A low pressure area (LOPAR) has formed over the east central Bay of Bengal on Saturday morning (May 22). It is very likely to concentrate into a depression by tomorrow (May 23). The cyclonic system is expected to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24, and further intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm in the subsequent 24 hours. The probable cyclone is likely to reach West Bengal and adjoining North Odisha and Bangladesh Coasts in the morning of May 26 and cross the coast around evening.
As Bhubaneswar is expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by strong wind under the influence of the cyclonic storm from May 25, more emphasis is likely to be given on cleaning the drainage systems in the city.
With a low pressure area forming over Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the system is very likely to develop into a very severe cyclonic storm in the coming days.
The structure of Cyclone Yaas is made so that its disastrous impact will be felt in the sea and then on landfall place. Eastern and southern part of Yaas packed with knocking downwind and intense clouds.
Around 10 teams, including five units, of NDRF’s 10th battalion at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, who were deployed in Gujarat, landed in Odisha today. Similarly, five units of the third battalion at Mundali are also ready to mitigate any kind of eventualities during the possible cyclone.
With the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD on Saturday confirming the formation of a low pressure over East-central Bay of Bengal, the Special Relief Commissioner of the State informed that the authorities of all government departments and various districts are executing their preparations on a war footing to tackle the possible cyclonic storm that may intensify from the low-pressure system by May 24.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today reviewed the preparedness as weather department has predicted a cyclonic storm to hit the coast between Odisha and West Bengal.
The IMD has predicted formation of a low pressure area over East Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Andaman sea around May 23. This is likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm and may touch/land over Odisha/West Bengal coast.
Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre HR Biswas said that the cyclonic system over south-east and adjoining Bay of Bengal may trigger a low-pressure area over east-central and north Andman sea.
In view of Cyclone Yaas, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has cancelled various trains originating/terminating from and at Bhubaneswar, Puri. The trains passing through ECoR in Howrah-Chennai Main Line have also been cancelled. A total of 74 trains will remain cancelled during cyclone period.
A cyclonic system over south-east and adjoining Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger a low pressure area over east-central and north Andman sea today, the regional weather department informed.
With Cyclone ‘Yaas’ looming on the horizon, Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena on Friday (May 21), stated that the state is well prepared. Jena stated that 5 NDRF teams who were sent to Gujarat for Cyclone Tauktae will return to Odisha for deployment. He also added that ODRAF, NDRF and Fire Services personnel are being dispatched to strategic locations in the districts most likely to be impacted.
"The public health challenges already posed by the Covid-19 pandemic may be compounded due to the direct impact of the cyclone in terms of waterborne, vector-borne and airborne diseases that may arise in the community or in the displaced population in camps and temporary shelter settings."
In the wake of Cyclone Yaas, the East Coast Railway on Friday cancelled several trains originating or terminating from Bhubaneswar and Puri.
As many as 17 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 20 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams have been put on standby to deal with any eventuality arising out of Cyclone Yaas, informed Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena on Friday.
