China on Saturday reported over 34,900 cases, mostly that of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, as officials went about imposing lockdowns, shutting people in their flats to cut the transmission chain.
The announcement came amid a declining number of coronavirus cases in the state.
A decrease of 596 cases has been recorded in the active covid caseload in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The active caseload stands at 20,821 cases accounting for 0.05 per cent of the country's total positive cases.
"There is a need for this kind of low-cost detection system," said researcher Lance Hubbard from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the US.
BF.7 (also known as BA.2.75.2) is a sub-lineage of the Covid Omicron variant BA.5.2.1.
The death toll climbed to 5,28,403 with 33 fatalities, which includes 19 deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.76 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was at 1.78 per cent.
Eligible populations are the persons who have completed 6 months from the date of administration of the 2nd dose.
