The students appearing for the Class 10 board exams are registered for it when in Class 9, and those appearing for Class 12 are registered when in Class 11. The board notified the changes in the fees last week and has asked the schools who had already begun the registration process and charged students as per the old fee structure, to now collect the difference in amount.
According to the revised norms, the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students will have to pay Rs 1,200 for five subjects, while earlier they were supposed to pay Rs 50 for the same, a hike of 24 times. The general category students who were paying Rs 750 earlier, will now pay Rs 1,500 for five subjects.
"The fees is applicable for both Class 10 and 12 examinations," a senior CBSE official said.
For appearing for an additional subject in Class 12 board examination, the SC and ST students who were earlier not supposed to pay any extra fee, will now have to pay Rs 300. General category students will also have to pay Rs 300 for an additional subject, instead of Rs 150 earlier.
"100 per cent visually impaired students are exempted from paying CBSE examination fees. The student, who fails to deposit the difference in CBSE examination fee before the last date, will not be registered and will not be allowed to appear in the 2019-20 examination," the official added.
The migration fees which was Rs 150 earlier, has also been increased to Rs 350.
The students enrolled in CBSE schools abroad will have to pay Rs 10,000 for five subjects for both Class 10 and 12. Earlier it was Rs 5000. For them, the fees for an additional subject in Class 12 has been fixed at Rs 2,000, as against Rs 1,000 earlier.
As per the latest change brought in by the CBSE, the board will conduct two separate examinations for Mathematics in Class 10 from the academic session 2020.
The first paper will be Basic Mathematics while the second paper will be Standard Mathematics. This will allow the students to choose one paper between the two as per their potential and abilities. For this, students will have to select their course preference while filling the registration form for the examination.
NOTE: Students who choose Basic Mathematics will not be allowed to take Mathematics in Class 11. However, if a student gets good marks in Basic Mathematics in Class 10 and subsequently wants to take Maths in Class 11, he/she will be allowed to do so under two conditions- first, the candidate will have to appear and pass the Maths compartmental exam 2020. Secondly, before appearing the compartmental examination, the candidate should have passed in Basic Mathematics and then only, s/he will be allowed to pursue Mathematics in Class 11.
Meanwhile, there are no changes in the syllabus of basic and standard mathematics papers. However, there will be some changes in the difficulty level of both the papers in which the Basic Maths will be comparatively easier than Standard Maths paper.
Therefore, the CBSE has advised the students to choose Standard Mathematics paper only when they are interested in the subject and want to pursue career in Mathematics or else they can choose Basic Maths paper.
This year for the first time, the CBSE has introduced two separate examinations for Mathematics- Basic and Standard in Class 10 board examination which is scheduled to be held in February, 2020. The Board has also given students an option to choose one of the two versions of exams.
In order to help the students and their parents, TimesNowNews.Com in its recent article, has pointed certain things listed by the CBSE teachers and experts if one chooses Basic Mathematics as an option.
The curriculum for Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic will remain the same. All the schools would continue to teach the same curriculum, like the General Mathematics. However, the level of question paper for the students who choose Mathematic Basic will be easier than the Mathematics Standard. That means, a student who chooses basic level exam for Mathematics and wish to discontinue Mathematics in senior secondary level will have to face a comparatively easier paper in the exam.
Though the CBSE has clarified most of the queries, there are certain concerns related to this. Teachers are in doubt that students who opt for Basic Mathematics may face problems if they wish to change the board during the admission of Class 11.
The CBSE is yet to release any official clarification in this regard. However, when the other boards were contacted regarding the validity of Basic Mathematics by some CBSE affiliated school, they also denied giving any clarification, reported TimesNowNew.Com.
On the other hand, the students who choose Basic Mathematics would be able to continue and take computers in Class 11 and 12. Students who take Basic Mathematics, if change their mind also have the option to appear Standard Mathematics examination with the compartment examinations conducted in the month of July but they should clear the Basic Mathematics examination scheduled in February – March.
Teachers in the meantime are advising students and their parents to carefully go through the FAQs regarding Basic Mathematics shared by CBSE before taking the decision of choosing Basic Mathematics or Standard mathematics. Schools are also taking the consent of the parents in writing regarding their decision to take Basic Mathematics over Standard Mathematics.
Therefore, it is advisable for the parents to go through the examination form carefully and check the details as getting them corrected in the later date may create problem. Similarly, in case a student wants to change his/er board in Class 11, his/er parents should contact the respective board in this regard and seek clarity on the validity of Basic Mathematics as a subject.
In order to provide a platform to students to demonstrate such learnings that encourage construction of knowledge by connecting new ideas to existing concepts as well as enriching one’s understanding from other’s experiences and perspectives, the CBSE organises Science Exhibition/ Fair at regional and national levels every year.
This year too, the CBSE has invited students (Class VI to XI) of its affiliated schools to prepare research based science projects that are original, innovative exhibit/model on the theme “Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with a Thrust on Water Conservation”.
The CBSE Science Exhibition/Fair for the academic session 2019-20 will be organized in different parts of the country at regional Level in the month of October – November 2019. The National Level Exhibition/Fair would be conducted after the completion at the Regional Levels and dates for the same will be notified later.
The theme of the Science Exhibition/Fair is “Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with a Thrust on Water Conservation” while the subthemes are- Sustainable Agricultural Practices, Cleanliness and Health, Resource Management, Industrial Development, Future Transport and Communication, Educational Games and Mathematical Modelling and others.
As per the notification released by the CBSE, a school team for an exhibit will be represented by either an individual student or two students and one mentor Science teacher. Students studying in classes VI to XI in the current academic session eligible to participate in the exhibition/fair.
A participating school can register for a maximum of two exhibits/ projects/ models/ teams. The names of the students and the mentor teacher, once registered online, will not be changed at any stage of the exhibition. The school team which participated at Regional Level will only be allowed to participated in National Level, added the notification.
Care should be taken that eco-friendly materials are used in the preparation of exhibits, the CBSE said.

"Have advised CBSE to conduct board exams only for 29 main subjects that are required for promotion and crucial for university admissions. Whenever the Board is in a position to hold CBSE board exams, it shall conduct for 29 subjects by giving adequate notice. For rest of the subjects, CBSE will not hold board exams and instructions for their marking, assessment will be issued soon," he said.
The CBSE board exams were postponed in view of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
The HRD ministry also directed the CBSE to promote all students of classes 1 to 8 to the next class. "In view of the current situation due to #COVID19, I have advised @cbseindia29 to promote ALL students studying in classes I-VIII to the next class or grade," Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said in a series of tweets.
Students of class 9 and 11 will be promoted on school-based assessments conducted so far, he said, adding those not promoted this time can appear in school based tests online or offline.
"Students studying in classes IX & XI will be promoted to next class/grade based on the school-based assessments including projects, periodic tests, term exams, etc. conducted so far. Students not promoted this time can appear in school-based tests, online or offline," Nishank tweeted.

On the other hand, CBSE officials informed that the board will not conduct pending class 10 and 12 examinations in foreign countries due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"There are several CBSE schools located in 25 countries. Each of these countries are also under lockdown or have decided to close down the schools for various and differential lengths of time. Under such circumstances, it is felt that the board will not be in a position to hold differential set of exams for each of these countries," CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi said.
"Also, in the present situation, it will be difficult to bring the answer books to India for evaluation purposes. Therefore, the Board has decided to not hold any more exams for the students of class 10 and 12 schools located outside India. The system of marking and assessment for the purpose of declaring results will be worked out by the Board shortly and informed to these schools," he added.
It is pertinent of mention here that the exams were postponed on March 18 following the coronavirus outbreak.
CBSE further informed after introducing two levels of mathematics papers for class 10 students, it will now offer 'Applied Mathematics' as an academic elective at the senior secondary level for those who do not want to take it up for higher studies or won't opt for engineering which require a broader understanding of the subject.
The elective subject aimed at developing an understanding of basic mathematical and statistical tools and their applications in the field of commerce and social science, will be offered as elective for class 11 students from 2020 academic session and ultimately for class 12 students from the year after.
Students who had taken up 'Basic Mathematics' in class 10 will be allowed to opt for 'Applied Mathematics' at senior secondary level.
"Mathematics is widely used in higher studies -- in the field of Economics, Commerce, Social Sciences and many others. It has been observed that the existing syllabus of mathematics aligns well with science subjects, but not so much with commerce or social science-based subjects in university education.
"Keeping this in mind, one more elective course in mathematics syllabus will be offered for senior secondary classes with an aim to provide students relevant experience in mathematics which can be used in the fields other than physical sciences," the CBSE said in an official notification.
According to CBSE officials, a course by this name was earlier designed as a skill subject.
"The academic course that has been designed now by the same name has several value additions to develop substantial mathematical skills and methods needed in other subject areas. Topics covered in two years shall aim to enable students use mathematical knowledge in the field of business, economics and social sciences. It aims to promote appreciation of mathematical power and simplicity for its countless applications in diverse field.

"It is expected that the new subject -- applied mathematics -- is taught by connecting concepts to the application in various fields, thereby enabling students to develop 21st-century competencies such as critical thinking, problem solving, logical reasoning and mathematical thinking," a senior board official said.
However, students who want to opt for mathematics in higher studies as an elective or want to take admission in mathematics (honours) course or engineering course will be required to take the existing subject 'Mathematics'.
"Applied Mathematics course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of mathematics that are required to be successful in different fields of their career. Therefore this course may be selected by students keeping this aspect in mind.
"Students, parents and schools may take a conscious choice in selection of this subject by taking into consideration the scope of this subject in getting admission to different courses at university level," the official said.
Board officials explained that the approach of the subject 'applied mathematics' will be practical in nature. Students are expected to learn through practical applications of mathematics in different disciplines, they said.
"The students who have passed 'Basic Mathematics' in class 10 will now be allowed to take up the new academic elective 'Applied Mathematics' at senior secondary level. Accordingly, the students who have passed 'Basic Mathematics' as well as 'Standard Mathematics' in Class X of CBSE board exam are eligible for this course.
