Amphotericin-B is used to treat Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, which damages the nose, eyes, sinuses, and sometimes even the brain.

Mucormycosis is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes that has been developing in Covid-19 patients.

Mucor is a fungus that is present everywhere around us and can cause mucormycosis or black fungus. Black fungus only causes disease in people with extremely poor immunity.

There was a 2.1-fold rise in mucormycosis cases during 2020 in India compared to 2019 and the research suggests that this increase is attributable to the pandemic.

A dedicated ward for treatment of Black Fungus (Mucormycosis) infection cases was opened at the Sri Ram Chandra Bhanja Medical College & Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack on Friday.

A steady rise in the infection cases of Black Fungus also known as Mucormycosis has evolved as a major headache for the State government at a time when the daily spike in the Covid cases is still above 8 thousand. The situation is even more alarming due to the absence of sufficient stock of the most important treatment against the disease, i.e. the administration of liposomal Amphotericin-B injection.

The Centre has so far provided, both through the free of cost category and through the direct state procurement category, more than 23 crore vaccine doses (23,11,68,480) to States/UTs.

A patient suspected to be infected with Black Fungus succumbed in Sambalpur district. The patient died at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR) in Sambalpur.

A man suspected to have been infected with black fungus died while undergoing treatment at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla in the district. 

29,250 vials of Amphotericin-Bwere allocated, based on the number of patients under treatment which is 11,717 across the country.

The Centre has allocated to states and Union Territories (UTs) 29,250 additional vials of Amphotericin-B, a key drug to treat raging mucormycosis cases in India for the 11,717 patients currently being treated at different hospitals across the country

"Black fungus is another family; this term got associated with mucormycosis due to the presence of black dots among the culture of white fungal colonies."

"This fungus is found in reptiles. I saw this disease for the first time. Amphotericin B injection is used to treat this disease. It takes a long time to heal. This patient's condition cannot be said to be very good, he is still undergoing treatment."

Officials have issued the advisory after swarms of locusts were spotted in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer city.

India has so far reported approximately cases of 8,848 mucormycosis or black fungus, one of the rapidly spreading infections observed in those recovering from Covid-19.
