T20 World Cup 2026: Mohammed Siraj suffers injury, doubtful for Super 8 clash
India, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, has assembled in Ahmedabad for a crucial Super 8 showdown against South Africa in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The February 22 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium carries added intrigue, as it revisits the high-octane final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. With both teams eyeing a semi-final berth, the contest could once again deliver edge-of-the-seat drama.
India’s campaign so far has not been without setbacks. Illness has disrupted team combinations, with Jasprit Bumrah and Abhishek Sharma each missing a match, while Washington Sundar also battled health issues. Even before the tournament began, an injury to Harshit Rana forced selectors to draft in experienced pacer Mohammed Siraj at the last moment.

Siraj made an immediate impact in India’s tournament opener against the USA, claiming three wickets. However, fresh concerns have surfaced after he reportedly hurt his left knee during a training session, following a powerful shot from Hardik Pandya. Observers at the Ahmedabad nets noted that Siraj appeared uncomfortable and cut short his practice stint-a development that could trouble the Indian camp given his importance to the pace attack.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel has underlined the value of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, describing him as a key wicket-taking option. At the same time, Morkel stressed that collective effort from the entire bowling unit will be essential in a tightly contested Super 8 group.
