Protesting lack of measures by the authorities to put a check on illegal sale of liquor, the women residents of the village tied the youth to a tree after he was caught carrying a box of country-made liquor.
The women residents have alleged that many youths of the village are involved in illicit liquor trade in the area and despite repeated complaints no action has been taken by police to nab the youths involved in illicit liquor trade in the region.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in the area for some time. After getting information, Banasada police reached the spot and rescued the youth.
Shouting slogan like 'Jiban Chanhu, Mada Nuhen', hundreds of women of the panchayat took out the protest rally from Dakhina Kuanrpur to Gobardhanpur.
They alleged that due to presence of a liquor outlet at Dakhina Kuanrpur, the male members of their families drink liquor everyday and pick up quarrel with them. Even the youths and educated people of the panchayat were gradually getting habituated to drink, they added.
The protestors further alleged that despite repeated appeals to local police station and district administration to take measures to shut liquor the outlet and check the illegal sale of alcohol in the panchayat, no action is being taken.
The women threatened to gherao all the offices of the district administration in Nilagiri and the Collectorate, unless action is taken against the liquor mafias at the earliest.
"We want the illegal sale of alcohol in our area to stop. Despite repeated appeals to the concerned district administration and police, our complaints have remained unheard. If this trade continues, we will intensify the protest," threatened a protestor, Madhusmita Behera.
