Former England spinner Monty Panesar has praised Team India’s decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, describing the 26-year-old as a “natural leader” who excels when given responsibility.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that he personally informed Rohit Sharma about the management’s decision to step down from the ODI captaincy. Gill has been named as his successor, with his first assignment being the three-match ODI series against Australia, beginning October 19.
The announcement surprised many and sparked divided opinions among fans and former cricketers. Panesar, however, welcomed the move, suggesting that leadership could bring out the best in Gill and potentially see him deliver his finest ODI series to date.
“I think it’s a fantastic decision. Gill has been performing really well. Making him captain while Rohit Sharma is still in the team allows him to guide and support Rohit during the series. It’s a very positive move. We’ve seen his natural leadership skills in England,” said Panesar in a recent interaction.
“When you give him responsibility, Shubman Gill tends to shine. I expect we’ll see the best of him in this ODI series. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s also considered for the T20I captaincy because he thrives when entrusted with responsibility,” Panesar added.
Gill, meanwhile, is focused on the long-term, with his sights set on the 2027 World Cup. India are expected to play around 20 ODIs leading up to the tournament, and Gill aims to guide the team to the trophy.
