Bajrang Punia gave India its first gold medal in the sport of wrestling as he beat Canada's Lachlan McNeil in the men's 65kg freestyle wrestling final.
Bajrang as well as wrestler Deepak Punia will leave this weekend from India.
The 1994 born wrestler Bajrang had won a Bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a wide 8-0 margin. He is the only Indian wrestler who has won 3 medals at the World Wrestling Championships and is seen by many as a fitness icon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (Aug 16) met Indian athletes who had participated at the Olympics, where he congratulated everyone for their incredible performance at Tokyo.
Bajrang's bronze medal took India's tally in the Tokyo Olympics to six medals -- two silver and four bronze. India thus tied for its best medal haul in the Olympics at 2012 London when they won two silver and four bronze.
Punia will be up against Haji Aliyev from Azerbaijan in the semifinal.
