Road commuters had a tough time due to poor visibility this morning. The regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the fog situation will continue for the next three days. Hence, weathermen have advised commuters to take caution.
"Dense fog will be witnessed till 10 am in various parts of the State from January 15 to January 16. Besides, Phulbani will record a lowest temperature of 5 degree Celsius in the next 24 hours," said the regional Met centre.
On Friday, the mercury dropped below 10 degree Celsius at seven places across the State.

Several parts of Odisha shivered under biting cold as the mercury dipped to 3.5 degrees Celsius in Phulbani while Bhawanipatna recorded a minimum temperature of 7.5 degrees on Friday.
The mercury dropped by 2-3 degrees in coastal Odisha due to cold wind from north-east direction.
Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast that the cold wave conditions will prevail in the State till January 9.
"It is almost becoming difficult to step out of homes before 9 am due to fog and intense cold wave conditions that is continuing even in the first week of January, said Kishore, a resident of Jeypore.

As many as 11 places of the State witnessed temperatures dipping below 10 degree Celsius with Kandhamal being the most affected, sources from the Indian Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar stated.
On Monday, Phulbani, the district headquarters of Kandhamal, recorded the season’s lowest with 5.0 degree Celsius while Daringbadi followed with 6.0 degree Celsius.
Intense spell of cold waves have also been witnessed in Keonjhar, Koraput, Mayurbhanj and other parts of Western Odisha. While interior Odisha also recorded drop in temperatures as compared to coastal areas, temperature drop has led to snowfall in Koida area of Sundergarh district.
While minimum temperatures stayed below 15 degrees in most places across Odisha, mercury dropped to 7.2 degree Celsius in Keonjhar, 8.6 degree in Angul, 9.0 degree in Sonepur and 9.5 degree Celsius in Titlagarh.
Cold wave conditions have also hit normal life in twin cities Cuttack and Bhubaneswar which recorded 11.4 and 11.2 degree Celsius respectively on Monday.
While old aged, patients and homeless are a worried lot due to spell of biting cold, workers, office goers and school children are also facing difficulties to reach their destination. Vehicular movement is also being affected due to dense foggy weather.
Sources said, this is the first time mercury slumped below 10 degree Celsius in Odisha during winter this season.
Daringbadi, also known as Kashmir of Odisha recorded the lowest temperature of 7 degree Celsius while Phulbani, the headquarters town of Kandhamal shivered at 8 degree Celsius in the morning today.
Apart from Phulbani and Daringbadi, three other weather stations recorded temperatures below 10 degree Celsius. Mercury stood at 8 degree Celsius in Sonepur, 9.5 degree Celsius in Titlagarh and 8.6 degree Celsius in Angul.
The weather department has informed that the temperature will continue to dip for a few more days.
"Its severe cold out and bonfire is the only way out to stay warm. Driving vehicles has also become difficult with dense fog engulfing the town till 11 AM," said a resident of Phulbani, Abhimanyu Sahani.
"All collectors are requested to keep a close watch and take appropriate steps to deal with the cold wave situation," Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena said a letter to district collectors.
The SRCs action came following the IMD bulletin saying that cold wave and cold condition is very likely to prevail over districts of Sundergarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts during next 2-3 days from December 27th to December 29.
"Night temperature is very likely to fall gradually by 4 degree Celsius to 6 degree Celsius over the districts of Odisha during next 2-3 days," said HR Biswas, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.
The IMD forecast said that dense fog is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of north Odisha and Kandhamal, Puri, Khurda, Sonepur and Kalahandi on Friday and in the districts of coastal Odisha and Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Angul on Friday and Saturday.
The IMD also said light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm is likely to occur in several places of north interior Odisha and at a few places across the state during January 1 to January 3, 2020.
"The rainfall activity will be mainly due to interaction between western disturbance and lower level easterlies from December 31, 2019," said Biswas.
IMD sources said Sundergarh district recorded the highest maximum temperature of 27 degree Celsius and the lowest minimum temperature of 10.5 degree C during the last 24 hours.
Keeping in view the IMD forecast, the SRC also asked the district collectors to circulate necessary advisory to protect the human beings and live stocks from cold wave.
"People having no proper houses may be allowed to take shelter during night hours in schools and other public buildings," the SRC said adding that steps may be taken for proper management of homeless and needy visitors.
The police and transport department may be asked to take necessary steps for controlling plying of vehicles in fog affected areas, the SRC suggested to the district collectors.

Twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 10.2 and 11.3 degree Celsius, respectively.
Sudarsan Mishra, duty officer of Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar informed that 10 places in Odisha recorded minimum temperature below 10 degree Celsius mark yesterday.
Though there is no forecast of rainfall in the next five days, the minimum temperature will be below normal for the next two to three days.
“There is a possibility of rise in temperature after two to three days. Shallow to moderate fog will also prevail in some districts across Odisha,” said Mishra.

As per the latest weather bulletin, dense fog is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sonepur, Angul and Boudh tomorrow.
Shallow to moderate fog likely to occur at one or two places in the early morning over the districts of Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Kalahandi, Dhenkanal and Koraput tomorrow.

Notably, Odisha is in the grip of cold wave condition which has been prevailing for the past few weeks.
In the last 24 hours, district headquarters of Phulbani Odisha’s Kashmir valley, recorded the minimum temperature of 9.5 degree Celsius.
On Friday, as many as 15 stations recorded night temperature below 15 degree Celsius. Sonepur turned out to be the coldest place in the State as mercury dipped to 8 degrees, followed by Phulbani with 9 degrees, Daringbadi 9.5 degrees, Bhawanipatna 10.5 degrees, Angul 10.6 degrees, Talcher 11.7 degrees, Jharsuguda 12.1 degrees, Sundargarh 12.5 degrees, Keonjhar 12.6 degrees, Bolangir 12.8 degrees, Boudh 13.5, and Koraput-Hirakud-Sambalpur with 13.6 degrees.
Mercury came down to 14.8 and 16.9 degree Celsius in the case of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar respectively.

As per the latest data shared by India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar, Phulbani recorded lowest minimum temperature of 9.5 degree Celsius.
Apart from Phulbani, Daringbadi recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 11 degree Celsius, Angul (11.6), Koraput (12.2), Bhawanipatna (12.6), Keonjhar (13.2) and Bolangir recorded minimum temperature of 14.5 degree Celsius.
The Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded minimum night temperature of 16.5 and 17.8 degree Celsius, respectively.
The cold wave conditions have crippled the normal life particularly in the early hours of the day. Similarly, dense fog cover also compounded the miseries for people in different parts of the State on Friday.
The visibility in Chandbali was less than 50 mts while vehicular movement was also adversely hit due to a thick blanket of dense fog in Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

As per the latest forecast issued by IMD’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar, the minimum temperature (night temperature) in Odisha is expected to fall by 3 to 5 degree Celsius in the next 48 hours. However, there will be no large change thereafter in the next three days, the bulletin read.
At present, Odisha is reeling under intense cold wave condition which has been continuing for the past one week. Daringbadi recorded lowest minimum temperature of 12.5 degree Celsius on Thursday. Several other districts also witnessed a sharp drop in the night temperatures in the past 24 hours.
Jharsuguda district recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 13.4 degree Celsius, Sundergarh (15), Talcher (15.3), and Baripada recorded minimum temperature of 15.2 degree Celsius on Thursday.

The Twin City of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar witnessed minimum temperature of 15.8 and 17.6 degree Celsius, respectively.
IMD’s regional Centre in Bhubaneswar has also issued shallow to moderate fog alert for the districts of Kandhamal, Koraput, Rayagada,Kalahandi, Bolangir, Boudh, Malkangiri, Angul and Dhenkanal in the next 24 hours.
The Regional Meteorological office in Bhubaneswar attributed the prevailing cold conditions to the flow of northerly winds sweeping the State. The minimum temperature fell by three to five degree Celsius and the condition is likely to prevail in the next 48 hours.
As many as six places in the State recorded temperature below 12 degree Celsius on Friday. While Jharsuguda recorded the lowest of 8.2 degree Celsius, Phulbani recorded 9.5 degree Celsius. Angul recorded 10 degrees while it was 10.5 degree Celsius in Baripada. Keonjhar recorded 11.7 degree Celcius and Sundargarh experienced a dip at 12.0 degree Celcius.
The Twin City of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded 13.8 and 16.5 degrees respectively on Friday.
“The temperature will dip further as northerly winds continue flowing towards Odisha,” said an official at the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, high dense fog reduced visibility to almost zero in Boudh. Angul experienced dense fog while moderate fog was seen in Phulbani and Nayagarh.
