The cyclonic circulation over East-Central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood is likely to take the form of a low pressure in the next 48 hours. Under its influence, moderate to heavy rain is expected to lash coastal and interior parts of the State till October 9.
There will be a slight change in weather conditions after October 9, added the IMD.
"The presence of a cyclonic circulation can be seen at Odisha border and the low pressure situation will be clear after data analysis. Heavy rains are likely to lash coastal areas like Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Ganjam and Nayagarh within the next 48 hours. Later, it may shift to interior Odisha or other parts of the State," said IMD's Regional Center Director Sarat Chandra Sahu.

“An anti-cyclone is developing over Central Odisha and Kolkata region for which there is movement of water vapour from the Sea towards the landmass. On account of this, rainfall along with hailstorms is likely to occur in some place of North Odisha,” Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu said.
As per the release, yesterday’s low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal off north Odisha-West Bengal coast lay centred over north Chhattisgarh and its neighbourhood at about 8.30 AM today with associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to 3.1 km above the mean sea level.
Meanwhile, a fresh low pressure area has been formed over northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast today with the associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric level.
Under its influence, widespread rainfall will occur at most places over Odisha while heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur at one or two places over interior and coastal Odisha during next 24 hours.
The fishermen have been advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea in the coastal pockets as surface wind from northwest direction with speed reaching 30-40 kmph and gusting up to 50 kmph will raise the tidal wave up to 3-4 metres, the release added.
The cyclonic circulation is likely to further intensify into a low pressure and several districts including Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara will experience heavy rainfall.
Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre Director, HR Biswas informed, “Scattered rainfall is likely in few places in coastal districts from today while heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places like Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara.”

“Light to moderate rainfall may occur at many places in coastal districts on October 29,” added Biswas.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea in view of rough sea conditions in the next two days (October 29 and 30).
According to the Met department, the cyclonic circulation is likely to take the form of a low pressure in the next 24 hours and cause light to moderate rainfall in the State till July 28. The Met officials also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in some places in northern and coastal parts of the State.
“Most of the places in Odisha will witness light to moderate rainfall in the next 24 hours. This will continue for the next three days and some isolated places will also receive heavy to very heavy rainfall,” said HR Biswas, Director, Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre.
The Met department’s prediction is likely to bring some relief for the farmers as Odisha has recorded 32 per cent rainfall deficit from June 1 to July 24.
As per IMD and Skymet analyses, Monsoon has become active in Odisha following the formation of a fresh Cyclonic Circulation over the Northwest Bay of Bengal. The forecast is this system will remain intact and develop into a Low Pressure Area in the next 24 hours. For which, fairly widespread rain and thundershower activities will lash Odisha during the coming days, the weather inferences observed.
The prediction is places like Titilagarh, Nabarangpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Angul etc are likely to experience fair amount of rainfall today. But the intensity for most of the areas will oscillate between light and moderate along with a few heavy spells, that may occur during the next 48 hours, says the Skymet analysis.
However, as of now, we do not foresee any possibility of flooding, says a Skymet release. But the heavy rainfall will lead to high waterlogging in many places. The sea condition analysis did not indicate of the system developing into a depression.
It needs mentioning here is the rainfall activity was minimal over Odisha during the last few days. But the revival now may change this scenario, feel met experts.
An analysis of the satellite pictures further reveal that till 11 AM today, heavy rainfall has been experienced in many places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Dhenkanal. Rainfall reports have also come in from places in districts like Cuttack, Angul and Khurda. Monsoon drizzle has also been experienced in the Capital city till 11am.
As per IMD reports, coastal places like Jagatsinghpur, Bhubaneswar, Ganjam etc will experience around 4 mm rain per hour today. Whereas, districts like Nabrangpur, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Nuapada, Subarnapur and Boudh will receive rainfall in the range of 4-15mm/hour. Especially, some places in the districts of Bargarh, Sambalpur, Subarnapaur, Angul will be witnessing rainfall in the range of 7-15mm/hour today.
As per the latest forecast, the low pressure area is associated with the cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above sea level moving in the southwest direction. It is likely to become a well-marked low pressure area in the next 48 hours.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall (Orange warning) is likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of north coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Keonjhar, Bolangir, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nayagarh and Puri tomorrow.
Similarly, extremely heavy rainfall is also likely in Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Kalahandi.
Several parts of Odisha will witness rainfall activity in the next three days. Parts of south interior Odisha, Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur will also experience heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
As the sea condition is likely to remain rough, fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea along Odisha coast and northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.
Keeping in view the IMD's forecast of heavy rainfall, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) today directed the collectors of concerned districts to remain alert and take all possible steps to meet any possible situation that may arise due to intense rainfall.
As per the latest weather bulletin, moderate thundershower and lightning is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundergarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Boudh, Sonepur, Kandhamal, Jharsuguda, Angul, Keonjhar and Nuapada.
People in these districts have been advised to remain alert in view of the thunderstorm between till 10:15 AM.
On the other hand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued heavy rain alert (Orange warning) for several districts of Odisha in view of a low pressure formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Bangladesh coast.
As per the IMD's yesterday forecast, the low pressure area is associated with the cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above sea level moving in the southwest direction. It is likely to become a well-marked low pressure area in the next 48 (since yesterday) hours.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall (Orange warning) is likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of north coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Keonjhar, Bolangir, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nayagarh and Puri tomorrow (August 13), the IMD had said.
However, the heavy rainfall will not trigger any flood, though high scale of waterlogging is predicted in low lying areas in the districts.
As per the flood bulletin released by Office of Special Relief Commissioner, rainfall amount in most river basins in Odisha has not been very significant, except Phulbani under the lower Mahanadi Basin that has recorded 10cm rainfall as on today.
The forecast says today Umerkote in the Kolab basin may witness around 20cm rainfall. Despite such a significant precipitation, there seems no flood danger as the water level is stagnant there.
The SRC bulletin reveals that water level has been measured as rising in Brahmani river at two places viz, Talcher and Panposh. And Baitarani river water level is also rising in Champua. As there are predictions of fair amount of rainfall in the upper catchment of Brahmani, near Rourkela, there is possibility of inundation in low lying areas along the Brahmani river at Panposh and Talcher.
With predictions of around 100mm rainfall in Keonjhar district today, there is likelihood of a rise in water level in the river at Champua, and as a consequence inundation of low lying area is possible, says the SRC bulletin. The State Government has alerted the district authorities of the places, it added.
As per the rain forecasts by IMD and Skymet for the week, Odisha will witness dry spell on 73rd Independence day and the spell will extend up to August 17. Fair amount of rainfall will be taking place in Odisha, especially in Gajapati, Rayagada, Ganjam, parts of Sundergarh, Keonjhar and adjoining Mayurbhanj, on August 18 and 19, the forecast reads.
Meanwhile, the live storage positions of major reservoirs in Odisha have shown improvement. The live storage position with respect to Full Reservoir Level (FRL) at Hirakud improved to 49 per cent. Except Rengali, the live storage position in other reservoirs are in the range of 46-80 per cent as on Tuesday.
In addition to the likely development of a cyclonic circulation over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal (near Odisha coast) by around August 22, which will bring widespread rainfall in Odisha on August 23-24, a Low Pressure Area (LOPAR) is likely to form in east-central Bay of Bengal (BoB) by around August 27. The new system will enhance heavy rainfall activities in Odisha during the last week of August.
As per the data available with IMD, while the development of a fresh cyclonic circulation near Odisha coast on August 22 will see an enhanced rainfall over the State during the next two days (August 23 & 24), a LOPAR will form in the east-central BoB and north Andaman Sea on around August 27 & 28.
An analysis of IMD weather models shows high relative vorticity (spinning of air) in the area in the BoB. Strong Low level convergence (Net horizontal airflow to an area at surface level in lower atmosphere) of air and upper divergence (Net outflow of air in upper atmosphere) are also observed. These air-flow conditions point to making of a LOPAR in the region.
IMD predictions have therefore forecast normal rainfall over Odisha during the remaining weeks in Odisha, though the rainfall amount will reduce in most parts of India.
Meanwhile, since the curvature of a trough ( an elongated U-shaped low pressure area over land) originates from the current LOPAR over East Uttar Pradesh and passes through Bihar, Odisha , North Andhra to Tamil Nadu, heavy rainfall is likely in all districts in south interior Odisha, with very heavy rainfall at some places in Rayagada and Gajapati districts. Rainfall has also been predicted at some places in the north interior districts like Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Nuapada and Bolangir.
However, the Skymet warning shows along with rain, lightning will also strike places like Dharakote, Sanakhemundi, Sheragarh, Digapahandi, Patrapada, Chikti and Berhampur in Ganjam district and at many places in Nayagarh, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Sambalpur, Angul, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts.
This will be the third instance of low pressure area triggering downpour in the state in August.
Several areas of south and west Odisha had encountered flash floods owing to incessant rainfall earlier this month.
In the past two days, too, the state has experienced rainfall of varied intensity.
Vehicular traffic was disrupted in Bhubaneswar on Friday as rain lashed Nayapalli, JaydevVihar, AcharyaVihar, Baramunda, GGP Colony, Jharpara and Palasuni areas here.
Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation, over northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha and West Bengal coasts, a low pressure area is likely to form over Odisha and its neighbourhood in the next 36 hours.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely to occur in Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Puri districts till Saturday, the meteorological centre said.
Heavy rainfall is also expected in Kendrapara, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Sundargarh, Angul, Khordha, Ganjam, among other areas during the period.
Torrential downpour may also batter places in Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir and Nuapada districts on Sunday and Monday.
Squally wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to prevail along Odisha coast and adjoining northwest and west central Bay of Bengal, the MeT Centre said.
As sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough, fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea on Saturday and Sunday, it added.
“Under the impact of the cyclonic circulation, monsoon is active in Odisha. Several parts of north Odisha will experience light to moderate rainfall while heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul and Deogarh districts in next 24 hours,” said director of the regional meteorological centre, HR Biswas.
Biswas further informed that heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Balasore, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khurda, Jajpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Bargarh, Sonepur and Koraput in the next 24 hours.
Several parts of Odisha experienced heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours. Hemagiri in Sundergarh district recorded highest rainfall of 156mm, followed by 134.6 mm in Jharsuguda and 103 mm in Sambalpur.
As the weather condition will remain rough, fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours.
“Though the intensity of rainfall will decrease after 48 hours, light to moderate rainfall will occur at several parts of the State,” Biswas added.
Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, HR Biswas informed that a cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu Coast.
And as a consequence, a Low Pressure Area (LOPAR) is likely to form over southwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal off north Tamilnadu-south Andhra Pradesh coast during next 48 hours (means by October 23).
Under its influence, Odisha will witness heavy rainfall at many places on October 24 and 25. Isolated places in Odisha, especially southern, will experience heavy rainfall on October 23, says the latest IMD release.
As per local Met Director HR Biswas, several places of Odisha, mostly in south and north Odisha districts, will experience heavy rainfall for a span of three days from October 23.
"Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at several places of Gajapati, Rayagada, Ganjam, Puri, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Nuapada and Bolangir on October 23," he observed and added that thunderstorm and lightning activities will continue in isolated parts of the State till October 27 (Diwali Day).
Significantly, the cyclonic circulation present over east central Arabian Sea has developed into a LOPAR, and it will develop into a depression by tomorrow. The models of country's premier ocean institute INCOIS (Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, however, suggest the depression to develop into a cyclonic system and will head towards Oman.
As per the latest weather bulletin, a cyclonic circulation lies over Jharkhand and neighbourhood. The cyclonic circulation over Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood now extends up to 2.1 km above the mean sea level.
The east-west trough now runs from the cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan and neighbourhood to the cyclonic circulation over Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood across Madhya Pradesh and extends up to 0.9 km above the mean sea level.
Under its impact, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is likely to occur at several places over the districts of north interior Odisha, costal and south interior Odisha tomorrow.
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Gajapati and Kandhamal tomorrow.
Orange Warning (Valid From 0830 Hrs Of May 31 till 0830 hrs of June 1):
Districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angulm Ganjam, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khurda, Deogarh likely to experience thunderstorm with lightning and squally wind (50-60 kmph). Heavy rainfall also likely at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Kandhamal, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Ganjam, Angul, Dhenkanal and Mayurbhanj.
Yellow Warning (0830 Hrs of June 1 upto 0830 Hrs of June 2):
