Swathanthran is not at all a strange name, however, each time his two children or his wife when asked about his name, people are startled to know, why he was named like that.
"It was just the other day I went to collect medicines for my father at a government clinic. The person who gave me the medicine asked me how come such a name. And (after knowing the reason) the person said 'hats off' to his (Swathanthran's) parents who decided to name him like that," Swathanthran's daughter Sukanya who works in a Central government organisation told IANS.
Swathanthran said that his parents - Narayana Reddiar and Janaki Ammal, after their marriage in around 1922, migrated from Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu) to the state capital city suburb of Nedumangad, where he lives with his wife Ananda Lekshmi, who has to do most of the explaining on why such a name.
"All become very happy when they get to know that since he was born the day India got Independence, he was named like that," said a beaming Ananda Lekshmi.
"We are basically farmers and that was our principal vocation. Once after reaching here my father started a wholesale trading business. He also had a few cows. I was born on August 15, 1947, and my parents did not have to think much to give me a name, and that's how I came to be known as 'Swanthanthran'," said Swanthanthran, who is leading a happy and contented retired life.
When asked if it (the name) helped him in any manner, with a laugh he said, "though it did not get me any rewards, however, I get a lot of respect."
For almost four decades he worked with a leading textile firm in here in the state capital.
On Monday, it was a bonhomie when the entire family all dressed in a green T-shirt got together not just to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India's independence but also to celebrate Swanthanthran's birthday.
The celebration was marked with cake in presence of several party leaders, ministers and well wishers who thronged his residence (Naveen Niwas) in the morning with flower bouquet to wish him. Many were seen taking selfie with him.
Patnaik expressed his deep gratitude to all his well wishers and vowed to continue his service for people.

The Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), BJD's student's wing, has decided to celebrate its party chief’s birthday by organising blood donation camp at BJD headquarters.
Party leaders have also planned to hold similar camps at other places across the State, sources said.
Meanwhile, the State government has put up hoardings across the city praising Naveen as an abled administrator. "Katha nuhe, Kathina Parishrma (No speech, hard work only)" read the headline of the hoardings.
Naveen didn't celebrate his birthday last year to mourn sacrifices of martyrs who fought against terrorists. He had also requested his well-wishers not to organise any programme.
In 2015, some students had sustained injuries in explosion of gas-filled balloon when they were coming in a rally to wish the CM.
In 2014, Naveen had declared not to celebrate the nbirthday for cyclone Hudhud and in 2013 for cyclone Phailin. In 2011, the CM had also decided to stay away from any celebration, expressing solidarity with people who suffered in flood then.
Wishing him on his 71st birthday the Prime Minister tweeted- “Birthday wishes to Odisha CM Shri Naveen Patnaik. Praying for his long and healthy life. @Naveen_Odisha.”
Similarly, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee wished her Odisha counterpart through social media.
“Birthday greetings to CM of Odisha Naveen Patnaik ji” Mamata tweeted.
Union Petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan also wished Patnaik on Tweeter on his 71st birthday.
On Saturday, Patnaik had declared not to celebrate his birthday as a mark of respect to the martyr jawans who laid down their lives fighting against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Just a day earlier, the actress had taken to her Instagram handle and shared a handwritten note stating something "super exciting" was coming up, with a countdown. It left her fans curious.
After the countdown finished, Deepika announced the website's launch and captioned it: "Here's presenting my website - www.deepikapadukone.com. Love, Deepika"
The post also includes a QR code directing users to the website, which gives a landscape about Deepika's career.
The website features the landmarks and awards that Deepika has achieved, apart from information on Live Love Laugh, a foundation she has been supporting to spread mental health awareness.
It is Deepika's first birthday after her wedding to Ranveer, whom she married in Lake Como, Italy, in November.
As far as her projects are concerned, Deepika will turn producer with "Chhapaak", which will feature her as an acid attack survivor.
On her birthday, she received greetings on social media from celebrities like Madhuri Dixit Nene, Preity Zinta and Manish Malhotra. Here's what they had to say:

"Good wishes to all fellow citizens, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters in India and abroad," the President, who is in on four-day visit to Australia tweeted.
"We remember the noble teachings of the venerable Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and pray that there is harmony, brotherhood and peace all around," Modi said.
The risks may have not always reaped praises, especially with films like "Dilwale" and "Jab Harry Met Sejal", but that hasn't deterred the actor from trying something new.
Superstar Aamir Khan has vouched for Shah Rukh's "Zero", after watching its trailer at a special event.
"SRK, you have outdone yourself," Aamir tweeted, impressed by a glimpse into the Aanand L. Rai directorial which also stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.
The film's trailer will be officially launched on Friday afternoon. Trade analysts who have already had a sneak peek into it have said the movie, which is likely to have a "strong undercurrent of emotions", promises "hardcore commercial drama and melodrama at its best".
While "Zero" will release on December 21, according to filmmaker Rahul Dholakia, who directed Shah Rukh in the gritty "Raees", the actor's energy and appetite to experiment is still like that of a 23-year-old.
"At 53, he is hungry. Still very hungry. And he has so much to offer that I am not surprised as to why he is trying different roles, and I am really glad he is open to that.
"He can play intense scenes as easily as he could charm and romance. He has the biggest, widest and most convincing range than any other actor in the industry," Dholakia told IANS over phone.
Asked about the impact of the rise of actors like Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao and Vicky Kaushal, who are scoring big with offbeat films, Dholakia said: "I don't think Shah Rukh's work will be affected. If at all, he will reinvent himself to suit, match and excel at new scripts and narratives that are emerging and getting popular.
"For actors like Shah Rukh, it's going to be about picking different parts and right scripts. He is very smart and hardworking. He has got the passion and drive of a newcomer."
Shah Rukh, who entered the industry via the small screen route with "Fauji", went on to win the audience's heart with films like "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge", "Dil To Pagal Hai" and "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai". Not only in terms of love stories, Shah Rukh garnered a huge fan following for his villainous roles in movies like "Darr", "Baazigar" and "Anjaam".
In the past five years, the actor has featured in movies like "Chennai Express", "Happy New Year", "Dilwale", "Fan", "Dear Zindagi", "Raees" and "Jab Harry Met Sejal". While some scored success, some stories did not strike the right chord with the audience.
Shah Rukh had even reportedly refunded distributors of "Jab Harry Met Sejal" after it failed to generate the expected response.
Trade expert Vinod Mirani feels Shah Rukh should take a career break.
"Instead of doing same romantic roles again and again, Shah Rukh should do something different. Like Rishi Kapoor took a break in his career and then rediscovered himself, SRK should also do the same," Mirani said, adding that mediocre scripts are responsible for the actors' films which have not performed well.
He said: "It has been more than 25 years since SRK is a part of this industry. With each of his projects, his fans expect something new from him. He should do stories which are different and don characters which people could relate with."
Shah Rukh himself wants no mediocrity -- so suggested one of his latest tweets in which he wrote: "I am okay to die of excess... I welcome starving because of want... just don't let me succumb to an accident with mediocrity."
Actor Sonu Sood, who worked with the 'Bollywood Badshah' in "Happy New Year", finds Shah Rukh's process of "rediscovering" himself interesting.
"He always tries to explore himself, with the kind of body work he has. He has done everything. He is discovering new projects. That is the journey of a true actor... when you keep trying new things and try to rediscover yourself. He is doing that and he is a well-read man. I am sure whatever he will do, will be something he will always be proud of," Sonu told IANS.
"Best wishes to Rashtrapatiji. India has benefited greatly from his wisdom and perspectives on various subjects. He has connected wonderfully with every section of our society. I pray for his long and healthy life," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet.

Born on this day in 1945 in Uttar Pradesh, Kovind served as the Governor of Bihar before being elected as the President on July 25 last year.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee and the official twitter handle of the Congress party also greeted Kovind.
"May God bless you with long and healthy life and many more years of service to the Republic," Mukherjee said.
"Warm greetings to Kovindji on the occasion," the Congress tweeted.
"May God bless him with good health and a long life," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.
The Chief Ministers of Delhi and West Bengal, Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee, also greeted Kovind.
"Birthday greetings and best wishes for a long and healthy life to Lata Mangeshkar, who has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna. May her melodious voice continue to mesmerise millions across the world for years to come," the President tweeted.
Calling Mangeshkar as "Lata Didi", the Prime Minister also expressed his best wishes on her birthday.

https://twitter.com/AnushkaSharma/status/991191693184544768
I'm building an animal shelter just outside Mumbai - a home for those animals that are stranded, left to fend for themselves, have to brave harsh surroundings. A home where they will be cared for, loved, protected and nurtured," Anushka wrote in the note posted on Twitter.
"This has been my calling for years now and my dream is finally coming true. I will seek your time, support and advice to make this home a place that looks after fellow living beings with utmost care and compassion - all in due course of time. Until then, I seek your blessings and your prayers," she added.
Anushka pointed out how while humans "have a voice to speak up, we have fundamental rights, we can ask for justice, we have families, near and dear ones to love us and take care of us", and urged people to "think about the animals".
"Think about how they live, how they are treated, think about their rights, think if they are treated fairly? And what's worse, even if they aren't being treated well, they have no means of doing anything about it and that's where we have to come in as humans who stand up for all living beings.
"It is our responsibility. The whole purpose of being the strongest species is to look out for the welfare of all those, not so strong ones around us, so that we truly can give back to our great Mother Earth and live harmoniously."

"Happy Birthday dear @sachin_rt . You are and will always remain an inspiration . It's wonderful to see you contribute towards society with some really good initiatives even after your retirement. Wish you success always," wrote his longtime teammate VVS Laxman.
His opening partner Virender Sehwag wrote: "Many more happy returns of the day to a man who could stop time in India (literally) .Thank you for making the Cricket Bat such a great weapon, which later many like me could also use."
It was not a surprise that #HappyBirthdaySachin was trending on leading social media platform Twitter.
Suresh Raina and Lokesh Rahul too had emotional messages for Tendulkar, the only batsman to score 100 international centuries.
To the man who united a billion Indians and brought a smile to their faces everytime he walked out to bat. A dream that he turned into reality.
Sachin is an emotion.. Sachin is a phenomena!

In another video, Jeetendra and Shobha are seen seated with Ekta's friend and "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin" actress Mona Singh, and dancing to "Saamne yeh kaun aaya" from the 1972 film "Jawani Diwani".
"Killer moves sitting. Family, friends like family," Ekta tweeted of the moment from the party, which had several TV actors in attendance.
Mona also shared a glimpse of the party, and wished "Jeetu uncle" a happy birthday. "Happy birthday Jeetu uncle. May you always have that shining smile," she wrote.
Actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani took to Twitter to announce: "Nostalgic and excited! We complete 25 years at Pooja Films. Extremely Happy to announce the adaptation of our first film 'Coolie No. 1' with my favourite David uncle, my brother Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan! Cannot wait for this mad journey to begin!"
The original film, which starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in the lead, was directed by Varun's father and filmmaker David Dhawan.
David is returning to direct the new movie, which is produced by Vashu Bhagnani who also backed the 1995 film.
After "Judwaa 2", which released in 2017, "Coolie No.1" remake marks David and Varun's second collaboration.
The MLA observed his 79th birthday with the students on the school premises while the classes were underway. The programme was organised by local forums -Jayanti Committee and Sachetan Nagrik Manch.
While the incident drew flak from different corners, BJP has strongly criticised the Bhogarai MLA raising questions on how the programme was organised inside the school.
"It is unfortunate that a politician was allowed to celebrate his birthday inside a school. How could the Block Education Officer and the school principal allow such a programme on school premises?" said a local BJP worker, Dilip Kamila.
On the other hand, Block Education Officer of Bhogarai, Kalindi Saren said that he is unaware about the programme and no such permission was given to organise it inside the school.
"The school authorities should be blamed for the incident. We didn't give any permission for celebrating the birthday," said Saren.
No comments could be obtained from the Bhogarai MLA in connection with the matter.
Zaheer had turned 41 on Monday and Hardik wished the former pacer by tweeting: "Happy birthday Zak ... Hope you smash it out of the park like I did here."
Happy birthday Zak ... Hope you smash it out of the park like I did here ??❤️❤️ @ImZaheer pic.twitter.com/XghW5UHlBy
— hardik pandya (@hardikpandya7) October 7, 2019
The all-rounder tweeted with a video of him smashing Zaheer for a six in a domestic match. However, netizens found his post disrespectful and slammed the 25-year-old.
"Ahankaar tujhe le dobega mere bhai pandya...stay humble not foolish (Your arrogance will ruin you brother, stay humble and don't act like a fool)," a user replied to Hardik's tweet.
"Hope you start giving good performances outside of Talk shows and win a world cup for India like he did Hardik Pandya," another fan replied.
Another person also hit back at Hardik saying: "Says a mediocre 'all rounder' more (in)famous for his antics off the field than on it to a champion bowler who's taken 600 combined ODI/Test wickets!"
Pandya recently underwent surgery in London to treat his lower back issue which has ruled him out of cricket for an indefinite period.
He is one regional actor who has successfully broken all the boundaries of states and languages and has deeply penetrated the minds of Indians. That is why when it was his 34th birthday on January 8, more than 5 lakh fans of Yash from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh gathered in Bangalore to celebrate his birthday. Yash came to the event with his wife Radhika Pandit.
Yash Did Not Want To Celebrate His Birthday
It was the first time in two years that the actor celebrated his birthday. However, he was not very happy to celebrate it. According to inner sources, Yash decided not to celebrate his birthday last year when Ambareesh, his senior co-actor whom he loved and respected a lot died. However, his decision had so much impact on one of his fans that he came in front of the superstar’s residence and set himself on fire.
The fan was immediately rushed to the hospital but could not be saved. This incident made Yash very sad and he was somehow feeling responsible for the whole thing. That is why this year the KGF superstar let the fans celebrate his birthday the way they wanted and even reached the venue with his wife to make them happy.
The fans had erected a huge cut-out of Yash at the venue which could have easily toppled and killed anyone. So the actor asked his fans to remove them immediately. The cut-out was so huge that it took a chopper to bring it down.
