In a tragic mishap, an elderly person was killed after falling off a chariot during the Bahuda Yatra in Pattamundai of Kendrapara district.
The deceased has been identified as Nirakar Jena of Alabha village. He reportedly fell off the Patitapabana chariot during the Bahuda and died on the spot after coming under wheels of the chariot.
In another incident, a volunteer was left critically injured when a plank of wood fell on him during chariot pulling in Pallahara in Angul district. He was rushed to the Pallahara hospital following the mishap.
Meanwhile, three persons were injured following a group clash during chariot pulling in Banpur of Khurda district. One of the injured was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated, informed sources.
A platoon of police was deployed by the district administration to bring the situation under control and prevent any untoward incident. Senior police officials have reached the spot and are keeping a tight vigil on the situation, informed sources.
For the next three days, the chariots will be parked outside the Singhadwara for a set of rituals including Sunabesa and Adhara Pana before they are taken to the shrine on Niladri Bije.
While Lord Balabhadra’s chariot Taladhwaja and Devi Subhadra’s chariot Darpadalana arrived at the Singhadwara one after another, Lord Jagannath waited a short distance away from the temple where he was given customary welcome by Goddess Mahalaxmi and Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb. Later, He too reached the Singhadwara.
All the three chariots reached the Singhadwara, the Lion’s Gate in front of the Srimandir ahead of schedule.
Despite waterlogging and incessant rains, lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad turned up on the Badadanda to witness homecoming of the deities.
Earlier in the morning, the Sri Gundicha Temple wore a festive look as rituals of the deities kicked off smoothly with the Mailama, Tadapalagi, Rosa Homa, Abakash and Gopal Ballav rituals.
Pahandi rituals began two and a half hours ahead of schedule and Lord Sudarshan at first followed by Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and finally Lord Jagannath were taken out of the Gundicha temple to their respective chariots.
The chariot pulling kicked off after Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb offered Chherapahanra, a service conducted by the king on chariots.
Heavy deployment of forces was in place to prevent any untoward incident during the occasion.
Meanwhile, CM Naveen Patnaik in a statement congratulated servitors, police, SJTA officials and general public for conduct of a peaceful and hassle-free Rath Yatra.
This traditional dance is called the “Mahari Nrutya” or. “Devadasi Nrutya”. Samridhi also sang Bhajans for the Holy Trinity. Samridhi says that she also likes to draw paintings of Lord Jagannath. Samridhi has set her eyes to become the ‘Rashtrapati.
The festival began with a series of rituals performed by the servitors in the wee hours today. Due to the timely conduct of the rituals, the pahandi (procession) of the deities began and hour and half before schedule.
After the Daitapati servitors brought Lord Sudarshan and the three deities to the chariots, the Gajapati King Divyasingh Deb was brought from his royal palace in a palanquin to conduct ‘Chhera Panhara’ on the chariots of the Lords.
The pulling of the chariots began with the pulling of Taladhwaja chariot of Lord Balabhadra at 2.50 PM followed by the Darpadalana chariot of Devi Subhadra and the Nandighosa chariot of Lord Jagannath.
While the Taladhwaja and Darpadalana chariots reached the Simhadwara of Srimandir before evening, the Nandighosa chariot arrived late in the evening.
A multi-layer security net was thrown around the town with heavy deployment of forces to ensure the smooth celebration of the Bahuda Jatra and to prevent any untoward incident, a senior police official said.
The deities would be decorated with Sunabesha or golden attire, which traditionally attracts a large number of devotees, on the chariots tomorrow.
Talking about the arrangements made for the Sunabesha of the deities, chief administrator of Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Suresh Mohapatra said the barricades would made around the three chariots tonight. “We will make arrangements to leave more space within the barricaded are to allow smooth movement of the devotees to have the darshan of the deities. Besides, I have requested the Daitapati servitors not to block the deities on the chariots so that the devotees can have a clear darshan of the deities,” he added.
Director General of Police (DGP) KB Singh said all arrangements have been made for the smooth darshan of the deities. “We have made three-tier security arrangements to ensure smooth movement of the devotees inside the barricades in a queue. The way the Rath Jatra and Bahuda Jatra were conducted peacefully, the Sunabesha of the deities will also be held peacefully,” he asserted.
Laxmidhar Pujapanda, Public Relations Officer, SJTA, said efforts are on to start the Sunabesha rituals of the deities at the earliest possible. “It all depends on whether the servitors cooperate with the temple administration in conducting the rituals in time the way they did today during the Bahuda Yatra for which the chariots of the three deities could arrive at the Simhadwara in time,” he pointed out.
Senior Daitapati servitor Jagannath Dasmohapatra said lakhs of devotees would throng to Puri to have the Sunabesha darshan of the deities. “The importance of the Sunabesha darshan is that as per mythology, a devotee having the darshan of the deities in their golden attire will have no rebirth,” he noted.
The deities would finally re-enter the 12th century shrine and again be placed on the Ratna Simhasana following a ceremony called Neeladribije.
To ensure timely completion of the rituals of the deities, the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) today said the Sandhya darshan (also known as Navami darshan) of the deities at Adapa Mandap inside Sri Gundicha temple would be stopped after 7 PM.
Talking to OTV today, senior servitor and assistant secretary of Daitapati Nijog Binayak Dasmohapatra said keeping in mind the series of rituals of the deities for the Bahuda Jatra, the duration of Sandhya darshan of the deities has been curtailed.
“It has been decided that the there would be no Sandhya darshan of the deities after 7 PM. We are expediting the Sandhya Alati, Sandhya Dhupa, Badasimhara Besha, Badasimhara Bhoga, Pahuda Alati, Srimukha Khandua, Bahuta Kanta, Kusumi Lagi and Senapata Lagi rituals to ensure that the rituals of the deities for the Bahuda Jatra are completed in time. We are working in coordination with the Daitapati sevayats and all sevayats towards this end,” he added.
Dasmohapatra said the rituals of the deities for the Bahuja Jatra would be begin with Mangala Alati at 4 AM followed by Mailam at 4.15 AM, Tadapa Lagi and Rosha Homa at 4.30 AM, Abakasha at 5 AM, Surya Puja at 5.15 AM, Dwarapala Puja and Besha Sesha at 5.30 AM, Gopala Ballava and Sakala Dhupa (Khichudi Bhoga) between 5.30 AM and 6.30 AM, Senapata Lagi between 6.30 AM and 11.30 AM and Mangalarpana at 11.45 AM.
“The pahandi (procession) of the deities would be held between 12 PM and 2.30 PM while the Gajapati King Divyasingh Deb will perform Chhera Panhara on the three chariots at 3.30 PM. After the Chhera Panhara, the servitors will conduct the Charamala Phita (untying of ropes) from the three chariots and fix the wooden horses and charioteers (Sarathi). The pulling of chariots will begin at 4 PM.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the festival. Senior police officer and Additional DG Binayanand Jha and Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi today briefed the security personnel at the Sri Gundicha temple about the measures to be taken to cordon the three chariots.
“Besides the inner and outer cordon of the chariots, a four-layer security arrangement has been put in place in the entire Puri city. Special arrangements have been made for the cordon of the three chariots and crowd control. Besides, tight security is in place in the beach and along the Puri coast, while extra arrangements have been made for emergency security in case of any untoward incident,” RP Koche, IG, Central Range, told media persons here.

Asked whether the three chariots would be pulled to the Simhadwara of Shri Jagannath temple tomorrow, Koche said this will be possible only if the rituals of the deities are performed in time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
Preparations for the return journey of the deities have been completed. The festival will be conducted in strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines.
Servitors started the rituals as per tradition since last night. Rituals like Bahuda Kanta, Charabandha, Kusumilagi have been performed. Charamala has been tied to the three Chariots.
Pulling of chariots is scheduled to begin at 4 pm. The three chariots are kept ready in front of ‘Nakachana Dwara’ of Gundicha Temple.
On the other hand, the district administration has left no stone unturned to ensure hassle-free festival. The police also stepped up measures to enforce the restrictions imposed by the administration.
The district administration has imposed curfew which came into effect from 8 pm of July 19 (Monday). The restriction will remain in force till 8 PM of July 21 (Wednesday). The prohibitory orders have been clamped to restrict mass public congregation on the Bada Danda/ rooftop and balconies of buildings adjoining the road.
Police have also deployed teams to undertake random checking of persons on Bada Danda to nab those who violate curfew orders.
Measures have been taken to prevent entry of unwanted persons into the holy town. Only authorised persons including servitors, selected officials will be allowed to participate in the festival, Puri SP said.
He said the police have already initiated legal actions against certain persons who have been identified to have violated the curfew order on the Ratha Jatra day on July 12.
Meanwhile, the police have sealed all entry points to Puri town and only local residents are allowed to move after verification. All hotels, lodges and guesthouses on both sides of the Bada Danda have been shut after it was noticed that some people assembled on rooftops to witness the festival, an official said.
The district administration has also prepared a blue-print for Suna besha or golden attire (July 21) and Niladri Bije or return to the temple (July 23).
The deities are taken in the same chariots- Nandighosha, Taladhwaja and Darpadalana, in which they arrived, pulled by devotees back to the main temple-Srimandir. Odishi and Gotipua dancers perform to the tune of devotional music in front of the chariots, and martial artistes perform ‘banati’, a traditional martial art, in front of the deities. It is considered auspicious to get a glimpse of the deities on their chariots. Return journey of Lord Jagannath (Bahuda Jatra) follows the same protocol and schedule.
On the returning day from Gundicha temple the three deities are offered ‘Poda Pitha’ (a special sweet made of rice, coconut, lentils and jiggery) and after that they start their journey. After reaching closer to Srimandir, the chariot of Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are stationed at ‘Singha Dwara’ (Lion Gate) but Lord Jagannath’s Rath halts in front of the Gajapati King’s palace. On the other hand, Maa Laxmi (wife of Lord Jagannath) steals a glimpse at ‘Chahani Mandapa’ to enquire about the safe return of three deities from Gundicha temple. Lord Jagannath offers a garland to Goddess Laxmi as the souvenir of his love.

Meanwhile, the district administration has imposed restrictions in the pilgrim town for the smooth conduct of Bahuda Jatra keeping in view the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic situation.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 (CrPC) will be clamped in Puri from Monday 8 pm till 8 pm on July 21 to restrict movement of devotees on the Grand Road during Bahuda Jatra.
Similarly, all hotels, lodgings, dharamshalas and guest houses along the Bada Danda have been closed. No vehicular movement will be allowed in the entire Grand Road other than the authorised vehicles carrying essential services/medical services during the period.
No person shall be allowed to witness the festival from rooftops or balconies of buildings, hotels, dharamshalas, lodges and guest houses located along the Grand Road.
Sources in the Puri district administration said that no one will be allowed to witness the return journey of the Holy Trinity from rooftops on July 20.
“Like Ratha Jatra, prohibitory orders under Section 144 (CrPC) will be clamped in Puri from 8 pm on Monday in view of the Bahuda Jatra. No one will be allowed to witness the Jatra from rooftops,” said Puri Collector Samarth Verma.
Meanwhile, preparations are in full swing for the ‘Return Car Festival’ from Gundicha temple to Srimandir on the ninth day of Ratha Jatra.
The ‘Dakshina Moda’ ritual, or the southward turn, of the three chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings stationed outside Gundicha Temple will be held today on the sixth day of the annual sojourn. This will mark the beginning of the preparations for the Bahuda Yatra.
During the ritual, the chariots stationed on the Saradhabali in front of Gundicha Temple, facing north since Ratha Jatra, will be turned towards Srimandir on the south with the help of servitors and security personnel. The chariots will then be kept near ‘Nakachana Dwara’, the eastern gate of Gundicha Temple.
After ‘Agyaan Maala’ or garland of consent of the Lords arrived from the Gundicha temple, the chariot of Goddess Subhadra, Darpadalan, will be first turned towards south. It will be followed by Lord Balabhadra’s Taladhwaja and Jagannath’s Nandighosh.
Meanwhile, the chariot repair committee has fixed the minor cracks that have developed on three chariots-Taladhwaja, Nandighosh and Darpadalana.
“The minor cracks on the wheel and axle of the chariots have been fixed with small iron clamps and those are fully ready to roll,” said a member of the committee.
As per legends, Lord Jagannath left for his aunt's house along with his brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra while leaving behind his wife Goddess Laxmi at Srimandir.
Such an act of Lord Jagannath irks the Goddess. To vent out her anger, Devi Laxmi visits the Gundicha temple in a decorated palanquin on the Hera Panchami day to enquire about Lords.
In order to please her, Lord Jagannath promises her to return to the Srimandir soon. As a mark of his promise, Maha Laxmi will be given an Agyan Mala (a garland of consent) from Pati Mohapatra servitors as Lord's representative.
Goddess Laxmi will be taken to her husband through ‘Jay Vijay Dwara’.
Later, Goddess Laxmi breaks a part of Nandighosh ratha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath, to express her anger.
The Hera Panchami ritual marks the process for Bahuda Jatra as the three chariots are turned southward called Dakhina Moda ritual.
Meanwhile, The district administration has imposed restrictions on public movement in and around the Gundicha temple. The restrictions have been enforced from Bholanath Vidyapeeth to Khaki Mutt Nuasahi to Gundicha temple.
No devotees or local residents are allowed to move in the restricted zones. No vehicle will also ply in the areas without permission. The restriction will remain in force till 8 pm of July 19.
On the other hand, State Information and Public Relations department has made elaborate arrangements to ensure live telecast of Bahuda Jatra and other rituals like Suna Besha, Adhara Pana and Niladri Bije so that people can watch the proceedings at home.
