The Assam Cabinet has given the nod to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935 in a bid to end child marriage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Sarma told reporters here that although the Assam government was originally going to introduce a Bill outlawing polygamy, it is now also considering harmonising the matter with the UCC after Uttarakhand brought a legislation on the same subject.

The accident took place at Balijan near Dergaon this morning when the bus with 45 people on board collided with the goods vehicle, Golaghat Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh told PTI.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were present during the peace pact signing.

A goods train carrying coal derailed in Assam's Kamrup district on Wednesday, said railway authorities. The incident took place near Boko when 20 wagons of the coal-laden train jumped the tracks at Singra near Boko. However there were no injuries to anyone in the accident. The derailed wagons were at the centre of the train which had a total of 60 wagons, said a rail official.

Along with the semi-high speed train, Modi also dedicated New Bongaigaon--Dudhnoi--Mendipather and Guwahati--Chaparmukh electrified sections to the nation. He also inaugurated the new DEMU/MEMU (workshop for trains) shed at Lumding.

Addressing a press meet here, he said: "The situation is improving in Manipur. I have talked with the district administration in Cachar. People who have taken shelters in camps there will return to their homes in the next couple of days."
