Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand was on Sunday elected deputy president of FIDE, the sport's world governing body, while incumbent president Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected for a second term.

India A and India C also notched up identical wins against Romania and Croatia respectively in other open section matches.

Ahead of the 44th Chess Olympiad, an artist from Coimbatore, Chennai has designed this 1.5 inch miniature chess board. Artist Mariappan created the chess board using silver. The 32 chess coins have been created using 2grams of gold within just 2hours of time. This year, the state of Tamil Nadu is hosting the prestigious Chess Olympiad at Mamallapuram near Chennai.

PM Modi on Sunday flagged off the first-ever torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad which is to be held in Mahabalipuram from July 28 to August 10.

India won a bronze medal at the Tromso Chess Olympiad in 2014. While in the two virtual Olympiads, India won gold jointly with Russia in 2020 and the women's team won bronze in 2021.

The players will their free day on August 4, 2022, as per schedule. The departures will be on August 10, 2022.

The contest is open to all Indian citizens, agencies and organisations within India.

Chennai has previously hosted the 2013 World Championship, where Magnus Carlsen was first crowned World Champion, defeating Anand.

On Friday, FIDE (the International Chess Federation) decided to move the Chess Olympiad and all other official competitions planned in Russia in the wake of the country's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

The Indian team comprises Anand, Gujrathi, P. Harikrishna, Nihal Sarin, R. Pragganandhaa, Koneru Humpy, D. Harika, Tania Sachdev, Bhakti Kulkarni, R. Vaishali and B. Savitha Shri, with Abhijit Kunte as the non-playing vice-captain.
