Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly defended Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, stating that the legendary pair owes no justification to critics questioning their place in the team. He emphasised that the duo’s dedication and hunger to perform should instead inspire young cricketers aiming for long-lasting careers in the game.

His comments came after Kohli and Rohit delivered dominant performances in India’s recent 2-1 ODI series triumph over South Africa. Kohli emerged as the Player of the Series, amassing 302 runs with two centuries and a fifty, while Rohit had earlier earned the same honour against Australia with a hundred and a half-century.

Despite their Test retirements, discussions about their future in the 2027 ODI World Cup have intensified, with no clear direction from the team management. However, both players have shown strong intent by signing up for the Vijay Hazare Trophy—Kohli for Delhi and Rohit for Mumbai—demonstrating they are far from done.

Ashwin praised their discipline and drive, calling the notion that they still need to prove themselves “laughable.” He stressed that long careers naturally feature highs and lows, but what stands out is how Rohit and Kohli continue to work hard and make sacrifices for Indian cricket.

He added that their attitude conveys a powerful message to the next generation-commitment, fitness, and sacrifice are essential for longevity at the highest level. “The game is always bigger than any individual,” Ashwin concluded.
