A resident of the nondescript Kardapal village in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, Kunni runs a silk spinning centre. What makes her stand apart from others is the fact that she uses only solar power to run the centre.
Besides earning a living from this centre, she is also giving training and employment to local girls.
“She trains tribal women to spin silk on a solar-powered reeling machine. Due to the solar machine, these tribal women do not have to bear the burden of electricity bills, and they are earning income. This is the very boon of Sun God's solar energy. The more the boon and the blessings spread, the better it is. Therefore, I urge you to join this and add others too,” said the PM.
Kunni’s joy knew no bound after hearing the PM speaking about her. “We are living in tribal area where round the clock supply of electricity is a dream. This is why we decided to use solar power. In case of solar power, the investment is one-time but we get lifelong benefits. We are no longer worried about power cuts”
The PM also lauded IIT Bhubaneswar for the portable ventilator it has developed.
“A team from IIT Bhubaneswar has developed a portable ventilator for newborn babies. It runs on battery and can be used easily in remote areas. This can prove to be very helpful in saving the lives of babies who are born prematurely,” said the PM.
He further said, “Be it electric mobility, drone technology, 5G, many of our students are engaged in developing new technology related to them. Several IITs are also working together on a multilingual project that makes learning local languages easier.”
Sharing thoughts on the Mann Ki Baat programme, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Vice President Baijayant Panda said, “Mann Ki Baat programme is observed on the last Sunday of every month. It has been a source of inspiration for crores of people. It is not a political programme. Modiji gives lots of information for the benefit of the country. He brings those youths, women and tribal people who are trying to take the country to a higher level to the fore. It is a source of encouragement for us. We the crores of workers feel it is our duty not only to hear Mann Ki Baat but also to propagate the message by incorporating local people so that such examples come from every corner of the country and take the country ahead by their efforts.”

The girl, R Likhita Sarma, who will graduate this year at the institution, was selected for Adobe in the campus selection at Rs 39 lakh annual salary. The Telangana girl has been offered the highest amount ever offered to a student in the Bhubaneswar campus since its first batch graduated in 2012.
Prior to this, the highest package offered to any student from the institution was Rs 38 lakh in 2016, while last year, the highest offer grabbed by another boy was Rs 34 lakh.
However, as per reports, students from the IITs in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Roorkee and Guwahati have been offered annual pay packages of Rs 1 crore earlier.
Apart from Sarma, four others have been offered an annual package of Rs 31.5 lakh by Goldman Sachs, while more than 50 per cent students have got offers above Rs 20 lakh, sources added.
According to sources, the IITs will offer admission to 11,998 seats next year - a rise of almost 1000 seats over and above the existing 10,998 seats in various institutions.
The new branches which would increase their seats include IIT Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Mandi, Ropar, Indore, Gandhinagar and Jodhpur.
However, significant rise in the number of seats may not be witnessed in older IITs like Delhi, Bombay and Kharagpur.
Sources further added that the premiere institutes would earmark special seats for female candidates from next year.
In 2014, the number of vacant seats in various IITs stood at three; the number rose to 50 in 2015, while it rose further to 96 in 2016. This year, even after seven rounds of counselling, 121 seats lay vacant across 23 IITs.
Subsequently, to sort out the situation, the Ministry has asked all IITs to consider ways including the option of scrapping unpopular courses from the institutes.
A number of IITs hiked their intake by 400 seats in June this year. A new proposal for further increasing the seats will be sent soon by the senate of the new IITs to the Joint Admission Board (JAB), which will then take a decision on the matter.
Earlier this year during a JAB meeting, the Ministry recommended a hike in the seats allotted to women to 14 per cent from the current eight per cent of the total seats in IITs across the country.
She submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik demanding action against the professor.
Prior to it, the woman had visited the State BJP office and submitted a memorandum addressed to Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and State BJP President Basant Panda.
Earlier on Friday, the woman, hailing from West Bengal, had lodged an FIR at Mahila police station here alleging sexual harassment by IIT Bhubaneswar Professor PD Reddy and some officials of the institute for helping him.
The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of IIT Bhubaneswar had earlier conducted a probe on the allegations and termed the allegations baseless in its report. The woman had however challenged the report’s veracity.
The woman, hailing from West Bengal, has lodged FIR against Professor PD Reddy for allegedly sexually harassing her and some officials of the institute for helping him.
IIT Bhubaneswar officials had termed the allegations levelled by the student as ‘baseless’. In a press release, the authorities had claimed that the girl was admitted to IIT Bhubaneswar in July 2011 and brought the allegation of sexual harassment on October 6, 2016.
“The matter was then referred to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). However, she was not satisfied with the report of IIC and has now raised her voice once again for justice,” the release had stated.
“There is nothing pending with the institute and all statutory requirements have been completed holistically,” it had added.
Challenging the report of the ICC, the woman has lodged the complaint at the Mahila police station.
Earlier in July, she had sent a notice to the Director of IIT through her lawyer in this regard. She had also written to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking their intervention.
After getting information about the incident, deputy secretary of Skill Development and Technical Education Department PK Sarangi had sought an immediate report from the IIT Director in connection with the case.

She had also mentioned that even after approaching all top IIT officials no one helped her as the professor is an influential person.

The PhD scholar Asutosh Acharya of IIT Bhubaneswar after meeting Khurania said, “Sir has a very positive attitude, he inspired me to grow in future and encouraged me for my achievement in tracing the mobile thief.”
Asutosh further informed, “The Commissioner has already called Inspector-In-Charge of Saheed Nagar police station to nab the thief within two days.”
Asutosh’s phone had been stolen on July 16 morning from the hostel room of a friend in Utkal University campus where the former had stayed overnight. A complaint had been lodged at Saheed Nagar police station and even the DCP had been informed about it.
As the police investigation was going on at a slow pace Asutosh decided to trace the mobile on his own and did it through Mi Cloud facility that linked his handset with his email account.
Asutosh found out that the handset was with a person residing at Haridaposhi village under Tigiria police limits in Cuttack district. He had even shared the information with Saheed Nagar police.
But as the police was late in taking action, Asutosh visited the village with some friends and contacted the Tigiria police who allegedly misbehaved with them. The matter was informed to Saheed Nagar police and when they called the Tigiria police the latter did not receive it.
Later in the morning Asutosh with help of a local media person visited the village again and contacted the person, a mobile shop owner, who initially had the mobile. The shop owner proved his innocence by showing video of the thief which shows how the latter is bargaining to sell the mobile and agreed to help to nab the actual thief.
In the mean time, the thief had sold the phone to another person who even co-operated in finding the thief. Unfortunately, the thief fled from the village sensing danger but the phone was recovered.
“We found out the thief is residing at Vani Vihar slum and visits the village in every two to three days, sells stolen mobile phones and returns. It will definitely be a reward for me if the thief is nabbed as phones of many persons will be recovered. One more request is that police should be smart to nab such thieves,” added Asutosh.
Asutosh Acharya, PhD student of IIT Bhubaneswar, was on a visit to one of his friends residing at Utkal University hostel on June 16 where his phone was stolen. He reported the incident at Saheed Nagar police station, but not satisfied with the police investigation he decided to trace the phone himself.
The phone had Mi Cloud facility that Asutosh had linked with his email. As the thief was not able to unlock the phone, he had given it at a mobile repairing centre. The mobile shop owner had inserted his SIM in the phone to unlock it when an alert message was sent to Asutosh’s email.
Asutosh first tracked the number on WhatsApp and then on Facebook and was able to find the location of the shop owner who was from Tigiria in Cuttack district. Later, he became Facebook friend with the shop owner and extracted the details of the thief by posing as a police officer.
“After going to the police station for two days, I felt that nothing can be done here so I tried it on my own. Fortunately my phone had Mi Cloud facility which I had linked with my email. If anyone tries to insert new SIM into my phone, the number will be displayed in Mi Cloud. After getting the number, I got the photo of the person through WhatsApp and got his name through Facebook. The person with my phone was not the actual thief but he was a mobile shop owner in a village called Haridaposhi under Tigiria police limits in Cuttack district, who had received the phone from the thief. When I called him he first tried to mislead me but after I threatened that police is tracking him and told him about his details, he was frightened and promised to return my phone,” said Asutosh.
“The police is working at such a slow pace that anyone can destroy the phone in the mean time or send it somewhere else,” added Asutosh.
Meanwhile, sources said the police in its report has mentioned that it is still tracing the stolen mobile phone.

The first year students examination will take a month and half more due to late admission and late starting of the semester across all the IIT's across the country.
The spring end semester examinations of 2020-21 has been completed for all students on May 15.
Last year in March 2020, before lockdown was announced, the institute switched to online education without any gap due to prior planning, innovations and execution, a senior official said.
The institute also developed a very unique and innovative online method to hold comprehensive pen and paper exams, trained its faculty and applied the same very successfully to hold the end-semester examination, in May 2020, he said.
"Due to the very tough pandemic, the theory classes for the entire 2020-21 too were conducted online, timely for all the students. For science and engineering students hands- on laboratory training is important and carrying on the same during the pandemic posed a serious problem," said Prof Raja Kumar, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar.
He said the lab courses were organized for students with both (i) physical presence with hands on experience and (ii) online by live streaming or pre-recorded video of demonstration of experiments performed on the lab table by the faculty members.
In the later method students are provided with the live video streaming of the demonstration of an experiment during the lab class as per the timetable, he said.
All students except for the freshers were brought to the campus and they had their full lab sessions with physical presence in the campus during FebruaryApril 2021 very successfully.
Due to the onset of the second wave of the pandemic in a severe form, the lab practice with physical presence of the freshers has been postponed and it will be completed as soon as it is conducive, the director said, adding that even the extra academic activity (EAA) including Yoga classes and practice of the first year BTech students could be done online in a very innovative and unique way during the pandemic.
Project and research seminars, evaluations, of UG, PG and PhD programes have been conducted over online platforms, he said.
Stating that maintaining good health and protection from the pandemic is more important than running the academics in standards, Prof Rajakumar said: "IIT Bhubaneswar campus has been kept Covid-free except for 5 cases in September 2021 and up to 7 cases in April 2021 and 5 cases in May 2021, through a very strict and spirited implementation of the Covid protocols, awareness campaigns and participation of the whole fraternity in the same."
These standards of protection could be achieved, even as the essential services of the campus including offices like that of the Director were never closed during the pandemic.
"Though the situation in Odisha has been better, nearly 90 per cent of our students come from all places in the country, up to 2000 migrant workers stayed in the campus, and the challenges have been like anywhere else," he said.

Vice-Chancellor of NIT Rourkela, Pradeep Kumar Das also said that the 10 per cent quota for EWS students has already been implemented in the institution for the current academic session.
Earlier, the HRD Ministry had written to all the states to implement the same in state-run educational institutions. However, when asked about the EWS quota, the top official of the Department of Higher Education, Odisha, refused to reply but admitted that a decision in this regard is yet to be taken.
"The State government should implement the reservation as it is a Central provision. If premier institutes like IIT and NIT are implementing the quota for EWS candidates, there should not be any problem in implementing it in state govt-run institutions. I hope the Odisha government will implement it soon," said an educationist, Kamal Prasad Mohapatra.
Sivan will address the students of IIT, Bhubaneswar in the community centre of the institute at Argul, Jatni. He will attend the function as the chief guest, an official release said.
This is the first visit of Sivan to the Odisha capital after the launch of the Chadrayaan 2 mission to the moon.
The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) India University Rankings 2020 launched the first top 100 Universities of India. The IIT Bhubaneswar has been ranked at 20th position, improving from its previous position of 21st in the last ranking, the official said.
The British higher education analysts QS has ranked the higher education institutions in India on the basis of eight parameters that have different weightages.
The eight parameters are academic reputation (30 per cent), employer reputation (20 per cent), faculty student ratio (20 per cent), staff with PhD (10 per cent), Papers per faculty (10 per cent, citation per paper (5per cent), international faculty (2.5 per cent) and international students (2.5 per cent).
IIT Bhubaneswar Director Prof R V Raja Kumar said the strategic initiatives taken by the institute in the recent times have not only fostered the development of the Institute, but also resulted in a significant rise in Institutes ranking performance, indicating that our plans are right and we are on the right track.
"The vision of IIT Bhubaneswar is to be globally well respected for producing outstanding graduates and generating new knowledge. In order to fulfil this dream, we aim to figure among the top 50-100 best Institutions in the world, as soon as possible.
"We have been marching ahead and constantly striving to raise the standards of the operations of the Institute on all fronts such as quality of education including teaching, learning, research and faculty and scaling up the current infrastructure in this endeavour," said Kumar.
The director said " We are happy about the ranking performance of the institute. However, a lot more needs to be done in the years to come".
As per Times Higher Education (THE) World University rankings 2020, the institute has been ranked 601-800 among 1,396 institutes across the world and 10th in India among 56 institutes, where it has been ranked 7th in citation scores in India, the director said.
This method can be used for holding all types of examinations, including class tests and end-semester examinations of an institute, the premier institute said in a statement.
This method uses the currently available commercial systems such as the Wheebox as a part of it.
The new method will overcome several limitations of holding only computer-based tests, lacking the robustness, reliability of invigilation and connection faced by the commercially available online examination systems, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) said.
According to RV Raja Kumar, Director, IIT-Bhubaneswar, the proposed online examination system is robust and can be used for holding tests of wide-ranging nature from simple computer-based ones to detailed conventional examinations.
The system uses a virtual examination hall, actual invigilators, question paper distribution online and submission/reception of soft copies of answer books which may be printed, if needed, he said.
The system uses two or more network connections for the reliability of the connection and additional facility for proctoring for reliable invigilation.
Unlike in systems where a student has to come to an examination centre equipped with computers, in the proposed system, a student can take the examination from home or anywhere across the globe, Kumar said.
The institute has successfully tested the entire system by holding a mock test involving about 240 students stationed across the country with question papers of 31 subjects and 20 invigilators.
It was found that the tests can be held successfully and effectively as long a student has at least one of the two connections working at any time during the examination, Kumar added.

Every degree rise in temperature corresponds to a 0.99 per cent decrease in the number of cases and an increase in doubling time by approximately 1.13 days, implying a slowing down of spread, said the study titled "Covid-19 spread in India and its dependence on temperature and relative humidity".
The study, led by V. Vinoj, Assistant Professor of the School of Earth, Ocean and Climatic Sciences at IIT-Bhubaneswar, examined Covid-19 outbreak patterns and cases in 28 states between April and June.
Particularly, they focused on the relationship between Covid-19 spread and environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity, specific humidity, and solar radiation.
The results showed that temperature and relative humidity have a significant impact on the disease growth rate and doubling time, according to the abstract of the study posted on ResearchGate, a professional network for scientists and researchers.
The study is currently at pre-print stage and yet to be peer-reviewed.
An analysis for relative humidity revealed that more moisture leads to a higher growth rate of Covid-19 cases and reduced doubling time, said the study.
Lower specific humidity and higher surface-reaching solar radiation reduced the spread and increased the doubling time similar to that of temperature, the results showed.
The researchers noted that past respiratory viral pandemics of the 21st century revealed seasonality in environmental factors to play a role in the dynamics of their spread.
The study comes at a time when daily Covid-19 cases are setting new records.
India's total coronavirus cases have already surpassed 1 million, with a record 38,902 new cases reported in the past 24 hours.
With 543 new deaths, the total death toll stood at 26,816 on Sunday.

So far the campus has been COVID free except for 5 cases in September, 2020 and now some in the isolated quarantine centre, IIT, Bhubaneswar, Director, Prof RRV Rajakumar said in a statement on Sunday.
The statement said IIT Bhubaneswar nurtures preservation of academic life despite the pandemic prevailing around by maintaining safety measures to the entire fraternity.
It said the institute has invited students also to the campus to have hands-on experimentation with the practical classes, while the regular teaching is going through the online process.
The students are being brought to the campus in phase-wise process and so far IIT, Bhubaneswar have about 50 per cent of senior undergraduate and postgraduate students on campus with 100 per cent of research students, it said.
Anticipating that a few of the incoming students from across the country would carry COVID cases, the authorities have made a prior RT-PCR test and 15 days quarantine mandatory. Only after quarantine period, the incoming students are allowed to mix with the mainstream students.
During the quarantining period, the student health is monitored and food is delivered in isolated room of a student, it said, while describing the measures taken to prevent spread of the infection in the campus.
In the first three batches, there was not even a single COVID case reported while in the 4th batch that arrived at the quarantine centre of the institute from March 20 to March 22, three students' tested COVID-19 positive after their arrival.
All in the entire floor of the quarantine centre were tested and 7 more students (mainly because of travelling /contacting the first three) were found positive. All 10 students are now in the isolation centre of the institute and are being taken care of, the statement said.
"In view of the positive cases upon entry, the institute postponed the arrival of next batch of students scheduled for April 4. The institute is not anticipating anymore cases in the quarantine centre and certainly not in the mainstream, because of the strict observation of the COVID safety protocols and SOP," the director said.
Other than the isolation and quarantine centre, the institute is free of COVID and everything has been functioning normally including the construction activity, the statement said, adding that the director inspected the construction sites on Sunday.
