Two people from Karnataka are first in India to have tested positive for the Omicron variant of Covid-19. This information was shared by the Health Ministry on Thursday. The patients are two men aged 66 and 46 whose identities have not been disclosed to protect their privacy.
The sample was collected from a 46-year-old person on November 22 and sent to the NCBS lab. His result has also shown that he is positive for Omicron virus. He was kept in home isolation first and later shifted to hospital.
"It is too early to assess whether Omicron causes more severe infection or less compared to variants, including Delta," the official told the press conference quoting the World Health Organisation which has designated the new variant as a 'variant of concern'.
