The horrifying memories of deaths and destruction is still fresh in the mind of Kalpana Behera. The middle-aged woman from Madhupur village under Astarang block in Puri district saw her entire family including her children, husband and in-laws wiped out by the devastating tropical cyclone in the blink of an eye.

On October 29 in 1999, a cyclone ripped through Odisha. Such was its intensity & extent of damage, it was termed the Super Cyclone. The disaster left around 10,000 people dead and over 3 lakh houses were destroyed. Over two lakh animals were killed and 25 lakh people were marooned.
