There are over 50 houses apart from Murmu's dwelling in this tribal-dominated village. However, the village that recently is grabbing the headlines, is yet to get an electricity connection.
I am extremely thrilled. It has been a part of our ideology. My late father PS Sangma had once said that one day a tribal person will become the President of India. It's a dream come true for all of us. We are supporting her candidature, said Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma on NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu who filed her nominations today.
The BJP leader also added that if Congress really cares for the people of Odisha, it needs to get over its thought and extend support to the tribal woman (Murmu).
The presidential election would be held on July 18 to elect a successor to incumbent Ram Nath Kovind and the counting of votes would be on July 21.
Among others, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath were present at the Parliament building during the filing of nomination by Murmu.
The YSR Congress led by Jagan Mohan Reddy has also announced its support to the candidature of Murmu.
As Murmu is inspired by the RSS ideology, Congress will never support her candidature for the position of a constitutional head, he said.
Water Resources, Commerce and Transport Minister Tukuni Sahu and Law Minister Jagannath Sarka have signed the nomination papers of Murmu and will be present during the filing of the nomination tomorrow.
Several Delhi BJP leaders, including state president Adesh Gupta, party MPs Manoj Tiwari and Ramesh Bidhuri, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, welcomed Murmu at the airport.
Traditional dance performed at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to greet NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu. Murmu left for Delhi today and she will be filing her nomination for Presidential Elections tomorrow, June 24th.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also made an appeal to all MLAs of Odisha to support Murmu’s candidature.
A resident of tribal-dominated Uparbeda village under Kusumi Tehsil of Mayurbhanj district, Murmu passed her matriculation from the Unit II Girl’s High School in 1974. She studied there for three years (Class 8, 9 & 10) before joining Rama Devi Women’s college for her higher studies.
In a tweet, Patnaik wrote, “Appeal all the members of Odisha Legislative Assembly, cutting across party lines, to extend unanimous support to elect the daughter of Odisha - Smt Draupadi Murmu to the country’s highest office
"It’s a matter of pride for 104 crore Odisha people. We should thank our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Parliamentary Board of BJP for picking up Draupadi as the President candidate”, said BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi.
