The residents who are already reeling under severe loss due to the flood last month, anticipated more loss.
Many villages under five panchayats of Balasore Sadar and Basta blocks are the sufferers of floods. There will be another flood if the water level of Jalaka does not recede in the next two days, reports said.
Furthermore, standing paddy crops on acres of farmlands were destroyed following a breach in the Indravati Mega Lift canal near Dangaripada under Jaipatna block in Kalahandi district in the wee hours of Monday.
A 15-foot-long breach developed on the embankment of the canal inundating farmlands and nearby villages. This has added to the woes of farmers who are already reeling under severe losses.
On being informed, Indravati authorities rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. They closed the Mangalpur gate and assured of necessary compensation to the locals after meeting them.
On the other hand, parts of Gajapati district have been experiencing severe rainfall since the last two days. At least five houses collapsed at Kujasingh panchayat under Gumma block. Similarly, Kendrapada recorded 35mm, Khordha experienced 33mm rainfall followed by Puri with 25mm, Bhadrak with 21mm, Cuttack with 20mm and Balasore with 19mm. The State's capital city recorded 14mm rainfall.
According to the IMD, the Cyclonic storm Jawad has weakened into a Depression and will further reduce to a well-marked lower pressure area tonight.
As per report at least four people in the State have died so far in rain-related mishaps. On the other hand, panic has triggered among villagers in low lying areas as seven rivers in the State are in spate due to the heavy rainy spell.
The Brahmani River is flowing above the danger level at Akhuapada while the water level of Jalaka River has crossed the danger mark at Mathani. However, rest of the rivers including Mahanadi, Ib River, Devi, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Bansadhara are flowing below the danger mark.
Several villages in Jajpur, Karanjia, Paradeep and Sonepur have been marooned in the rain water. Communication of these villages has been disrupted and people are reportedly stranded in their houses.
According to reports, an octogenarian identified as Kailash Samal of Nuasahi in Ganeshpur area was killed while his wife sustained injuries after wall of their house collapsed on them in Aul area of Kendrapara district.
In another incident, a man was killed while his wife and daughter sustained grievous injuries in Jaleswar area of Balasore district. The incident took place at Bhadua village of Kalika Panchayat under Raibania Police limits following constant downpours. The mother-daughter duo has been rushed to Hathigada Community Health Centre for treatment.
Similarly, due to incessant rain in Puri, a wall collapsed in Kumbharapada area of the district leading to the death of Rasananda Bisoi, secretary of 'Kumbhakar Nijog'. According to information, Bisoi was taken to hospital in a critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries. Following the incident, a pall of gloom descended on the family of Bisoi.
In Mayurbhanj, a woman was killed after the wall of her kitchen collapsed while she was cooking at her home in Khuntapal village in Rasgovindpur block. Another woman sustained injuries after a wall collapsed on her at Basantpura Village under Ghasipura block in Keonjhar district.
