertook a baton charge and fired water canons on the agitators near the INA Market. In the melee, a woman journalist and a woman photographer were assaulted.
The journalist has filed a case against a Delhi Police inspector for molesting her and the photographer complained of being roughed-up by policewomen. The protestors have claimed that the attack by police was "unprovoked".
The Delhi Police, in its statement, said the incident happened due to confusion as some female police personnel mistook the photojournalist as a protestor. It has, however, taken strong cognizance of the matter and ordered an inquiry.
"Delhi Police and I personally have always maintained that the media is an integral part of our democracy. We have always provided access to information and at our end have always tried to ensure media personnel covering the police don't face any problems while doing their job," said Verma.
Meanwhile, several journalists from various organisations gathered outside the office of Delhi Police Commissioner in the afternoon to protest against the incident.
"This is not an isolated incident. Journalists in the line of duty have occasionally been roughed up by the police in the past also. Let us gather in large numbers and make our voice heard," said one of the appeals to media personnel.
This is the fourth campus visit by the investigating agency in the last 10 days. The CBI filed a case on June 3 to probe Najeeb's mysterious disappearance.
On May 16, the Delhi High Court asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the case of the first year M.Sc. student.
Najeeb, 27, went missing from his JNU hostel on the night of October 14-15 following an alleged altercation with members of the RSS student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The ABVP has denied any involvement in his disappearance.
Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru Uuniversity staged a sit-in outside the northern gate of the campus, following which some of them tried to close the gate and stopped people from entering or coming out of the varsity campus.
Security men dispersed the protesters, triggering a minor clash.
The students later continued their demonstration over the University Grants Commission (UGC) 2016 notification that restricts a professor from guiding more than three M.Phil and eight Ph.D scholars.
New Delhi: The screening of a film on the contentious issue of 'love jihad' at Jawaharlal Nehru University here was disrupted by a few student groups, who alleged that a hate campaign was being propagated by showing the movie.
The screening of the film titled 'In the Name of Love-Melancholy of God's Own Country', was organised by Global Indian Foundation and Vivekanand Vichar Manch of JNU.
According to the organisers, the film, directed by Sudipto Sen, focussed on the issue of 'love jihad' and religious conversion of girls in Kerala.
Members of Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union and Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment disrupted the screening, alleging a hate campaign was being propagated in the guise of the film's screening.
Minor scuffles erupted between protesters and ABVP members. The Delhi Police said it has received complaints from both the sides and is looking into yesterday's incident.
Students opposed to the film had assembled at Sabarmati dhaba to protest the "hate propaganda in the name of love jihad". They breached security cordons and disrupted the screening by holding placards in front of the screen.
"Why is ABVP/RSS hiding behind Vivekanand Vichar Manch? We won't let the RSS's venomous 'Love Jihad' myth be propagated," said a statement issued by the protesters.
Former JNUSU president Geeta Kumari claimed the film "spreading communal venom and bigotry" has been screened by the Vivekananda Vichar Mach, a front organisation of ABVP.
"JNU students standing up for gender justice and against politics of hate in the name of love jihad protested against such politics. The peaceful demonstrators were showered with eggs and stones to create a situation of chaos," she said.
"The JNUSU condemns these anti-social elements that have vitiated the university's atmosphere. It is reminiscent of Ramjas College, where ABVP beat up university students," she added.
An effigy of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the ABVP was set on fire to protest the film's screening. In the melee, a few students got injured, while a private security guard had to be hospitalised.
Former JNUSU president Mohit Kumar Pandey, who was allegedly attacked by ABVP members, said: "It was an attempt on my life. Big stones were hurled at me and I was attacked with broken glasses. The windshield of my friend's car has been totally shattered."
The ABVP in a statement said: "After disrupting the screening of the movie at Sabarmati dhaba, the left-wing protesters grievously injured a guard intentionally.
The initiative will help students from remote regions have access to JNU's vast range of courses, the release said.

The formation of SCEL platform had received nod from the varsity's executive council meeting on November 23.
"Universities should not remain as ivory towers. They should reach out to the society. One way of doing this is to make high quality education more inclusive through time and space independent learning," JNU Vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar noted.
After CP Chandrasekhar's term ended on September 30, the Vice Chancellor appointed Prof Pradipta K Chaudhary - sixth in line of seniority - as the dean of the School of Social Sciences (SSS).
In a letter to VC M Jagadesh Kumar, the senior-most professor, Kunal Chakrabarti, and three others Rajat Datta, Jayati Ghosh and Ravi Srivastava said the decision has "surprised" and "dismayed" them as the JNU has a long-standing practice of going by seniority and rotation.
Binod Khadria, who is fifth in seniority, is on a long leave abroad.
"This appointment has meant superseding five senior professors without citing any reason. This is clearly arbitrary and and unprecedented decision that has surprised and dismayed us," the letter said, urging the VC to cancel the decision immediately and call for a meeting.
They claimed that such decisions would give rise to fear of arbitrariness and favouritism thereby setting a dangerous precedent for future functioning of the institution.
"Since the dean is involved in Selection Committees of faculty members, it may add to concerns that admin may be trying to exert undue and partisan influence over selections," the letter said.
The JNU registrar or the Vice Chancellor did not respond to calls or messages in the issue.
After the JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA) criticised the appointment, seven emeritus professors had accused the VC of breaching conventions and ignoring objections of the faculty in this matter.
The JNU administration had in its 269th Executive Council meeting held on September 18 ordered for dissolution of GSCASH, an independent body.
The following day a section of JNU teachers and students approached the Delhi High Court challenging the university's decision of disbanding GSCASH and forming the ICC instead.
The JNU administration has now put out a schedule for electing three student representatives for the Internal Complaints Committee.

The polls will be held on September 29 between 9 AM to 5 PM and counting of votes will be held immediately after the polls are over, a release by the JNU administration said.
On the other hand, the GSCASH student election panel, which had put on hold its September 22 poll to elect four representatives, will go ahead with its plans after a resolution to this effect was passed by the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) in its Extraordinary University General Body Meeting yesterday.
"Most probably by tomorrow we will put out a new election schedule. The JNUSU gave us the mandate to go ahead with the elections," a GSCASH election committee member said.
JNUSU and JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA), both opposing the formation of ICC, accused nominated members of the body of "not having credentials to deal with sexual harassment complaints".
"None of the members of the ICC, particularly its chair, have any credentials of working on sexual harassment or the cause of women," JNUTA president Ayesha Kidwai said.
JNUSU vice president Simone Zoya Khan said though the ICC rules mentions about confidentiality of complainants, it is not absolute as the members are nominated by the vice chancellor.
After a section of JNU teachers and students approached the Delhi High Court over the issue, the court asked the JNU administration to maintain status quo on the sealing of GSCASH office and sought its reply on the matter.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) were also issued notices and their responses have been sought.
The university administration, however, said the "admission process is not over and it is yet announce a second list".
The JNUTA in a statement alleged that only 74 candidates were offered seats, of which only three belonged to Schedule Caste and one to Schedule Tribe.
"Most distressingly, there has been a complete failure to satisfy the constitutional provisions for reservations and the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act," JNUTA president Ayesha Kidwai said in the release.
JNU Registrar Pramod Kumar said: "We going according to the UGC Gazette Notification 2016. A second list is yet to be announced. The admission process is not over."
"Normally, a second list comes out when seats offered in the first list are not filled," Kidwai said.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Naveen Kumar Kashyap directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to supply the documents including witnesses' statements, in physical or electronic form, and listed the case for further hearing on May 7.
The court observed that there cannot be a "half-hearted approach" and effective opportunity be given to Najeeb's mother to file protest petition.
The court's order came while hearing a protest petition filed by Ahmed's mother, Fatima Nafees, against the closure report in the case.
The CBI filed the closure report in the case in October 2018.
Ahmed, 27, an M.Sc first-year student, was reported missing from the JNU campus after an alleged scuffle with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has, however, denied its involvement in his disappearance.

Here's the detail
In an exclusive interview to OTV, Suna spoke about his struggle and how he was inspired to become a part of JNU.
In the year 2008-09, Suna came to Delhi after completing Plus-II and started working as a helper with Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL).
“I started working as a helper at the gas company for a salary of Rs 3,500 per month,” said Suna.
Suna says that in 2012 after knowing about Baba Saheb Ambedkar and his teachings, he was inspired and decided to be a historian.
“I lost my mother at an early age. I didn’t receive any help from the government. After I was inspired by Baba Ambedkar’s teachings, I got associated with groups & people with similar thoughts. Those were the ones who helped me,” said Suna.
“After completing my schooling in village, I enrolled in a college 15 km away from my home to where I used to travel on a cycle,” added Suna.
Speaking about his poll campaign, Suna said, “Intense campaigning is currently underway. I have received a good response from the Odia community of JNU. Overall response is quite good.”
Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar Jain at the Patiala House Court while granting interim bail to Rashid, said: "Considering all the facts, I am of the view that matter requires investigation in detail...Till then accused shall not be arrested, however, she shall join the investigation as and when called by the Investigating Officer (IO)."
The court then posted the matter for hearing on November 5.
During the course of the hearing, Additional Public Prosecutor submitted that the police had not even issued a notice to Shehla Rashid yet.
The counsel for the accused submitted before the court that his client is ready to join the investigation and would cooperate with the police.
The public prosecutor also submitted that the police has not received any complaint from the Army.
He further added that the police needs a substantial time of at least six weeks to probe the matter.
Shehla Rashid was booked on Friday for sedition over her comments about alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
The Delhi Police's Special Cell said that the FIR was registered on September 3 and Rashid, who is also a JNU Ph.D scholar, was booked for sedition on a criminal complaint by Supreme Court lawyer Alok Srivastav who had sought her arrest.
"An FIR has been registered against her under sections 124-A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity), 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly tweeting false information about Army raids in the Kashmir Valley based on a complaint filed by Supreme Court lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava," a senior police officer said.
In a series of tweets, Rashid had claimed that the Indian Army was indiscriminately picking up men, raiding houses and torturing people in the valley.
She claimed that human rights abuses were being carried out in Kashmir.
The allegations had drawn sharp reactions. Rashid, however, had said that she was ready to give the evidence when the Indian Army constitutes an inquiry.
The Indian Army has officially rejected Rashid's claims and called them "baseless" and "unverified".
After the Army dismissed her claims, many accused Rashid of spreading fake news to disrupt peace in the Valley.
The order for staying of results was passed on September 6 by Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva who also issued notice to the varsity and sought its response.
"...the University is directed not to notify the results till the next date of hearing," the court said while posting the matter for September 17.
The court's order came on pleas filed by two students who alleged that their nominations for the polls were rejected illegally. Both had applied for contesting for the post of councillor.
However, the lawyer fraternity feels that in matters pertaining to student elections, courts should intervene only in the rarest of rare situations.
"In normalcy and according to the well settled laws, the courts should not intervene in the election process of any kind. However, in cases where something culpable or apparent has happened or if the rule of law is not followed, only in such cases the courts should interfere with such processes," said advocate Ashok Aggarwal who primarily deals in matters related to schools and education bodies.
The Delhi High Court on September 6 ordered a stay on the declaration of JNUSU results till September 17 while hearing pleas by two students who alleged that their nominations were rejected illegally. Both had applied for contesting as Councillors.
JNU Standing Counsel Monica, representing the varsity in the matter before the High Court, said, "The petitioners have stated that the Lyngdoh committee recommendations have not been followed. The election committee in JNU has dismissed the petitioner's candidature in a single line order without citing reasons."
"Rules must be followed. These are for the orderly conduct of the elections of any kind. So, if the High Court finds out that the rules have not been followed, it can declare the results void and can order re-elections or counting. We would be saying in our reply on 17th that the varsity is bound to follow the Lyngdoh guidelines as they are Supreme Court approved guidelines."
Another advocate Khargesh Jha, said, "The High Court has a very wide jurisdiction under Section 226 and if something is not going on lawfully, then the court would intervene. The work of the court is to establish a rule of law. In normal course, the court does not order a stay because when you stay something and then hear it, it can result in a long delay because of the lengthy legal procedures".
"However, the court has the adequate powers. If it finds anything is wrong, it can set aside the results anytime. The court should take such a decision in rarest of the rare cases and not in routine manner," he added.
The plea sought directions to the JNU to hold the polls as per the recommendations of the Lyngdoh committee.
Based on an order of the Supreme Court in December 2005, a six-member committee headed by former Chief Election Commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh had made certain recommendations with regard to aspects like eligibility criteria, criminalization, financial transparency and expenditures in students' union elections across the country.
Among the recommendations, the Committee had said that a candidate can spend only Rs. 5,000 for contesting elections, he/she should have at least 75% attendance, a candidate shall neither have criminal background nor there should be any disciplinary action by the varsity against the candidate etc.
JNU vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar said the main objectives of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) were to promote and enhance interactions and collaborations between the faculty, staff and students of the university with the ICMR institutions through visits and exchange programmes, joint academic and research programmes.
The MoU was aimed at enhancing technological collaboration in the areas of national interest, the university said.
The cooperation will focus on faculty and student exchange programmes, increasing the opportunities for interaction among the members of the faculty and students between the schools and centres of the JNU and the ICMR institutions as well as creating visiting or adjunct faculty positions and short visits, it added.
Kumar emphasised on priorities to undertake joint research projects in the areas of bioinformatics, genomics, medical health economics, chemoinformatics, drug discovery, science policy, social medicine and community health etc.
He also said the possibilities of establishing a joint research centre would be explored for long-term collaborations.
Speaking in a television interview, he said that it was not as if the two had deep disagreements. "(Sitharaman was) One of the people whom I knew well... We were even often on similar sides on certain issues. She was my contemporary in JNU. She knew me, I knew her," he said.
"I would not say we were close friends, but we were friends. And it's not that we had deep disagreements," Banerjee added.
The statement gains significance as Banerjee, one of the three Nobel Prize winners in economics this year along with his wife Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, has faced flak from several quarters in the government, including Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, after he said that Indian economy was in a "tailspin".
When "the economy is going into a tailspin is the time when you don't worry so much about monetary stability and you worry a little more about demand, the demand is a huge problem right now in the economy," Banerjee said during a news conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US last week after he was named for the coveted award.
Piyush Goyal said that it was the claim of a "left-leaning" economist. Banerjee later expressed unhappiness over the Union Minister questioning his "professionalism". He has also been known for the criticism of demonetisation as he described the move as not being "well considered".
"You have to take it seriously that the economy is in crisis. If you look at that one number that jumps out at me from the analysis of the NSS (National Sample Survey) data, it is the average consumption in India. We are slightly lower today than it was in 2014-15. That's an unprecedented event," Banerjee said in the interview regarding the slowing economy.
Regarding the recent issues in JNU, the economist said that the events were "unfortunate" and that JNU has been an institution that provided the opportunity for diverse opinions and there should be an environment for discussion with "civility" among the people with diverse and different views.
The Executive Council is the highest decision-making body of the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The students from Left-backed political outfits have been protesting against the hike in hostel fees for almost a fortnight, and the representatives from RSS student wing ABVP have also planned a march to the UGC office over similar demands.
The students' union claims the draft hostel manual, approved by the Inter-Hall administration, has provisions for hostel fee hike, dress code and curfew timings.
The students had gathered outside the convention centre on the campus but, to press their demands effectively, shifted their protest to the administration block, which houses the vice chancellor's office and the office of other senior administration officials, on Wednesday.
Beating their daflis, they shouted slogans against the JNU administration and the vice chancellor.
The JNU Teachers Association, representatives of which attend the EC meeting, alleged they were not informed about the change in the venue to the office of the Association of Indian Universities near ITO.
JNUTA president DK Lobiyal said the association condemns the decision to shift the venue.
"We have a range of issues, apart from the hostel manual, like promotion of teachers, so that our views can be raised. For last three-four years, even the Academic Council meetings have been postponed or shifted. We condemn it and the VC should not handle the university like this," Lobiyal said.
"The meeting was supposed to be held at the convention centre inside the campus but when three EC members professors Sachidanand Sinha, Moushumi Basu and Baviskar Sharad Prahlad reached the venue, there was no meeting," Lobiyal added.
On Monday, the students had gheraoed AICTE building, the venue for varsity's convocation, during which Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal was stuck for six hours.
"That day police used tear gas, lathicharge on us. Why were people protesting that day even after getting degrees. Our protest will continue till the vice chancellor meets us," JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said.
"The administration said the students didn't want to have a dialogue while the situation is the other way round. We have been approaching the administration but there is nobody to talk too," she added.
The students have been demanding the withdrawal of the draft hostel manual, in which service charges of Rs 1,700 were introduced and the one-time mess security fee, which is refundable, has been hiked from Rs 5,500 to Rs 12,000.
The rent for a single-seater room has been increased from Rs 20 per month to Rs 600 per month, while the rent for a double-seater room has been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 300 per month.
JNU Students Union on Sunday called some Left MPs and leaders to highlight their agitation against the Vice Chancellor and administration before their march to Parliament on Monday.
CPI-M MP from Kerala K K Ragesh said that he was cautioned by the JNU Registrar through e-mail not to attend the protest as it would be contempt of High Court orders. Lashing out at the VC and administration, Ragesh said that this is "not fascist Hindu Rashtra" and "We are still living in a democracy".
Slamming the JNU VC, M Jagadesh Kumar for not negotiating with the students, the Left MP said that he should remember that "He is VC of a university, not Superintendent of Tihar Jail".
Ragesh alleged that all the education reforms being pursued by the present government including the New Education Policy, raising fees, ending student politics is part of the recommendations of a committee comprising Mukesh Ambani and Kumarmangalam Birla on reforms in education which gave its report in 2001.
Ragesh said the government never said it had accepted the committee's recommendations but all the proposed changes are being implemented now. He alleged that the government is trying to hike fees of public education institutions and creating institutions for the elite. He said the institutions will become like Jio University with no students and faculty but become institutes of eminence.
He asked the government to intervene in the JNU matter and assured that MPs across party lines will raise the matter in Parliament.
Former MP Mohammed Saleem accused the government of cutting down expenditure on education. He said, "Paathshala mein kharcha nahin karenge, gaushala mein karenge".
He said the government is deliberately raising the cost of education in institutions and creating an atmosphere through the media that why institutions like JNU are being given freebies.
As the lights went out during the protest session, the CPM leader said, "one man is trying to throttle democracy."
Criticising the Modi government, Saleem said that people elected Modi as Prime Minister "ki acche din aayenge, woh dekhne ko mil raha rah hai".
JNU Students Union President Aishe Ghosh said that the new National Education Policy has been formulated to aim at generating profits and institutions like JNU are being targeted.
Ghosh said the JNU students will take out a march to Parliament on Monday and the question is - not why JNU students are paying Rs 200 as hostel fee but the question is - why the other universities are paying lakhs of rupees for education. She said the JNU students are ready for a dialogue with the VC and demand a complete rollback of the hike in hostel fees.
M Jagadesh Kumar in a tweet earlier in the day asked the students to return to their classes. "JNU Administration appeals to the JNU students to return to the classes and labs and resume their academic and research work so that the losses incurred already on these counts may be compensated. This will help in completing the academic programmes without any further obstacles", he said.
"It's a way to appeal to lawmakers to fight on our behalf inside the floor of the house," says JNUSU.
As hundreds of students tried to march, barricades were put in place by Delhi Police and a massive deployment of personnel was reinforced around the JNU campus. Section 144 was imposed and prohibitory orders were also put in place.
With posters in hands and chanting anti-fee hike slogans, hundreds of students marched on the streets of the national capital. This even as the Education Secretary earlier addressed their concern by a partial roll back and on Monday announcing a new committee, which will open dialogue with the students.
The JNU has been rocked with protests and vandalism allegedly by students, with graffiti painted on Vice Chancellor's office and the Dean held hostage.
A resolution circulated among the students by the JNUSU states that the university general body meeting (UGBM) has resolved to continue the struggle against inter-hall administration (IHA) manual by boycotting all academic activities, including examinations.
"The UGBM resolves to identify 36-day massive struggle against the IHA manual through complete non-cooperation with the JNU administration and complete academic shutdown, including the boycott of any and all academic activities like presentation, examination and synopsis submission," it reads.
The resolution has called for rejecting orders mentioned in the manual, like fees hike, dress code, fine and timings of entry and exit, labelling them as 'draconian measures'.
The JNUSU has also urged the Ministry of Human Resource Development to remove the Vice-Chancellor and charge him for "destroying the ethos of JNU" and his "lack of competency to deal with the matter of acute crisis at the university."
The JNU students had staged massive protests in November against fee hike.

At a time when there is a huge slowdown in the economy, anecdotal evidence is that jobs are hard to come by. A burgeoning unemployment problem coupled with hike in fees across institutions and universities is leading to unrest and agitation has overtaken learning.
Premier institutes, IIT, JNU, AIIMS and IIMC are all seeing protests by students in the last few months in one form or the other. Teachers in Delhi University are protesting non-payment of 3-month salary and regularization of ad hoc teachers. The BHU has been in a controversy with the appointment of Feroz Khan as teacher for Sanskrit.
IIT Madras has been rocked by the suicide of a Muslim student, and there have been charges of discrimination. IIT Madras is also facing allegations of discrimination against students and faculty from Dalit communities.
In the most recent incident, thousands of ad hoc Delhi University teachers under the aegis of DUTA gheraoed the office of Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University seeking three-month unpaid salary and demanding their regularization. Such was the urgency of the matter that a meeting was held between the agitating teachers and varsity administration which started at 3 a.m. and continued for 6 hours till 9 a.m. without any resolution.
The DUTA teachers have now been given an assurance by the officials of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry. The Ministry, it seems, is only putting out small fires all over the place. Last week, a high-level committee formed by the Ministry had gone to Jawaharlal Nehru University to hold talks with the students.
Though there are no protests yet in schools, there has been a fee hike by CBSE also for examinations. "The CBSE has increased examination fees of Class X and XII Board Examination 2020, on 'no profit no loss' principle from Rs 750 to Rs 1,500 for all categories of students, including SC/ST candidates for all schools in whole of India, except for schools of Delhi government," HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said.
On the agitations in universities, Twitter is dominated with hashtags such as feehike, jnu, aims, iimc, iit.
What started as a protest against fee hikes is metamorphosing into a war cry by the students to protect public-funded education. This implies low fees, opportunities for those who cannot afford and empowerment of the deprived sections.
This has a economic and social element to the agitations where the aspirations of the students which have been fuelled by wild promises are now clashing with the prevailing realities of few jobs and low incomes with the GDP at a 6-year low of 4.5 per cent.
Some MPs of Left parties have pointed out that the Central government is following the recommendations of the Birla-Ambani committee which gave its report way back in 2000 under the then NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Critics say that without saying so, the recommendations of the panel are implemented including fee hikes, setting up of private universities, de-politicisation of campuses and asking universities to generate 25 per cent of fund requirements from internal resources.
Social media is abuzz with chatter over turbulence in various institutions. IIT Delhi Research scholars have expressed solidarity to students who are fighting against the unjustifiable fee hikes.
Netizens have commented, "The abominable fee hike in JNU and IIMC is a glaring example of how trapping students in acres of loans for higher education is the perfect way to keep them busy in this putrid cycle of debt, so that they don't have time to even think about changing the world!!!".
The IGNOU Research Scholars' Association also supported JNU students. "We,IGNOU Research Scholars' Association, New Delhi, stand with #JNU students on the issue of #FeeHike".
A former student from AIIMS Bhopal tweeted, "Back in my college days i paid only 6k as my whole 5 year tuition fee plus hostel and library fee in @AIIMSBhopal. It is going to be 60 k per year soon! Education should be free."
A student of IIMC Delhi studying English language journalism tweeted, "It is the duty of the government to provide affordable education to students. (Rs) 1.65 lacs for 9 months course seriously?? It's a public funded education institution".
A twitter user posted "#M_Tech fee is going to be increased by 900%. Almost 2 lakh per year. They think #AIIMS students are ready to pay even if their parents have to sell home or any other property".
A tweeple wrote, "#JNU is on protest, lots of students are getting affected by the fee hike all across India including #IITs, #NLU. Is this the parties have promised in their manifestos?"
According to the sources, the clash took place during a public meeting organised by the JNU Teachers' Association.
The students' union claimed that its president Aishe Ghosh and many other students were injured in stone-pelting by ABVP members.
But the RSS-backed students' organisation alleged that its members were brutally attacked by Left-affiliated student outfits and 25 of them were injured.
The JNUSU claimed that "ABVP members wearing masks were moving around on the campus with lathis, rods and hammers".
"They are pelting bricks...getting into hostels and beating up students. Several teachers and students have also New Delhi, Jan 6 (IANS) Unprecedented violence was seen in the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday as several masked individuals, both male and female, thrashed students, including girls, and teachers inside the campus with wooden and metal rods, injuring many.
While the number of the injured in the various clashes which occurred through the day was not yet known, at least 20 students were admitted to the AIIMS with severe injuries following the evening clash.
They included two office-bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh - who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod, received severe injuries.
"I have been brutally beaten up by masked people. I don't know who they were," Ghosh said as she broke into tears while blood flowed profusely from her head.
JNUSU General Secretary Satish Chandra was also injured in the attack.
JNUSU Vice President Saket Moon accused the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad of leading the attack, which was bolstered by outsiders.
Hostel rooms, and lobbies, and vehicles standing on the road were vandalised during the assault.
There were terrifying moments for students as the masked men and even women with faces covered, barged into hostels, ransacked rooms and beat up the frightened students.
A girl student recounted those moments in tears: "I was in the room and I heard loud noises and I saw many girls coming. I asked everyone to lock their rooms. We were in terror. While I was trying to take a video clip, they hit me with a stone."
On the other hand, the ABVP blamed Left-affiliated students for an earlier attack on its activists that had left several injured.
"Around four to five hundred members of the left-wing gathered around the Periyar hostel, vandalised the hostel and forcibly entered the hostel to thrash the ABVP activists inside," ABVP's JNU unit President Durgesh told IANS.
The ABVP claims its presidential candidate Manish Jangid was injured badly and may have suffered a fractured hand after he was assaulted.
According to intelligence reports and students, the genesis of the clashes began in the confrontation between students seeking to stall the semester registration process as part of their agitation against the hostel fees hike and groups opposing them. Members of the earlier group were allegedly behind the disruption of the varsity's Wifi network late on Friday.
The JNU administration summoned the police which deployed in the campus and prohibitory orders were imposed. Four goons were nabbed from the varsity's main North Gate late on Sunday.
Both groups also reached the Vasant Kunj police station late night to file complaints over the violence.
While eyewitnesses maintained that the flare-up could have been averted if the police had taken action on time, Special Commissioner of Police, R.S. Krishnaiah said that the police entered the campus only on the varsity administration's request following the clash.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah ordered the Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take all necessary action to control the situation in the campus. He also ordered an inquiry.
The violence was condemned by leaders across the political spectrum.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar - both JNU alumni - on Sunday condemned the violence.
"Horrifying images from JNU- the place I know and remember was one for fierce debates and opinions but never violence. I unequivocally condemn the events of today. This government, regardless of what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students," Sitharaman, who did her MPhil from JNU, said in a tweet.
Jaishankar, who has an MA in Political Science and an MPhil and PhD in International Relations from JNU, also took to Twitter to express his reaction.
"Have seen pictures of what is happening in JNU. Condemn the violence unequivocally. This is completely against the tradition and culture of the university," he tweeted.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who reached the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to meet the injured JNU students, later said, in a tweet, that there was "something deeply sickening about a government that allows and encourages such violence to be inflicted on their own children".
Her brother and former party chief Rahul Gandhi attacked the Central government.
"The brutal attack on JNU students & teachers by masked thugs, that has left many seriously injured, is shocking. The fascists in control of our nation, are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today's violence in JNU is a reflection of that fear. #SOSJNU," he said, in a tweet.
CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, also a former JNUSU leader, also condemned the violence, and the party's student wing, the Students Federation of India, called for a nationwide protest on Monday.
CPI-M leader Brinda Karat also reached the AIIMS to meet the injured students.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also said he was shocked by the violence.
Jamia students reached the Delhi Police HQ at ITO to protest, while the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association called upon all sections of society to condemn the "heinous act".
In Kolkata, Ghosh's "scared" father, said with the current volatile situation, even he could be beaten up any time. Her mother demanded the JNU Vice Chancellor's resignation and affirmed she won't ask her daughter to back out of the protests.
Former Union Human Resource Development Secretary R. Subrahmanyam, who was recently transferred to the Social Justice Ministry allegedly over his position on the JNU students protests against the fee hike, demanded "immediate action against the hooligans".
The BJP also condemned the violence, but called it a "desperate attempt by forces of anarchy" misleading students to achieve their own political goals.
"We strongly condemn the violence on JNU campus. This is a desperate attempt by forces of anarchy, who are determined to use students as cannon fodder, create unrest to shore up their shrinking political footprint. Universities should remain places of learning and education," the party said in a tweet.

Violence broke out at the JNU on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in the police which conducted a flag march. At least 28 people, including JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as chaos reigned on the campus for nearly two hours.
The delegation comprising students and teachers from JNU, Jamia and Delhi University submitted an application to the Delhi Police PRO with four demands, including urgent medical assistance to injured students and arrest of the accused behind the violence.
"The police have assured us that they will look into the matter and our demands," president Federation of Central University Teachers' associations Rajib Ray said.
The students demanded that the police leave the JNU campus.
Earlier, police said peace has been restored in the JNU after the violence.
Eyewitnesses alleged the attackers entered the JNU premises when a meeting was being held by JNU Teachers' Association on the issue of violence on campus and assaulted students and professors. They also barged into three hostels. Video footage aired by some TV channels showed a group of men, who were brandishing hockey sticks and rods, moving around a building.
The Left-controlled JNUSU and the RSS-backed ABVP blamed each other for the incident.

Former JNU students Umar Khalid and Kunal Kamra were part of the group which also held a candlelight vigil to show solidarity with JNU students.
Youngsters, mostly students from different city colleges, assembled on the pavement across Hotel Taj near the Gateway of India to condemn the violence.
It was an "impromptu assembly at a short notice, a student said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday talked to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and requested him to call representatives from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for discussions, officials said.
The telephonic conversation between the home minister and the LG came a day after masked men indulged in violence on the JNU campus.
"The home minister spoke to the LG and requested him to initiate discussions with representatives from the JNU," an official said.
Yesterday, the home minister had spoken to Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Police had appealed to protesters to shift but they didn't listen, so they were "relocated" to Azad Maidan near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the official said.
"As the demonstration was posing problems for tourists and in traffic movement, we requested the protesters to move to Azad Maidan. But some groups did not listen despite our repeated request, so we relocated them to the Azad Maidan," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sangramsingh Nishandar said.
Earlier, hundreds of people, including students, women and senior citizens - who assembled at the iconic Gateway of India since Sunday midnight - demanded action against those behind the JNU violence and resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Violence broke out in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus. Nearly 34 people were injured in the violence.
With tambourines and guitars in their hands and songs of revolution on their lips, people protested against the attack on JNU students throughout the night in front of the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace hotel here.
Songs like 'Hum dekhenge', 'Hum honge kamyab' and 'Sarfaroshi ki tamanna' rent the air as students of IIT Bombay, TISS, and members of students' organisations, including the ASFI, raised slogans against Modi and Shah.
The protesters waved the tricolour and raised slogans like 'Kagaz nahi dikhayenge' (won't show documents) and 'Tum Kaun ho be' (who are you?).
They also raised slogans against the alleged "tanashahi" (dictatorship) of Modi-Shah as they opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act, the National Register of Citizens and the National Population Register.
The protesters also brought up the issue of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act-2019.
There was heavy police deployment at the protest site where water, tea, biscuits and fruits were served to protesters during the night. The city civic body also made arrangements for toilets.
The protest organisers had earlier asked participants to bring food, water, bed sheets, jackets, mats, power banks, charger and medicines along with them.
On Monday, protests were organised near the Hutatma Chowk in the Fort area, but later the permission was denied.
A call was given that people join the protest in front of the Gateway of India. Demonstrations had started thereafter Sunday midnight.
Beside Mumbai, protests against the violence were held on Monday in Aurangabad and Pune, among other cities.
Political leaders led by state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also condemned the attack.
Maharashtra minister Jitendra Awhad joined the protest at the Gateway of India on Monday, while Thackeray said the JNU violence reminded him of the deadly 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

In a dig at the newspaper, he said it seems the New York Times consists of the most "ardent bhakts" of Lord Ram as they seem to find him everywhere.
He also said he was waiting to read the newspaper's report on last week's violence at a historic Sikh shrine in Pakistan.
The Union minister's criticism of the US daily came a day after he hit out at British daily Financial Times for referring to the masked mob that attacked JNU students and teachers as "nationalists", asking it to stop predicting India's disintegration at every opportunity.
Tagging screenshots of the NYT report, Javadekar said on Twitter, "It seems @nytimes consists of the most ardent bhakts of Lord Ram as they seem to find him everywhere. On a serious note, waiting to read @nytimes ground reporting of the violence and religious persecution from Shri Nankana Sahib. Which slogans did they hear there?".
In a series of tweets on Monday slamming the British daily, Javadekar had said, "I know it's a bit too much for you to understand India, but here's an effort: Stop predicting the breaking apart of India at every possible chance you get. India is a diverse democracy and it has always assimilated all differences to emerge stronger."
Masked people brandishing hockey sticks and iron rods unleashed mayhem at the university on Sunday, trawling through corridors and breaking into hostels, including those occupied by women, to brutally thrash students and teachers.
The Delhi Police registered a case against unidentified people for rioting and damaging property. The case was transferred to its Crime Branch.

"We stand in solidarity with the students of India who are resisting fascism. Students on both sides have struggled in the face of repression, be it the abduction of students, on campus violence or charges of sedition on raising slogans for their democratic rights," said a statement from the Pakistani Progressive Students Collective.
A group of students representing the students union, elders and others gathered in front of the Lahore Press Club in the Punjab province of Pakistan, carrying placards and chanted slogans over the action against students in India as well as Pakistan.
The placards read: 'Resist, because violence and vandalism of mob exists beyond borders', 'Students united can never be defeated', 'Drop charges from all students'.
'Fascism is as fascism does' read another placard, including several others in Urdu at the protest.
"In the past two months Indian students across the country (Jamia Millia Islamia, JNU, Aligarh Muslim University and others) have fought valiantly against the fascist demagoguery of Modi sarkar," said the Progressive Students Collective's statement.
The students union also mentioned the name of JNU students union president Aishe Ghosh, referring to the January 5 mob attack in JNU.
"Masked men ransacked the JNU campus and hostels. Aishe Ghosh, the president of JNUSU along with several of her comrades was critically injured in this attack," said the Pakistani students union.
It said the call for solidarity from JNU students and alumni has greatly resonated with them, prompting unwavering support for our progressive counterparts in India.
"Therefore, we call on all our members, allies and sympathisers to join hands with the Collective to stand with the students of India and record our protest against the happenings of January 5 at the Lahore Press Club," said the statement.
Revealing complete awareness of the goings-on in Indian campuses, he continued to say that, "In the name of rescuing Hindu minorities in Pakistan, the fascist Indian government is actually targeting Dalits, Kashmiris and women in India itself."
The Pakistani student leader said it is important for the citizens of India and Pakistan to join and stay together to fight the communal forces, be it RSS-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
"Unless we stand and fight united against such fascist forces in both the countries, there can be no peace in South Asia or the subcontinent," he said in the video.
"We were partitioned in 1947 for no reason by selfish people and vested interests kept us apart. We belong to the same country, same sky and same earth," he said as 'Inquilab Zindabad' chants rent the air.
Wearing woollen clothing to beat Lahore's cold, the Pakistani students crooned the 'Azadi' song frequently sung on the JNU campus and other Indian universities.
Many girl students also participated in the demonstration in support of Indian students.

A student of Ambedkar University, Shivang, was injured when the police started pushing the protesters. His head was bandaged in an ambulance stationed near the Le Meridien hotel, while a few women protesters said they suffered a panic attack during the police action.
Former JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) vice president Sarika Chaudhary said she was thrashed by the police when they were detaining the protesters.
"My spectacles were broken. I lost my slippers and was also injured. I was detained and taken to the Mandir Marg police station," she said.
The scene unfolded with JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh giving a call for a march towards the President of India's residence when the meeting between a delegation of students and teachers and the HRD ministry officials did not turn out to be satisfactory.
The delegation, which met the HRD ministry officials, demanded the removal of Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar from his post.
Soon after the meeting, as Ghosh gave the call for the march, some students were headed towards the Le Meridien hotel on Janpath Road, while others started running towards India Gate.
Police in riot gear resorted to mild force to control the mob that tried to block the traffic on Janpath Road. Using loudspeakers, the police appealed to the crowd to maintain peace.
On being pushed back by the police, the protesters marching towards Le Meridien too started running towards India Gate amid the moving traffic. The police followed them and after some pushing and jostling, managed to contain them on a footpath near the National Archives of India bus stand.
After some time, another group of students started sprinting towards India Gate, but were again pushed back, detained and put in buses and autorickshaws.
An autorickshaw driver drew the policemen's ire when he refused to listen to their direction to stop. The police even slapped a student and hit him with a stick as he resisted them.
The detained students were taken to the Mandir Marg police station.
Meanwhile, several students, including JNSU vice-president Saket Moon, gathered outside Rajiv Chowk metro station's gate number 7 and raised slogans against the Delhi Police.
While the police announced that they had arranged for buses for the students to return to the university campus, the protesters refused the offer and said they would take public transport instead.
Security was also strengthened on the road leading towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan, with barricades erected and water cannons stationed there.

Of the nine, seven belong to left-leaning student organisations while two are affiliated to right-wing students' body, the police said.
Addressing a press conference, DCP (Crime Branch) Joy Tirkey, who is probing the case, said a majority of the students wanted to register for the winter semester from January 1 to 5, but the left-leaning students' bodies were not allowing them to do so.
About the attack on January 5, the DCP said that specific rooms in the university's Periyar hostel were targeted.
Several people including Aishe Ghosh attacked students in the hostel, the police officer claimed.
Ghosh, who was injured in the attack, however, refuted the charge saying the Delhi Police should make public whatever proof it has against her.

"The fee-related matter of JNU has been sorted out following several rounds of discussions with representatives of JNU students and teachers," Nishank said.
"The main demand by students related to increase in service and utility charges and other related issues have now been settled and the continuation of agitation by the students is no longer justified," he added.

Apart from that the same-day release of “Tanhaji” of Ajay Devgn and Kajol also ensured that “Chaapaak” did not get the expected response. But was that all? Hits and flops are a common part of many Bollywood celebs’ life. However, this time around it is the goodwill of Deepika that is at risk as a result of which the brands and endorsements that she represents have also been affected.
Brands Decide To Reduce Visibility Of Deepu’s Ads
The brands that Deepika represents may get affected by this negative movement against the actress which is why many companies have decided to cut down on the visibility of their ads. According to celebrity managers, this incidence might lead to an addition of a new clause in the endorsement deals considering the risks involved when the celebrities decide to take a political stand.
Such an approach can anger the administration and even the die-hard fans may feel desperate to take revenge or dump that celebrity. It is a usual approach of the brands to play safe and stay away from any controversy. So amid the JNU stunt, Deepika stands to lose a lot of new endorsement deals. According to an executive of a media agency, the mid-sized brands have decided to stall their ads carrying Deepika at least for two weeks.
The “Padmavat” actor with a net worth of Rs.103 endorses more than 23 reputed brands including L’Oreal, Vistara Airlines, Axis Bank, Tanishq, and Britannia Good Day.
"Be it JNU, Jamia or other institutions, all of them are very good. I have been saying this from the very beginning, that whosoever will try to bring the dignity of these institutions will not be tolerated at any cost," he said.
This comment comes against the backdrop of incessant protests across the national capital spearheaded by students of the JNU and Jamia. While the JNU protest started against revised hostel fees, soon it steered off to anti-CAA protest which their Jamia counterparts joined as well.
In fact, on December 15 last year, Jamia university area and adjoining New Friends Colony area witnessed large-scale violence against the Citizenship Amendment Act which excludes Muslims of three neighbouring Muslim-majority nations of availing fast track route for obtaining Indian citizenship.
As many as 14 buses had been either burnt or damaged and 20 private vehicles had been torched in that violence. Also 67 people, including 31 police officers, had been injured and a total of 47 persons, including students, had been detained.
Pokhriyal's comment also assumes significance as it comes closely in the heels of Union Home Minister Amit Shah defending the Jamia crackdown, following the December 15 violence.

The actress posted her look as Romi on February 19. It was the tweet that accompanied the post that didn't go down well with social media users.
"To be able to play a small part in a film that captures one of the most iconic moments in sporting history has been an absolute honour.
"Ive seen very closely the role a wife plays in the success of her husband's professional and personal aspirations in my mother and 83 for me in many ways is an ode to every woman who puts her husband's dream before her own...#thisis83," she had captioned the image.

"@deepikapadukone we aren't in '83 anymore. Patriarchy is dying; let's look for those husbands who put their wife's dream before their own, in the new millenia?" said one.

"We have recieved the sanction from the Delhi government to prosecute Kanhaiya Kumar and others in this case," a senior police officer told IANS.
The Delhi Police Special Cell on February 19 wrote to the Delhi Home Secretary requesting to "expedite" the process of grant of sanction in the JNU sedition case involving former JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar.
In a letter written by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, Pramod Singh Kushwaha to the Deputy Secretary, Home, he said, "It is therefore requested to expedite the process to accord prosecution sanction under
Section 196 CrPC as required for offence under Chapter VI of the IPC i.e. Section 124A IPC."
A Delhi court had asked the Delhi government to file a status report relating to the issue of pendency of sanction in the JNU sedition case to prosecute student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and others.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Purshottam Pathak has also directed Delhi Police to send a reminder to the government.
"A new government has been formed, send a reminder," the judge said.
The court has now kept the matter for hearing on April 3.
On the previous date of hearing, the Arvind Kejriwal government had informed the court that no decision had been taken yet. The reply also states that the file is pending before the Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, who is also handling the Home portfolio.
The public prosecutor has filed a reply by submitting a letter in the court.
On February 9, 2016, "anti-national" slogans were allegedly raised at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus during a programme called to protest against the death sentence handed out to Afzal Guru, a convict in the 2002 Parliament attack.
The 1,200-page charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police Crime Branch names 10 JNU students, including Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and seven Kashmiri students, as the main accused in the case.
The charge sheet says the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) retrieved the SMS sent by Umar Khalid to Kanhaiya Kumar to arrive at Sabarmati Dhaba, JNU, as their permission (to hold the protest) had been cancelled by the University administration.
The final pages of the charge sheet also confirm the presence of Kashmiri students during the protest and that they were in contact with Umar Khalid.
