Freddy could possibly make landfall as a tropical cyclone at the end of the week.
IMD on Saturday predicted that the Deep Depression, which is the remnant of the cyclonic storm “Mandous”, now lies over north Tamil Nadu. The system is very likely to move nearly west-southwestwards and gradually weaken into a depression today.
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall spell over north Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka, south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema today.
The cyclonic circulation will gradually intensify into a low pressure area.
The storm surge of about 0.5 m height above the astronomical tide likely to inundate low-lying areas of north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the time of landfall.
Keeping the severity of the cyclone in view, a holiday for schools and colleges has been declared in several districts of Tamil Nadu.
The IMD on Thursday predicted light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activities in several parts of Odisha even though it ruled out any direct impact of cyclone Mandous.
Cyclone Mandous will maintain its peak intensity today, packing a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph.
The weather bureau has also shared the forecast track and intensity of the probable cyclonic storm.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that the system is likely to concentrate into a depression by this evening. As per the forecast, the system is likely to intensify further gradually into a cyclonic storm.
If the system takes the shape of a cyclonic storm, it will be known as Mandous as suggested by the United Arab Emirates. The name of the cyclone will be in accordance with the World Meteorological Department's guidelines for naming tropical cyclones. This would be the season’s second post-monsoon cyclone.
Even the state capital of Kolkata has started feeling the impact of the approaching cyclone with cloudy skies and light rainfall in certain pockets since Monday morning.
IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Thursday said that the low pressure will concentrate into a Depression over eastcentral and adjoining South east Bay of Bengal after moving west-northwestwards around October 22 and further intensify into a deep depression on October 23.
IMD on Tuesday informed that a cyclone is likely to form over Bay of Bengal under the influence of a low pressure system which is likely to develop around October 20.
With a cyclonic circulation having already formed over the south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood, people in Odisha, particularly those living in coastal areas are in fear and apprehension.
