The Supreme Court on Friday noted that freebies announced by political parties may push the state towards imminent bankruptcy, as it framed preliminary issues which require further deliberation before concrete orders are passed, and referred the pleas against freebies to a 3-judge bench.
The top court said the issues raised by parties require extensive hearing and looking at the complexity of issues and the prayer to overrule Subramaniam Balaji, "we refer the matters to a three-judge bench".
The bench, also comprising Justices Hima Kohli and C.T. Ravikumar, noted, freebies, etc., can destroy the economy.
Moderating the debate, Hilal Ahmed, associate professor at the CSDS, questioned the panelists about the freebies.
A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana and comprising Justice Krishna Murari noted that irrational freebies are definitely an issue of concern and there should be financial discipline.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana asked the Centre, to find out from the Finance Commission, if there is a possibility of curbing state governments and political parties from promising and distributing irrational freebies to induce voters.
"This expressway will not only give speed to the vehicles, but will also accelerate the industrial progress of the entire Bundelkhand," he said.
