The deceased has been identified as Lachman Behera.
According to sources, Behera, who had quit the ruling-Biju Janta Dal (BJD) and joined Congress party a day before, was returning after casting his vote when an unidentified miscreant stabbed him to death.
Though the exact cause of Behera's murder is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that he was allegedly killed by BJD workers over political rivalry, sources added.
Even though BJD's reaction on the matter could not be obtained, commenting on the violence reported from several places today, DGP Rajendra Prasad Sharma said that the last phase of polls was largely peaceful. As far as poll violence and illegal activities were reported are concerned, police have taken action, he said.
"Investigations into some political murder cases have been intensified and police have detained the accused persons. Action will be taken as per the law," Sharma added.
